“SINE DOMENICO NON POSSUMUS”
(WE CANNOT DO WITHOUT SUNDAY)
About 304 Emperor Diocletian amongst
other things forbade Christians on pain of
death from gathering on Sundays to
celebrate the Holy Eucharist. One Sunday in
Abitene (Tunisia), 49 Christians gathered
to celebrate the Holy Eucharist in a home
and were arrested and taken to the
Proconsul Anulius. He asked them why
they had disobeyed the orders of the
Emperor. One of them replied “Sine
Domenico, non possumus”, meaning “We
cannot do without Sunday”.
Sunday is the weekly Easter in which we
receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist (Holy
Communion) as nourishment and strength
for our earthly pilgrimage just as Elijah,
strengthened by bread from heaven,
journeyed for forty days and nights to the
mountain of God at Horeb.
The Holy Eucharist is the most Venerable
Sacrament in which Christ the Lord himself
is contained, offered and received and by
which the church continually lives and
grows … Christ’s faithful are to hold it with
the highest honour and should receive it
with great devotion and reverence (cf. Code
of Canon Law Nos:897/8).
The Holy Eucharist having been
understood thus, it is worthwhile
improving upon our reception of Holy
Communion.
1. Confession and Holy Communion:
Confession heals, Holy Communion
nourishes. A worthy reception of the
Sacrament of Confession cleanses,
purifies and sanctifies the soul for a
worthy reception of Holy Communion.
2. First, Last and Only Holy Communion:
If we could think of each Holy
Communion as our first, last and only
communion, how much more fervent
would our reception be.
3. Offertory: Offer at least one intention in
each Holy Mass. The more we offer, the
more we receive, “Ask and it will be
given to you, seek and you shall find,
knock and the door will be opened to
you. (Mt 7:7) Do come early before
Mass and offer yourself and your
intentions to God.
4. Receive Holy Communion with Our
Lady: Ask Our Lady for purity of heart
so you can receive her son with burning
love in Holy Communion.
5. Thanksgiving: the Eucharist is a meal.
After a meal, it is just normal to thank
the host. After Holy Communion, spend
some time in silence to thank, praise
and adore him.
6. Reverence: Give a simple bow before
you receive Him and also answer
“Amen” aloud which means “I believe”
for Holy Mass is a prayer in dialogue. St
Cyril of Jerusalem admonishes us as
follows: “Make a throne for the King of
Kings by placing your right hand under
your left hand”.
Jesus is the bread of life without whom we
are nothing and can do nothing. Receive
him with reverence and with faith. Know
what you receive and become what you
receive. “Sine Domenico, non possumus”

Compostela for an 8 days walking
pilgrimage at the end of May 2019.
