INTRODUCTION
NOTE ABOUT THE GUIDE

Software Guide provides full and detailed information on "РМ1405 Software" software
(further – software) interface structure, describes all the program functions and software-
hardware communication.
The Software Guide familiarizes users with technical specifications and functions of the
software.

GETTING STARTED

Carefully study this Software Guide before start working with the РМ1405 software and
РМ1405 instrument. It is recommended to avoid wrong actions and to enhance software
operational reliability.

Upon reading retain this Software Guide for future references.

SOFTWARE OVERVIEW
"РМ1405 Software" software (further – software) developed by the Polimaster company,
enables operational control over radiation situation and output on the PC display of the data
read in the real time mode by detector of the connected instrument.

Software is installed on the personal computer (further – PC) and intended for use with the
Polimaster-manufactured instruments of the PM1405 (further – instrument).
Attention! Using the software with any other instruments can lead to unpredictable results.
The instrument is connected to a PC by means of an USB cable (mini USB-USB cable type).
The instrument and PC communicate by means of USB interface.

User must have at least initial experience in working with PC under


Windows family system to operate "РМ1405 Software".

SOFTWARE APPLICATION FIELD

The software is an integral part of the instrument. Graphically simple, convenient and
intuitive user interface of the "РМ1405 Software" is designed for the wide range of
specialists as well as for the customers, without expertise and pretraining, for:

1. Providing personal safety while working with ionizing radiation sources when
carrying out researches;
2. Providing personal safety of personnel by means of constant dose and dose rate
control, and instant alarm if there is personal radiation hazard;
3. Early warning of possible radiation contamination or terrorist attack.

SOFTWARE ENABLES:

1. Reading out events information (further – instrument history) from the instrument’s
non-volatile memory;
2. Conducting on-line real time measurement and displaying the results in digital mode;
3. Read/record operation settings of the connected instrument:
• DE and DER threshold values;
• History saving/recording interval;
• Measurement units;
• Enable/disable different alarm types.

SOFTWARE IS INTENDED FOR:

• Instrument-PC USB interfacing;


• Reading out events information (further – instrument history) from the instrument’s non-
volatile memory and saving it to PC (history export);
• Conducting on-line real time measurement and displaying the results in digital mode;
• Displaying of the β and α flux density measurement;
• Control and alarm on the DER thresholds exceeding;
• Control and alarm on the DE thresholds exceeding;
• Read/record operation settings of the connected instrument:
1. DER and DE thresholds values;
2. History saving/recording interval;
3. Measurement units;
4. Reset of the accumulated DE;
5. Enable/disable different alarm types.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Hardware and software requirements for proper "РМ1405 Software" operation:


1. IBM PC – compatible PC, Pentium III processor or higher;
2. 1 GВ free HDD space;
3. CD-ROM drive (for installation);
4. Compatible operating systems:
• Microsoft Windows Vista;
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional;
• Microsoft Windows 7.
5. USB – cable.

SOFTWARE INSTALLATION

Stop all active Windows applications before software installation.

To install the software it is necessary to carry out following procedure.

1. Insert the CD with the software installation package (included in the delivery set) in the
CD drive of your computer. Then using any file manager open the CD and run the file
setup.exe, located in the root directory.

2. After the file is running the Setup Wizard window will open.

Click the Next button to run the setup of the РМ1703M-GN Software.
In the new window Setup wizard will ask you to select a different folder to install the
software, or agree with the proposed folder. Default folder is C:\Program
Files\Polimaster\РМ1405.

Click the Next button to continue installing the of the РМ1405 Software.
In the new window choose the Next button to confirm the Installation.
It will start the installation process of the РМ1405 software.

After finishing the installation the system will begin searching for the pre-installed drivers
required for the program and instrument operation. In case the auto installation failed, on the
task bar will appear the following minimized window:

In that case the user should install the drivers in the manual mode. Maximize the window
and run the driver installation by clicking the Install button. After successful driver
installation will appear the following message “Installation completed successfully”.

Click the Close button to finish installation of the PM1405 software.

