GRADING POLICY:
Assignment Percentage of Grade
Summative 57%
Formative 23%
Final exam 20%

SUPPLIES: Students will need a 3 ring binder, pens/pencils, notebook paper and markers/colored
pencils.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to be prepared for class each day, turn work in on time,
and be respectful in class. Students are expected to follow all lab safety rules.

ATTENDANCE/MAKEUP WORK: It is the student’s responsibility to obtain any missed work and to turn
it back in to the teacher in a timely manner. Arrangements to make up any missed tests/quizzes must be
made with the teacher upon returning to class. All missing work must be completed and turned in before
the 9 weeks grading period is complete, it will NOT be collected after that time period.

TUTORING: The times I am available for tutoring will be posted on the board each week. Please let Ms.
Styron know ahead of time to make arrangements if you would like additional help mastering Zoology.

LAB EXPECTATIONS: All labs will be conducted in a manner consistent with the lab safety rules that are
distributed and signed at the beginning of the semester. Failure to follow proper lab safety rules may
result in a zero and dismissal from the lab.

EATING IN CLASS: Eating and drinking need to be kept to a minimum. No food/drink may be
consumed during a lab. If trash is left in the room, then eating and drinking will be prohibited.

HALL PASSES AND TARDIES: Students should make every effort to go to lockers, get water, etc.
between classes. Students will be sent to get a tardy pass if they are not in the classroom when the bell
rings. The “15 - minute” rule will be followed.

USE OF PHONE AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Using a phone or other device for anything but specified
classwork or other approved reason may result in disciplinary action. Phones/tablets/etc. are not
allowed during any type of assessment including quizzes and tests. Cell phones may be taken up if
student is using the phone for unapproved reasons or during an assessment of any kind.

TEST RETAKE POLICY: If a student earns a 69% or less on a unit test, then the student may retake that
unit test to earn a maximum of a 70% on the assessment. If the student chooses to retake the test, then
the test must be completed within one week after the original graded assessment as been given back to
the student.
BONUS BUCKS: Extra credit is typically awarded in the form of “bonus bucks.” They may be earned in
various ways throughout the semester. Students are responsible for keep up with their bonus bucks.
Bonus bucks may be added to any assignment except the final exam. The conversion rate of bonus bucks
to bonus points is as followed:
1 bonus buck = 1 bonus point on a formative assignment
2 bonus bucks = 1 bonus point on a summative assignment

DISSECTIONS: Several dissections will occur in this course. Proper lab protocol will be followed or the
student will be dismissed from the lab and will be given a zero for a lab grade. All food and drink must be
put away during a dissection and must not be consumed. Closed toed shoes must be worn during a
dissection. Lab goggles must be worn during a dissection.

COURSE OUTLINE: Below is a general outline of the units of Zoology and the order they will be taught in.

Weeks 1- 3: Introduction to Zoology and Evolution


Weeks 4 – 5: Sponges, Jellies, and Rotifers
Weeks 6 – 7: Worms
Week 8 - 9: Mollusks and Sea Stars
Weeks 10 -11: Arthropods
Weeks 12 -13: Early Chordates
Weeks 14 - 18: Vertebrates
Week 18: Final Exams
