atie Arrington surprised a minority
of voters in South Carolina’s
first congressional district (SC-
1) republican primary on June 12.
The first term state representative and
veteran defense industry consultant ran
straight at incumbent Mark Sanford’s
nearly forgotten infidelity, mocking her
opponent’s trip to Argentina/Appalachian
Trail with a picture of her hiking. She
also set the Freedom Caucus conservative
ablaze for his failure to support Donald
Trump. Then Helsinki happened.
Political pundits David Frum and Bill
Crystal, along with political figures Newt
Gingrich and John McCain, threw shade at
the president’s loyalties following the trip
to Finland. Asked if Trump still enjoyed
her full throated support, Arrington said,
“I appreciate the president clarifying
his comments the day before yesterday

and promises to be a unique and exciting
event for residents and visitors.
The festival will be an opportunity for families,
friends and our veterans to enjoy out door
recreational activities, games and fellowship.
Sponsored by the IOP Marina businesses and
the IOP Exchange Club, the festival seeks to raise
funds for veteran access to Hamlin Creek and
surrounding waterways and marshes on IOP.
Interactive events include, Mini Safari Jet
Skiing, provided by Tidal Wave Sports, (online,
pre-registration required), introduction to
kayaking by Coastal Expeditions, (on line pre
registration required), and paddle boarding
sessions provided by Ocean Fitness, (details to be
announced). Tours, boat rentals and educational
programs will also be available.
The IOP Exchange Club’s Legacy Community
Service Programs will feature demonstrations
and exhibits by the City of Charleston Fire
Department’s Fireboat - Marine 101, IOPFD,
DNR, US Coast Guard and the Red Cross.

Department and Marine Team, and recent
member of the IOP Exchange Club is leading this
important community service.
“I am impressed with the commitment and
plans the Exchange Club has to serve our
community and those in need with their plans
to build a dock and related facilities. Safety
has been a top priority for the Exchange Club,
its members, guests and those they serve
throughout the community, such as veterans
and youth,” said Haffey.

without specific SCDOT permission. 
Nonetheless, we communicate with SCDOT about their
infrastructure, especially when we are experiencing heavy rains and
flooding. During those 17 inches of rain in much less than a month,
the aged stormwater system clearly was not up to the task, causing
the aforementioned problems. Our Town staff met with SCDOT to
discuss the worst areas, and were told SCDOT would have a crew
on the island during the week of August 13 to perform maintenance
work on some of the ditches and culverts that are not properly
flowing. Additionally, the Department was to bring its pipe camera
to assess several sections of pipes and outfalls (pipes that empty into
the marsh) that are not working properly. This will not solve all our
problems, but is a promising part of a solution.
We also encourage any resident with a problem regarding the
SCDOT stormwater system (ditches, culverts, rights of way) to submit
your problem to SCDOT via their website at: bit.ly/SI-ROW.
Don't be shy, but please remember that your report is the first step
in what may be a lengthy process, given SCDOT’s limited resources.
These folks are doing the best they can with the resources the state
affords them.
But if they don’t hear about it, they can’t start the process. And

keep healthy. While it’s easy to toss in
convenient snacks, it’s not going to do

One pediatrician wants parents to know
that sending kids to school with healthy
lunches each day doesn’t have to be
difficult or expensive. In fact, she’s on
a mission to help teach parents how to
pack healthy school lunches on a budget.
“School lunches may not seem
significant in a child’s life, but when
you add up that they are eating them
five days per week it’s quite a lot of their
calorie consumption,” says Dr. Nimali
Fernando, a Fredericksburg, Virginia-
based pediatrician who founded The Dr.
Yum Project. “Teaching them healthy
lunch habits from a young age will give
them the tools to build lifelong healthy
habits.”
Of concern for many pediatricians is
the fact that most children are simply
not eating enough healthy foods to begin
with. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention issued a report earlier this
year, which stated that only 12 percent
of adults meet the daily recommended
fruit intake, and only 9 percent reach the
daily vegetable intake. They went on to
say that most U.S. children do not meet
national recommendations for daily fruit
and vegetable servings. Add to it the fact
they report that 14 percent of preschool
aged children are considered obese, and
it’s a recipe for health disaster.
Here are tips from Dr. Yum for packing
healthy school lunches on a budget:
Plan lunches for the week. Every
weekend, sit down and make a list of
what lunches you will make throughout
the week.
Buy in bulk. Skip buying individually
packaged items like snacks. They are
often much more expensive that way.
Buy items in bulk, such as at Costco, and
use reusable containers to put the items
in. Keep it healthy by opting for things
like dried fruit, trail mix, unsweetened
applesauce, etc.
Use leftovers. Plan your dinner meals
so that you can make extra and then put
some aside for lunch the next day.
Make from scratch. When we buy items,
such as muffins, premade at the store,
they often have ingredients in them that
we would never find in our pantry. Take
it old school by going back to making
your own items from scratch. Preparing
a batch of healthy muffins, for example,
and then putting them in the freezer will
help you save money and have healthy
options on hand at all times.
Skip the sugary drinks. Buying sugary
drinks is not only expensive, but it puts too
much sugar into your child’s diet. Opt for
sending them with a reusable container
filled with water or unsweetened tea.
Take a twist on old favorites. Most kids
like a traditional PBJ, but you can add
some twists by making peanut butter and
sliced banana sandwiches, using a whole
wheat tortilla, or putting peanut butter
and jelly into a whole wheat tortilla and

