Curriculum
Math
Students will be using Ready Math this year. Diagnostic tests will be given
through this program so each student will receive instruction at their
individual level. The Indiana Academic Standards 2014 state that fourth
grade students need to master multiplication and division facts 1-10. This
is one area where you can easily help your child by drilling 3-4 times a
week using flashcards or the web-based program, XTRAMATH (see
below), math workshop, iReady lessons, and IXL (see below) will also be
utilized during the math block.

Language Arts and Reading

Language Arts includes reading, grammar, word study, and writing. We
will be using Ready Reading passages in class, Journeys passages,
Newsela, articles on GoFormative, and selections from ReadWorks which
will be used as a supplement to our learning. Our grammar will be
anchored by mentor sentences this year. We will be working through
grammatical topics based on mentor sentences. This year in word study,
we will be focusing mainly on building vocabulary, with prefixes, suffixes,
Greek and Latin roots, and basic spelling patterns. We will also be using
novels in book clubs this year to meet the needs of the diverse learners in
our classroom. During book clubs, we will practice the critical standards
that are needed for your child to be successful in fourth grade.

Science and Social Studies

Fourth grade’s focus in social studies is Indiana History, so we will be
doing many activities and lessons that focus on Indiana’s unique history.
Since fourth graders take Science ILEARN, we will focus on covering all of
these standards before we take the statewide assessment. We will be
using a write-in textbook for social studies. For science, we will use our
digital techbook from Discovery Education. We are very excited to use
these resources!

Additional Information

Monday Folders
Yellow take-home folders will be sent home on Mondays. In the folder you
will find graded assignments completed the week before on one side of the
folder. Please review the papers with your child and sign the form to
indicate that you have seen all the papers. On the other side of the folder
is important news or papers. The school or I send these papers home.
The folder needs to be returned by Wednesday.

Chromebooks
We are excited to once again have an opportunity to use Chromebooks in
our classroom this year. The Chromebook is a learning tool meant to
enhance our 4th grade curriculum. Classroom procedures will be created
and appropriate usage will be discussed and strictly enforced.
Chromebooks are so much more than a laptop; they are intended to
encourage self-exploration in our topics of study and aid in our
individualized instruction.

Birthdays
I would love to help celebrate your child’s birthday with the class. If you
plan on sending in a treat, please email me first, so I can set aside a time
in our day to celebrate this special day in your child’s life.

Homework
I generally do not assign a lot of homework during the week. However,
when I do, I would like it to be finished by the student, and checked by an
adult. I will not accept homework the same day I assign it. I do this to
encourage students to take their work home so a parent or guardian can
check it and go over it with them. I have found that this helps parents
know what is going on at school, as well as gives the student the
opportunity to show what they know. The most common homework
assignments that come home will be studying math facts, vocabulary
words, or work on projects. As always, a minimum of 20 minutes of
reading will be required each evening as part of a student’s homework.

Our plastic green folder is our homework folder this year! This
should come home every day with the student planner.

Student Planner
Students will be expected to use the student planner daily to document
any homework, tests, etc. Please check these every night. It will tell you
what homework needs to be completed for the day. They will have
adequate time in class to fill this out.

No Name Papers
No name papers can be a real problem. Please encourage students to
check their homework at home to make sure they are writing their name
and classroom number on all papers. The numbers help with organizing
our paperwork.

IXL Math and Language Arts Program

This year, students will be using an internet-based program called IXL.
They will have access to this program at school on their Chromebooks, or
at home by going online to www.ixl.com. Students are encouraged to
access this Math and ELA program at home if they have Internet access.
Students will use this program to practice, improve, and hone their skills.

XTRAMATH
We have the opportunity to utilize the math facts practice site this year,
which is a great way for your student to gain mastery over their math facts.
This website can be accessed from any mobile device, and I encourage
your student to get on this program as much as possible to practice their
facts. We will be using this program in class as well.

Reading Counts
Students are encouraged to read 20 minutes every evening. They make
take quizzes in class over the books they read to get points.

Book Orders
Throughout the year we will have the opportunity to order books from
Scholastic. Online ordering is available to those who are interested. Our
classroom code for online orders is JRNDM. If your student is interested in
higher-level books besides the one that are listed in the flyer, you can
check out the website that lists all books available from Scholastic and
order them that way using our classroom code.
Payment for orders may be done online or by check made payable to
Scholastic.

End of the Day

Please make sure that you send a note with your child, email or call the
office if there is a change in arrangements for dismissal. Leaving
voicemail messages or emails after lunchtime can be risky, as I don’t
always get to these until after school.

Genius Hour
I plan on implementing Genius Hour this year to foster creativity and a love
of independent learning on my students’ behalf this school year. Genius
Hour will consist of students exploring areas in which they have a passion,
interest, or desire to know more about. I am looking forward to seeing how
this time will help grow my students’ creativity and problem solving skills.

Skyward
The school’s Skykward computer program can be used to check grades,
lunch accounts, attendance, and discipline. I will also be using this
program to send class emails, weekly newsletters, and other classroom
correspondence.

Behavior Management
In lieu of a clip chart, this year our behavior management system will
revolve around students getting PBIS points to use towards the school and
classroom stores. I will be signing planners to alert you to any behavior
issues that happen throughout the day. Please check your child’s planner
frequently.

Communication
Let’s keep the lines of communication open. If you have a question or
concern, please contact me as soon as possible. Email is probably the
fastest way to get ahold of me.

important reminders and information about our classroom directly on your
phone from me.
