their skills to reduce the impact, lessen the damages and decrease the mortality rate for the
possible occurrences of calamities. In addition, this study improves the family’s quality of life,
and increases their awareness about the importance of Disaster Preparedness because Dumaguete
City was affected with a natural disaster with nonstop raining and caused floods in some parts of
the Visayas and Mindanao areas, leading to suspensions in both public and private schools. The
impacts are felt not only by human suffering and property damage but also from loss of
approach wherein the status of disaster preparedness among families was assessed and
respondents of this study was consisted of any responsible member of the family 18 years old
and above who have experienced and have not experienced natural disasters and lives in
Dumaguete City at the time of the study. It was conducted in 24 barangays of Dumaguete City
Canal, Motong, Piapi, Pulantubig, Tabuc-tubig, Taclobo, Talay. In these barangays some were
affected by natural disasters and others were not. The instrument that was used in the data
collection was a self-made questionnaire developed by the researchers and has two parts which
were the demographic profile that includes age, gender, marital status, educational attainment
and family income while the second part contained information pertaining the status of disaster
Majority of the respondents that participated in this study were females and mostly with
an educational of a high school level. The researcher used Spearman Rho as a statistical tool
during analysis. It indicates that there is a significant relationship in family member trained in
first aid. The members trained in first aid have significant relationship since all the respondents
have participated in the program through school or employment. In terms of income, the
respondents implied that they are unable to gather the materials needed for disaster preparedness
because they prefer to use it for daily consumption instead of natural disasters. In degree of
damage to the status of family disaster preparedness it shows significant relationship to disaster
plan, list of hotline number in case of catastrophic event and evacuation plan.
The researchers found out that the status of disaster preparedness of families in
Dumaguete City was not prepared because majority of the respondents has answered “No” in the
Part II questionnaire which contained questions about disaster preparedness, and the greatest
number comes from Barangay Bantayan, Banilad, Calindagan, Piapi and Talay In the analysis of
data, the data showed that there is significant relationship in family member trained in first aid,
list of hotline numbers in case of catastrophic event and transportation to the level of education,
in level of family income only trained member in first aid has significant relationship which
indicates that in terms of income the respondents are they don’t prepare budget for the materials
needed for disaster preparedness because they prefer to use it for daily consumption instead
allocating budget for any catastrophic event. In degree of damage to the status of family disaster
preparedness it showed significant relationship to disaster plan, list of hotline number in case of
catastrophic event and evacuation plan. It was interpreted that the level of education and degree
of damage of the respondents has significant relationship to their status of family disaster
preparedness while the level of income has only one significant to the study.
The disaster preparedness among families in Dumaguete City revealed that there are
several Barangays that are not prepared. In regards, to the significant relationships between
family disaster preparedness and level of education, family income, and degree of damage
resulted as a negative impact in our study. However, there was little positive significance in our
study which was the degree of damage in regards to first aid training within the family.
Therefore, we conclude that the families among Dumaguete City are not prepared for any natural
management in our community and involve all the respective Barangay’s in Dumaguete City.