grilling it like a quesadilla. Each variation
makes it a bit different, but very few
different ingredients are used, keeping it

Think smoothies. Packing a smoothie
once a week is a great way to get kids

he clarified them and yesterday
he ensured that he believes
in our intelligence community
and I appreciate the president
taking the time and listening to
leadership in Washington to be
able to clarify that.
“I personally, I am impressed
with the president on the things
that he has done on North Korea.
I’m impressed with this president
that when leadership called, that
he clarified events and ensured
them, and I’m proud of what
he’s been doing. Our National
Security, we have not been, I
have not felt as safe as I do right
now, since I was a young girl.”
Asked if her enhanced sense of
security is because her daughter
is serving in the army, Arrington
effused, “I do, I am, and thank
god for that, and the fact that
her mom laid down her job in
national security, I appreciate
that my daughter has picked up
my banner. But I absolutely think
that we’re in conversations. We’re
in a conversation with North
Korea. We’re in a conversation
with Russia. Anytime you can
keep the lines of communications
open is a benefit for human
beings.” She was equally emphatic
in accusing Joe Cunningham, her
opponent in the general election,
of a broken promise.
“Tyler Jones, T.Y.L.E.R. Jones
[consultant to the Cunningham
for Congress Campaign] tweeted
that I was ‘playing this [victim]
card...’ I saw this tweet while I
was in my living room playing
with my grandchildren… I think
that was actually one of the most
grievous, most disgusting things
I have seen. They must be pretty
desperate.”
Arrington was the victim of
a head-on collision, and was in
intensive care for weeks following
her primary June 12 win. Joe
Cunningham went on record
saying he was suspending his
campaign during Arrington’s
recovery. However, Arrington
emerged from MUSC and cried
foul. Cunningham sent out a
fundraising letter 1-2 days before
her official release from the
hospital and held a meeting with
Washington organizers, she told
the Post & Courier newspaper.
The tweet followed the article.
Asked about the president’s
appearance at NATO, Arrington
said, “… like I said before,
President Trump is one of the
best negotiators that we have in
the world. [When] he went over
to NATO, everyone came back
to North Korea. Chuck Schumer
said for sure we’d be at nuclear

