Any clarification? Schema)

B. Motivation

Before moving onto the rules in direct and

indirect speech, let’s have a quick question
drill.

I will ask a student a question. After they

answer, I will ask another student what was
said. For example:

T: _______, how did you get to class today?

S1: I came by a car.

T: Sorry, I didn’t get that, ______ what did

______ say?

S2: He said he came by a car.

Are we clear class? Yes ma’am.

Are you ready? Yes ma’am.

1. _______, what did you have for lunch?

(a student answers)

Sorry, I couldn’t hear it, ________ what did

he/she say?
(a student answers)

Thank you.

2. How about you _______, at what time did

you arrive in school?
(a student answers)

Again, I’m sorry but ________ what did she

say?

(a student answers)
Oh!

3. _______, how’s your seatmate in class? (a student answers)

Pardon, _______ what did ______ say?

(a student answers)
Oh! Okay.

4. _______, do you like chocolates?

(a student answers)
Sorry, I didn’t get that, _________ what did
she say?
(a student answers)

5. What about you _______, what kind of

chocolate do you like?

(a student answers)

I’m sorry but _______ what did he say?

(a student answers)

Oh! Thank you.

Very good class, it seems like you know how
to report a speech using reporting verbs.

C. Lesson Proper

After knowing the difference between a direct

and indirect speech, it is better to know the
rules.

I have here examples of a reported speech.

Look at the first example:

Mr. Florendo says, “The computer has all the

answers to all our questions.”

Mr. Florendo says that the computer has all

the answers to all our questions.

In this example, what do we call the

highlighted word?

Right. A conjunction, but what about the type A conjunction ma’am.

of sentence used in the quoted part? Is it a
declarative or an interrogative sentence?

And why do you think so?

A declarative sentence ma’am/

the highlighted word, what do you think is the Because that sentence makes a statement.
first rule?

When the quoted part is declarative, it is

clause.”

Let’s have another example for that,

He says, “I am playing football.”

Can someone please change it into an indirect

speech using the first rule?

Very good. H says that he is playing football.

Let’s try another,

Sandy says, “I need more money.”

Do you think this is a declarative sentence?

Can you please change it into indirect speech? Yes ma’am.

Very good! Again, everyone, what is our first Sandy says that she need more money.
rule?

When the quoted part is declarative, it is

Now, let’s have the second rule. Take a look Yes ma’am.
at this example:

The student asked, “Can it solve mathematical

problems?”

The student asked if the computer could solve

mathematical problems.

See this example? If in the first rule we focus

on declarative sentence, in the second we will
be focusing on what type of sentence?

think so?
Yes ma’am, because it asks questions and

more rules.

If you are asked with this question, what

would be your answer?

So that means this question is?

Either “yes” or “no” ma’am.

Answerable by yes or no.

Now look at the highlighted word. From this
example, what do you think as our second
rule?
When the quoted part is interrogative, or
when it is answerable by “yes” or “no” it is
transformed into and “of clause” or a whether

of “if clause” and “whether clause.”

Let’s try this example,

James asks, “is the computer a thinking

machine?”

Kindly change it into an indirect speech using

“if clause” and “whether clause.”
1. James asks if the computer is a thinking
machine.
Very good! Why do you think we need to add
“or not” at the end of the sentence if we use a 2. James asks whether the computer is a
“whether clause”? thinking machine or not.

Correct. In written English, we usually add

“or not” at the end of the sentence if we use a
“whether clause.” Because “whether’ is use for deciding or
taking an option.
Understand that class?

If that’s what we use when the interrogative

sentence is answerable by “yes” or “no”, what
about the WH-questions? Yes ma’am.
Class, what are those WH- questions?

Very good let’s have this example: Questions starting from “what”, “when”,
Jerome asks, “What are your plans?” “where”, “why”, and ”how”.

Jerome asks what my plans are.

What have you notice with the subject and the

verb in the quoted part?

Right. Now, from this example, what do you

think is the second rule for interrogative
sentence? The places of the subject and the verb
changed.

Very good. You must first identify the subject

and the verb used, then switch the places. If the quoted part is any of the WH-questions,
it is transformed by switching the places of
Let’s try this example, the subject and the verb.
Mother asked me, “What are you doing
there?”

Who is the subject in the interrogative

sentence?

And the verb is?

Now, can anyone change it according to the “You.”

rule?
Linking verb “are”
Very good. Let’s try another.

He asks, “How is your sister?” Mother asked me what I was doing there.

rule?

Again, can anyone tell me the first rule by

using the example?
Yes ma’am.

What about the second rule?

(Student answers)

Very good! Now I think you are all ready for

an activity. (student answers)

E. Application

First, I will group you into four and each

group should form their chairs into circle. We
will be having a quiz bee, but in this quiz bee
we have only two levels. In the first level, I
will show you direct speeches with a rewritten
form in indirect speech and you will just wrte
correct/wrong on your paper. For the next
level, I will show only direct speeches and
you have to rewrite it into the correct indirect
speech.

Each level has 5 items, for level 1, every right

answers will be given 2 points, and for level
2, every correct answers will be given 5
points.

Also, for every item, the writer in your group

will change but you can help your groupmates
in answering. Are we clear?

Now, go with your groupmates.

Yes ma’am.
