'TL'5 lamps and HF ballasts

An environmentally conscious lighting system tailored to the application cuts energy use by up to
40%
With the introduction of the Philips 'TL'5 16mm slim diameter fluorescent tube in 1995, Philips
Lighting revolutionized the lighting world with an exceptionally energy efficient and
environmentally friendly lamp. 'TL'5, marked with the green cap, became the world’s most
advanced fluorescent lamp.

A full range
Five years later, the 'TL'5 lamp comes in three versions to suit every application. For efficient
lighting, the 'TL'5 HE (High Efficiency) is optimal. It is the logical successor to the 26 mm 'TL’D
lamp. When energy efficiency is of the utmost importance, 'TL'5 offers a high-end, attractive
design solution. The HE lamp is particularly well suited to office lighting. 'TL'5 HO (High Output)
lamps are the ideal solution for areas where higher light output is the main requirement. They are
therefore the ideal choice for lighting shops, areas with high ceilings, or where uplighting is
required. Both the High Efficiency and High Output lamps come in 2, 3, 4 and 5-ft versions and in
all the triphosphor colours. And to complete the range, there is the 'TL'5 circular lamp, which is a
very attractive, energy-efficient proposition for lighting corridors, reception areas, lift lobbies and
conference rooms.

The rotational symmetry of the 'TL'5 circular lamp concept means extra freedom of design.
Luminaire designers are able to create products which are omnidirectional in both light
distribution and design.

An integrated system
In combination with the appropriate ballast, 'TL'5 lamps offer two optimised solutions:
• 'TL'5 with HF-Performer ballast provides instant starting, optimal efficacy and long lamp life.
• 'TL'5 with HF-Regulator ballast offers higher comfort enabling controlled dimming down to 3%
without affecting lamp life.

The Ecopower of an HF-lighting solution

The use of luminaires with Philips 'TL'5 lamps combined with electronic HF ballasts reduces
energy use by up to 40%, compared with equivalent 'TL’D systems.
The luminous efficacy of up to 104 lm/W in combination with the HF-Performer ballast provides
extremely economical lighting solutions.
Benchmarking 'TL'5 HF lighting systems, savings through Philips 'TL'5 new technology and new
materials are impressive:
• 12% higher luminous efficacy,
• luminaire efficiency improved by 15%,
• overall increase in efficiency
Savings through Philips ‘TL’5 new technology

An economic life of typically 17,000 hours means minimum costs for lamp purchase and
replacement labour.
On top of these benefits, Philips 'TL'5 lamps are highly recyclable.
At the end of lamp life, the materials - phosphor, the minimal amount of mercury, metal
components and glass - can be separated and are suited for upwards recycling.
This means that the second-generation raw materials can be re-used to produce new lamps. For
'TL’ lamps this means virtually 100% recyclability with 0% quality loss.
