CONCRETE MASONRY SPECIFICATIONS

7.1 General

7.1.1 Scope

Concrete masonry construction shall include the furnishing of all labor, material, and equipment, and
performing all operations necessary to execute all concrete masonry construction, as specified.

Contractor shall make all preparations and do all work necessary to receive and adjoin other work.

Contractor shall give the work his personal supervision and shall keep a competent foreman on the
job at all times when he is not there himself.

Contractor shall specify the position of all dowels required for masonry on other construction,
including foundations.

Contractor shall arrange for the necessary storage space for construction materials at the job site.

Contractor shall call for all inspections required in the course of his work by Owner and/or Building
Department.

Whenever the words "Standard Specifications" are used herein, they shall mean the Standard
Specifications for Public Works Construction as published by Building News, Inc., Los Angeles,
California, latest edition. Measurement and Payment items specified in the Standard Specifications
shall not apply.

7.1.2 Submittals

Prior to beginning work, Contractor shall furnish to Owner the following:

a. Color sample of Concrete Masonry Units. Unless specified otherwise, color of the
Concrete Masonry Units shall be Desert Sand.

7.2 Materials

All materials shall conform to the following standards:

7.2.1 Concrete Masonry Units

Masonry units shall conform to Section 202-2.1.1 of the Standard Specifications.

7.2.2 Mortar

Mortar shall conform to Section 202-2.1.2 of the Standard Specifications, unless specified otherwise.
Mortar shall be Class E with ¼-part lime putty.

7.2.3 Grout

Grout shall conform to Section 202-2.1.2 of the Standard Specifications.

7.2.4 Lime Putty

Lime putty shall be made from approved quicklime or hydrated lime and shall weigh not less than
83 pounds per cubic foot.

Hydrated lime shall conform to ASTM C207, latest.

Quicklime shall conform to ASTM C51, latest. Quicklime shall be slaked and then screened
through a 16-mesh sieve. After slaking, screening, and before using, it shall be stored and protected
for not less than 10 days.

7.2.5 Reinforcing Steel

Reinforcing steel shall conform to Section 201-2 of the Standard Specifications. Unless specified
otherwise reinforcing steel shall be Grade 60.

7.3 Masonry Construction

7.3.1 General

Concrete block masonry construction shall conform to Section 303-4 of the Standard Specifications.

Blocks shall be cut accurately to fit all plumbing ducts, openings, electrical work, and all voids
slushed full.

7.3.2 Joints

Mortar joints shall conform to Section 303-4.1.2 of the Standard Specifications.

Where walls are to receive plaster, the joints should be struck flush.

Where certain joints are to be concealed under paint, these joints shall be filled flush and then sacked
to produce a dense surface without sheen.

Vertical head joints shall be buttered well for a thickness equal to the face shell of the block and
these joints shall be shoved tightly so that the mortar bonds well to both blocks. Joints shall be
solidly filled from the face of the block to the depth of the face shell.

7.3.3 Reinforcing

Reinforcing bars shall conform to Section 303-4.1.3 of the Standard Specifications.

Vertical bars shall be held in position at top and bottom and at intervals not exceeding 192 diameters
of the reinforcement.

When a foundation dowel does not line up with vertical core to be reinforced, it shall not be bent
over, but shall be grouted into a core in direct vertical alignment, even though it is in an adjacent cell
to the vertical wall reinforcing.

7.3.4 Grouting

Reinforcing steel shall be in place and inspected before grouting starts.

A cleanout hole shall be provided at the bottom of each cell to be poured when the height of grout
pour exceeds 4 feet. All debris and projecting mortar shall be cleaned out before pouring grout.

Vertical cells to be filled shall have vertical alignment to maintain a continuous unobstructed cell
area not less than 2 inches by 3 inches.

Cells containing reinforcement shall be solidly filled with grout in lifts not to exceed 4 feet and
pours shall be stopped 1½ inches below the top of a course to form a key at pour joints.

Grouting of beams over openings shall be done in a continuous operation.

The tops of unfilled cell columns under a horizontal masonry beam shall be covered with metal lath
or special units shall be used to confine the grout fill to the beam section.

All bolts, anchors, and similar wall inserts shall be solidly grouted in place.

7.3.5 Protection & Curing

Concrete masonry protection and cleaning shall conform to Section 303-4.1.4 of the Standard
Specifications.

Masonry walls are to be left bare or unpainted and extreme care shall be taken to prevent mortar
splotches.

No construction supports shall be attached to the wall except where specifically permitted by Owner.

All forms shall be made tight (special attention is necessary for bottom form of block bond beams)
and concrete and grout spilled on the wall shall be washed off before it can set up.

Wall shall have its surface dampened for three days with a light fog spray during a curing period. It
shall not be saturated with water for curing or any other purposes.

7.3.6 Cleaning

At the conclusion of work, Contractor shall clean down all masonry walls, remove his scaffolding
and equipment used in the work, clean up all debris, refuse, and surplus material, and remove them
from the premises.
