Programme summary: The Master of Arts in Social Theory includes four subdisciplines:
sociology, political science, philosophy, and applied ethics. You will learn to apply a wide
variety of perspectives, concepts, and methods of these disciplines to the analysis of late
modern society. This plurality and the balance between social-theoretical and
normative-ethical approaches are what make this programme so unique.

Special features: This master's programme is offered in the context of the Friedrich
Schiller University of Jena's Laboratory of the Enlightenment, a priority research area
integrating the humanities and cultural studies.

Career opportunities: As a graduate, you will not only be qualified to conduct research in
social science and philosophy but also to perform conceptional work in politics, public
administration, and non-profit organizations that deal with societal and social-philosophical
issues.

Admission requirements: Applicants need to hold a Bachelors degree or equivalent in a


related field. Non-native speakers of German must submit the DSH-2, TestDaF 4x4, or an
internationally recognised examination at the same level. A letter of motivation of no more
than three pages should be submitted.

School education:
♦ Your secondary school leaving certificate (baccalauréat, high school
diploma, etc.)
University education:
♦ All previous university degrees (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, etc.)
if available before the application deadline - otherwise, please make a note
of the anticipated date of issue
♦ The corresponding transcripts for each degree, including your cumulative
grade point average (minimum requirement is the proof of credits of the term
before last)
♦ For foreign Bachelor degrees: Proof of the grading system used by the
university
Language proficiency proof:
♦ German proficiency proof at the level DSH-2 (for details see German
language requirements)
♦ Proof of proficiency in English language at the level B1 of the Common
European Framework of Reference for Languages
Special requirements for international applicants:
♦ APS certificate: applicants with a Chinese, Mongolian or Vietnamese
degree
♦ College Entrance Examination: Iran (since 2011 no college entrance
examination, but pre-university year), Republic of Korea (Scholastic Ability
Test)