If you need to restart the PC, the screen displays a dialog box informing that to save the
configuration changes you have to restart the PC. The user can restart the computer
immediately (click the Yes button) or later (click the No button).

The "РМ1405 Software" is successfully installed.

WORKING WITH PROGRAM
Start the program/exit the program. Instrument-PC connection.

Further are described the procedures of connecting the instrument to the PC, connecting the
instrument to the software, start the software, exit the program and disconnecting of the
instrument.
During installation "РМ1405 Software" creates all necessary icons and shortcuts in
Window menu or on the desktop.
To launch the software after the installation:

- choose the Start menu line ;

- choose the Main menu line Start > Programs > Polimaster > 1405;

- or click a quick-start icon on the desktop.

As a result main program window will appear. Without the instrument connected the main
program window remains inactive (Fig. 2). Connect the РМ1405 instrument to PC by the
USB cable (mini USB-USB cable type);

Software starts to read the instrument characteristics, and the status bar with the “Reading
settings” message will appear at the bottom of the window (Fig. 3).
Program will establish connection with the instrument and display the serial number and
software version of the instrument on the top of the main program window.

After parameters reading the main program window becomes active (Fig. 4).
For proper program exit select one of the following ways: Select Device menu of the main
program window and click Exit command or use the standard Close button .
Disconnect the USB cable from the PC.

MAIN PROGRAM WINDOW
Simple graphic interface of the main program window represents a set of commands and
tools for PC user to interact with the connected instrument and work with measurement
results.

MAIN PROGRAM WINDOW STRUCTURE

Main program window consists of:


1. Menu of the main program window (Device, Help).
2. Field for displaying of the device serial number;

3. History button on the right of the serial number;
4. Battery charge indication bar under the History button;
5. Main program window Tool Bar. The toolbar is located under the battery charge
indication bar. Toolbar buttons correspond to the five parameters of the instrument
settings: Device status, Indication, Sound and Light, Thresholds, History settings,
Actions and Menu configuration.
6. Refresh and Apply buttons are located under the Tool bar.

Detailed description of all the commands and functions of the main program window and
toolbar is given further in the Guide.

MAIN PROGRAM WINDOW MENU

Menu Device commands:

• Refresh device settings command allows to view, update


and change instrument settings;
• History command allows to view instrument history;
• Device status displays the instrument real time operation;
• Clear History command allows to clear the history of the
instrument;
• Reset Dose command allows to reset the accumulated dose
value;
• Exit command allows closing and quitting the program.

Menu Help commands:

• Content (User Guide);


• Language – change of the program interface language;
• About - information on Software version and the EULA.

TOOL BAR
By selecting options from the toolbar you can change various settings of the program and of
the instrument. To save the changes made to the instrument settings you need to click the
Apply button at the bottom right of the main window. To save the changes made to the
software, you need to click the Refresh button in the bottom left of the main window.

Some of the toolbar buttons can duplicate basic commands of the main program window.

1. Device status tab

Device status tab can be opened from the Device menu of the Main program window,
Device status line, or from the corresponding tab on the Tool bar.

The Device status tab of the toolbar contains following items:
- Display imitating the instrument display and showing all the instrument readings in real
time;
- Measurement mode switching buttons in the lower left corner of the tab;
- Reset statistics button in the right corner of the tab;
- Reset dose button in the right corner of the tab.

Reset dose function is repeated in the main program window menu, as well as in the Actions
tab of the Toolbar.
Reset statistics function is repeated in the Actions tab of the Toolbar.

Descriptions of these features will be described in the Program/Instrument Settings Item.

2. Indication tab

Indication tab contains only one line – Display in Sievert. This check box when selected by
the user shows that measurements are made in Sievert, when not – in Roentgen.

