PART- A
1 a Distinguish between the following:
i. Mass and weight density
ii. Dynamic and kinematic viscosity.
iii. Ideal fluid and real fluid 10
b Find the kinematic viscosity of oil having 981 kg/m3. The shear stress at a point
in oil is 0.2452 N/m2 and velocity gradient at that point is 0.2 per second. 10
OR
2 a Two large fixed parallel planes are 12 mm apart. The space between the surfaces
is filled with oil of viscosity 0.972 Ns/m2. A Flat thin plate 0.25 m2 area moves
through the oil at a velocity of 0.3 m/s. calculate the drag force:
10
i. when the plate is equidistant from both the planes , and
ii. when the thin plate is at a distance of 4 mm from one of the plane surface
b An oil film of mechanical thickness 2 mm is used for lubrication b/n a square
plate of size 0.9 m x 0.9 m on an identical plane having an angle of inclination
300. The weight of square plate is 350N and it slides down the plane with a
10
uniform velocity of 0.3 m/s find the viscosity of oil in Poise.
3 a Develop Bernoulli’s equation from the principles of Euler’s equation of motion
and list the assumptions made for deriving Bernoulli’s equation 12
b The water is flowing through a pipe having diameters 20 cm and 10 cm at
section 1 and 2 respectively. The rate of flow through pipe is 35 ltr/s. The section
1 is 6 m above datum and section 2 is 4 m above datum. If the pressure at section
08
1 is 39.24 N/cm2, find the intensity of pressure at section 2.
OR
4 a The following data relate to a conical tube of length 3 m fixed vertically with its
smaller end upwards and carrying fluid in the downward direction .velocity of
flow at smaller end is 10 m/s, velocity of flow at larger end 4 m/s. pressure head 10

at smaller end is 4m of liquid, Loss of head in the tube = .

i. Find the pressure head at the larger end without considering head loss.
ii. Find the pressure head at the larger end with head loss
b A 6m long pipe is inclined at an angle of 30 0 with the horizontal. The smaller
section of the pipe which is at lower level is of 100 mm dia and the larger section
of the pipe is of 300 mm dia. If the pipe is uniformly tapering and the velocity of
10
water at the smaller section is 1.8 m/s. determine the difference of pressures
between the two sections
PART- B
5 A 400 mm diameter shaft is rotating at 200 rpm in a bearing of length 120 mm if 10
the thickness of oil film is 1.5 mm and the dynamic viscosity of the oil is 0.7
Ns/m2. Determine:
i.Torque required to overcome friction in bearing
ii.Power utilized in overcoming viscous resistance
OR
6 A pump has tapering pipe running full of water. The pipe is placed vertically with
the diameter at the base and top being 1.5m and 0.75 m respectively. The
pressure at the upper end is 250mm of mercury (vacuum), while the pressure at
10
the lower end is 18 kN/m 2. Assume head loss to be 25% of the difference in the
velocity head. Calculate the discharge. The flow is vertically upwards. The
difference of elevations is 4 m
