About 50% hydrocarbon reservoirs around the world are consist of carbonate rocks. During
exploration phase, experts face a lot of difficulties due to heterogenity of pore and minerals.
Complexity in pore type causes scattering pattern in relationship between P-wave velocity and
porosity and makes accoustic impedance (AI) can not be used as a porosity indicator. The pore
type in the carbonate rock which related to the aspect ratio makes this study becomes important.
Aspect ratio is affected by the accuracy of mineral parameters determination. Although there
are X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) data that give information about percentage of mineral content,
their elastic modulus values of the study area are not available.
Study area is belong to Ngimbang Formation, Northside East Java Basin. In this study,
determination of elastic modulus of mineral is accomplished by combining reference value and
used Schon’s approach as a validator. Aspect ratio estimation is done by modifying Kumar and
Han’s method (2005) which determine bounds using Hashin Shtrikman upper – lower bound
for stiff and soft pore, and Wyllie time average equation for reference pore. Then use Kuster-
Toksoz with single aspect ratio to approach these bound, so that aspect ratio of each pore type
will be obtained. In this study area, this approach is only good for estimating the aspect ratio
of stiff and reference pore, therefore the soft pore should be calculated directly from the
measured data.
The results of Vp and Vs modelling in this study, which have a minimum error and the best
correlation, can be used to analyze the effect of pore shape and determine the prospect zone.
Based on modelling of elastic and petrophysical properties, present about 52 percents of
prospect zone, which Sw less than 0.75, are dominated by stiff pore which represent as vuggy
porosity and mouldic. Each prospect zone does not have a vertical relationship so they need a
further analysis to know their horizontal relationship.