3. Sound and Light tab

The Sound and Light tab of the toolbar contains following items:

− Sound Alarm enabled - switches on/off the instrument sound alarm;


− Search sound alarm enabled - switches on/off the instrument sound alarm in the search
mode;
− Light Alarm enabled - switches on/off the instrument light alarm;

4. Thresholds tab

The Thresholds tab of the toolbar contains following items:

- Attention Gamma Threshold - first alarm threshold value in the gamma measurement
mode;
- Danger Gamma Threshold - second alarm threshold value in the gamma measurement
mode;
- Attention Beta Threshold - first alarm threshold value in the beta measurement mode;
- Danger Beta Threshold - second alarm threshold value in the beta measurement mode;
- Accumulation Dose Threshold — accumulated dose alarm threshold value;
- Search Threshold - alarm threshold value in the search measurement mode.

5. History settings tab

The History settings tab of the toolbar contains following item:

− History Recording Interval - value of time intervals in which the current count rate
values are recorded in the instrument memory (hh:mm);

6. Actions tab

The Actions settings tab of the toolbar contains following item:

- Synchronize time – if this check box is selected, the time synchronization between
instrument and PC after the battery replacement is carried out;
- Clear history – this item allows clearing the instrument history;
- Reset statistics – this item enables resetting of gamma-background measurement data
buffer accumulated by the instrument and measurement will be started anew.
- Reset dose – if this check box is selected, the dose equivalent accumulated by the
instrument, as well as dose accumulation time reset is carried out.

7. Menu Configuration tab

The Configuration tab allows selecting necessary menu items to be displayed in the
instrument.

SOFTWARE/INSTRUMENT SETTINGS
Do all required software/instrument settings before starting software operation.

In this section we will examine different configurations of instrument and program settings,

as well as more detailed describe some of the menu items and toolbar functions.

Interface language
This software allows switching between the Russian and English languages. Default
software interface language is English.

To switch to another language it is necessary to select the Language item of the Help menu
and change the language.

Changes will take effect only after restarting the software.

Thresholds Setting
Software enables continuous monitoring over two thresholds within the whole DER
indication range during gamma radiation measurement, over two thresholds during beta
radiation measurement, two thresholds within the whole DE indication range, as well as one
threshold in the search mode.
Instrument will indicate an alarm (red LED blinking and sound alarm) when any set threshold
is exceeded.

Thresholds can be set with the help of the “Thresholds” tab of the toolbar. Using the
adjustment buttons one can choose the needed value of the threshold and press the
Apply button in the main program window to save the settings changes and then confirm
the action by clicking “Yes” in the dialog box.

The changed value will be highlighted in bold. After pressing the Apply button
configuration reading is carried out and changed threshold value will be saved.

Attention!
Set DER “Danger” value must be higher than DER “Attention” value.
Otherwise the DER “Danger” value will be reset during the process of
settings recording into the instrument.

Reset Statistics
User has the possibility to reset statistics using the Reset Statistics item of the Action tab of
the Program tool bar or Reset Statistics button of the Device status tab.

Statistics reset enables resetting of gamma-background measurement data buffer
accumulated by the instrument. The instrument uses these data for averaging. Resetting is
required when:
• doing successive measurements at slowly changing gamma-background;
• gamma-background has changed a little.
Otherwise the statistics reset is done automatically.

Increasing statistical error value indicates the statistics reset.


After the statistic reset the averaging of measured values will be started anew.

Dose reset

User has the possibility to reset accumulated dose and dose accumulation time using the
Reset Dose item of the Action tab of the Program tool bar, Reset Dose button of the
Device status tab, or use the menu Device line of the same name, and then confirm the
action by clicking “Yes” in the dialog box.

After confirming the intention to reset the accumulated DE, program will start to reset the

accumulated value of the equivalent dose and the accumulation time.
Value of the accumulated equivalent dose (DE) and the accumulation time are read from the
instrument and are displayed on the screen of the Device Status tab in the measurement
mode.

Measurement units

The program allows to select the measurement units. This function is necessary to
synchronize the measurement units set in the instrument with the units displayed on the
screen of the Device Status tab.
Using the Indication tab you can choose between R and Sv, selecting or clearing the check
box "Display in Sievert", and then clicking the Apply button.

Switching of the units dimension is provided by the program automatically.

HISTORY MODE

When the instrument is working in the autonomous mode (the instrument is not connected to
PC) it records all the operation history into its non-volatile memory. When the instrument is
connected to the PC and software, all its operation data will be read by the program and
displayed in the History mode window. The process is being continued all the time the
instrument is connected to the PC. So user can get a complete picture of the radiation
environment.

