Q1. When did the rules that govern wars come into existence?

ANS- It is generally considered that the first war criminal convicted for his atrocities was Peter von
hagenbach , a germanic knight beheaded in 1474 after bieing tried and convicted first international
criminal tribunal. In 1863 U.S. prez A. Lincoln signed the Lieber Code dealing with the conduct of army
during war . In 1865, Cap. Henry Wirz of the Confederate army was executed for the code & violation of
the laws & customs of war .

Currently, wars round the world are governed by the rules set by the famous Geneva Convention. The
Geneva Convention is an umbrella term used for 4 treaties. The final treaty was ratified in 1949 in the
aftermath of the WW2. The first convention was held in 1864 & its signatories agreed to give human
treatment to the wounded & sick in the armed forces irrespective of the sides they represented. In the
1906 Convention, shipwrecked members of armed forces were also included. The 3rd Convention held in
1929 was about the treatment of prisoners of wars & the 1949 Convention laid the foundation of the
etics for protection of civilians during war. The formation of UN after WW2 led to the adaption of all
these convetions in 1949, & hence , the Geneva Convention typically refers to 4th treaty .

Q2. Why do paper tear easily?

ANS- paper may look smooth & solid but it is not .it is made up of many tiny fibres &pushed together .If
you pull on the paper , the fibres easily come apart &the paper tears.

Q3. The tail of kangaroo is almost its ‘fifth leg’. But how?

ANS- kangaroo are well known for their rapid movements, hopping & jumping effortlessly. Due to their
odd body shape they cannot walk in the conventional manner like other mammals. They move
pentapedally by making the use of their muscular tail as an ‘extra leg’ when they walk. First they plant
their front legs & then their tail on the ground & push forward with their before the hind legs come into
play. The tail propels & powers their motion.

Q4. Why do our cheeks blush in response to certain emotions?

ANS. Blushing is the reddening of the skin which is a universal human response to the social emotions
like shyness, embarrassment or anger. It occurs when the tiniest blood vessels, the capillaries in our
face, suddenly get wider. Actually, a strong emotional trigger stimulates the nervous system to widen
the blood vessels in the face, letting more blood to flow through them which gives your cheeks a rosy
appearance. It is often noticeable on the face b/c there are more capillaries below the skin.
Q5. Why does our skin blister after a burn or injury?

ANS. A blister is a small fluid (which is called serum or plasma) filled pouch present within the upper
layers of the skin. B/c of a burn or an injury, few of the nearby cells, tissues and blood vessels get
destroyed due top which their intracellular fluid leaks out & rushes to the site of injury & gets collected
within the epidermis & cushions up the tissues underneath to protect them from further damage,
allowing the affected area to heal.
