Pedagogy

Learning how to play C Major scale in 8th notes on the piano.

1). Verbal-Linguistic intelligence:

Reciting ta-co / ta-co / ta-co / ta-co representing eight note patterns to get the pulse
within their system. Reciting konakoll syllables for older students like ta-ka / ta-ka / ta-ka / ta-ka

2). Logical-mathematical
Breaking down what an 8th note is against a quarter note. Reciting 1 &/ 2 & / 3 & / 4 &
instead of verbal syllables.

3). Spatial-visual
Telling that the C Major scale is all white keys from to C to C.

4). Bodily-kinesthetic
Clapping 8th notes against a quarter note pulse. Scale exercises to better execute
thumb break in order to play scale more fluidly.

5). Musical
Hearing the C Major scale as entire melody instead of separate notes.

6). Intrapersonal
Asking the student what a Major scale sounds like. If student is capable of playing scale
with relative ease, then having student play D Dorian scale (same notes with a different starting
point), and asking the student how D Dorian sounds different from C Major even though they’re
the same notes.