To enter the History mode: use one of the following ways:


- press History button in the Main program window;
− choose correspondent line of the Device menu;
− use the key combination Ctrl + H.
Following window will appear:

At the top of the window there are three buttons for choosing the file extension.

Below there are measurement data represented in tabular style. The first column shows the
date and time of measurement in chronological order, the second - the type of event, the
third – DER value, the fourth - the accumulated dose, the fifth – statistical error value.

The history events will not be written by the instrument with the low
battery!

History events

Instrument history consists of the following events:

• Gamma measurement, dose measurement;


• DER threshold exceeding “Attention”;
• DER threshold exceeding “Danger”;
• DER overload;
• DE threshold;
• DE reset;
• Background saving;
• Switching on;
• Switching off;
• Search Beta;
• Search Beta threshold exceeding;
• Beta measurement;
• Search Beta threshold exceeding “Attention”;
• Search Beta threshold exceeding “Danger”;
• Alpha measurement.

Software does not use any of the history filters, except one possibility to change the events
chronology - the first or the last event in the first line, which is produced by pressing the
Time column heading.

History records setting

In the History tab of the toolbar (item History Recording Interval), using the adjustment
buttons one can choose the value of time intervals in which the current count rate
values are recorded in the instrument memory. Minimum value – 1 min, recommended value
– 60 min.
After selecting the necessary functions you need to press the Apply button in the main
program window to save the settings changes to the instrument and then confirm your action
by clicking “Yes” in the dialog box.

History export

History export buttons are located at the top of the window and are used for
choosing the file extension.

When you select one of the file types (.rtf, .pdf, .txt), the standard Windows dialog box “Save
As” appears and allows you to save the history to a file of the selected type.
It is necessary to name the file and to save it in the specified folder, after that it can be
opened using any program for the spreadsheets viewing.

History reset

To reset the instrument history you can choose the item “Clear History” of the Device menu
or the Action tab item of the same name, and then confirm the action by clicking “Yes” in the
dialog box.

INSTRUMENT OPERATION
MEASUREMENT MODE

Measurement mode is the main instrument operation mode. It is displayed at software start
by default. The mode enables software to display following measurement data coming from
the instrument:
- measured dose equivalent rate of photon radiation;
- measured dose equivalent of photon radiation;
- measured α radiation flux density;
- measured β radiation flux density;

To enter the measurement mode it is necessary to choose the Device Status of the main
program window.

Opened tab screen displays real-time measurement, measurement units, statistical


measurement error (in percent), the accumulated dose and the time of its accumulation.

Measurement modes

To switch to other measurement mode it is necessary to choose the mode buttons in the right
lower corner of the Device status bar.

By default instrument displays the photon radiation dose equivalent rate measurement mode.
When the instrument is in the DER measurement mode, the Device status tab screen
indicates continuously measured DER values in "μSv/h", "mSv/h" and statistical error of the
measured dose rate in percentage.

Alpha and Beta measurements


If the alpha or beta measurement is chosen, instrument enters the α- or β flux density
measurement mode, and the screen displays the following image as long as the necessary
actions to carry out the measurement will be done. All the measurements steps will be
displayed on the program screen.

Alpha measurement

Display indicates the count rate value, determined by the joint α- β- γ-radiation during the α-
particles flux density measurement.

On the display could be read the results of the α-flux density measurement in the min-1/cm2.

Beta measurement

Display indicates the count rate value, determined by the joint β- γ-radiation during the β-
particles flux density measurement.

On the display could be read the results of the β -flux density measurement in the min-1/cm2.

The software is not designed to carry out direct measurements, rather to display processes
performed by the instrument. For detailed instructions on carrying out the measurements
consult relevant chapters and sections of the Instrument Operation Manual.

MENU CONFIGURATION

In case of need to hide some of the instrument functions to prevent their use, there is a
Configuration menu tab. It gives the possibility to choose necessary instrument functions
with the help of software tools, and other functions hide and make inaccessible.