war with North Korea this time
last year with President Trump in
office… That didn’t happen, and
[democrats said the world] would
fall to pieces… chicken little and
the sky is falling. He told [NATO]
things that they didn’t want to
hear and he [told] NATO ‘all we’re
asking is for you to pick up your
fair share and I will continue to
be here, but the U.S. isn’t going
to continue to carry your debt,’
and the world did not implode.
He actually came out and we are
stronger so how about we [give]
the president time to negotiate.”
Asked about the effects of the
“Tariff Wars” on SC’s working
class, Arrington said tariffs were
being put in place to end tariffs.
She said our trading partners
are levying 26%-32% tariffs on
American goods coming into their
countries, and thinks retaliatory
taxes are the strongest remedy.
Asked if she knew of other
employers considering the move
to SC to mitigate any tariff related
jobs lost at BMW and Volvo, she
demurred, but seemed to think
there were plenty of prospects.
Arrington estimates the average
salary in SC’s Lowcountry at
about $52,000 a year, and says
that’s all she will accept as her
congressional salary. She plans
to donate the remaining $125,000
to Lowcountry charities, limit
herself to 4 terms (8 years) in
office, and says she will decline
congressional retirement benefits
for starters. She also suggested
there are loads of other ways
the feds can address the nearly
$1.5 trillion annual budget deficit
without cutting Social Security,
Medicare, and Medicaid.
“Where we can save money
in our budget has nothing to
do [with] the social programs
Medicare, Medicaid, or Social
Security. The people that are
in those programs right now,
they’re the most vulnerable in
our society. I think a reflection
of society is how you take care of
the young and elderly. I worked
in the federal government. I know
better than Joe Cunningham how
we’re wasting money. There’s
[about] 22,000 different ways
to buy Microsoft Office in the
federal government. Each branch
of service has their own contract
for acquisition. We need to
[maximize] the weight of buying
in the Federal government and
especially when it comes to IT,”
said Arrington who also has the
Department of Education in her
sights to both save money and
improve education in SC.
“The first thing I’d do, and
although I think that Ms. Devos
is a very nice person, I’ve only
met her once, is shutdown the
Department of Education. I
would block that grant money
because local teachers, local
school districts, and the state of
South Carolina know better how
to educate our children than
Washington. We have to release
our teachers from the federal
requirements to test these kids
constantly, and let them teach
our children to learn versus teach
our children to pass a test,” says
Arrington, a proponent of school
vouchers and charter schools.
She also supports construction of
the border wall with Mexico.
“Absolutely! Here’s the thing;
if you’re not afraid of anyone else
why do you have a lock on your
front door? Why do you put up
a chain link fence in your yard?
I am the only candidate with a
proposal to have Mexico pay for
the wall,” She says. Arrington’s
plan is a toll on people coming
through border checkpoints. “We
have about 500,000 people come
across the border every day. At
$10.00 a car [the cost of the wall
would be covered],” she asserts.
Arrington is also a “moment of
conception” right to life proponent
and adamant defender of the
2nd amendment. She advocated
for open carry laws in SC and
bristles at the notion that her
daughter can use firearms as a
member of the military, but can’t
buy one as a private individual
after SC raised the age limit for
the purchase of firearms to 21.
Given the heat generated in
SC-1 so far, this promises to be
an interesting campaign. For

heart of the initiative for the IOP Marina
Festival. The IOP Exchange Club is excited
to offer this one-of-a-kind autographed
guitar. Raffle tickets are only $20.
This unique item is currently in
Nashville at Audio Productions Inc. Studio,
(AudioProductions.com/), being signed by
many great country artists. First on the
list were Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood,
Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Little Big
Town, Dirks Bentley, Dustin Lynch, Kane
Brown, Dan and Shea, and Trace Adkins.
Each autograph is authenticated, and over
25 artists are expected to sign.
Once the guitar is won, the IOP Exchange
Club will send a letter to the studio, where it will be put in a binder for
the musicians to read. API has shared that it is a favorite past-time
for artists to see the worthy causes their signatures have supported.
The logo on the guitar, “Veterans Water Access”, is integral to the
Exchange Club’s vision of creating a unique water access program for
those within the missions of the Isle of Palms Exchange Club – one of
which is support of US veterans.
The guitar will be presented to the raffle winner in a clear acrylic
case for protection, suitable for mounting. The case is valued at $200,
and the guitar… is….priceless.
essert crepes are perfect to have on hand for summer desserts.
You can make a batch and refrigerate the cooked crepes for
several days or for several months in the freezer. If freezing
freeze wrapped in smaller amounts such as 4 crepes on a wrapped
package so you can thaw just as many as you need. Summer fruit
combined with a complementary sugar and liquor make a perfect
pairing as well as a little lightly sweetened whipped cream. Recently
we had a some freshly picked strawberries on hand and I added
Mango Habanero sugar to the strawberries for a delicious sweet
dessert with a little spice. This sugar would also be amazing on
summer peaches. Be creative, there are endless combinations here.
Makes about 12 crepes.
Ingredients
1 cup unbleached, all purpose flour
1 Tbsp vanilla or unflavored sugar
pinch of sea salt
3 large eggs
1 c whole milk (more if needed)
2 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
2 Tbsp melted butter
pastry brush
7-8 inch non stick sauté pan
Directions
1. Bring eggs and milk to room temperature.
2. Combine flour, sugar, salt, eggs, 1 cup milk and melted butter
in a blender. Mix at high speed until completely blended into a
smooth batter, adding additional milk, if necessary (alternately,
whisk ingredients in a medium bowl). Allow to rest at least 30
minutes. May also refrigerate for up to 1 day before cooking.
3. Heat pan over medium heat. Lightly brush with melted butter.
4. Pour approximately 3 tablespoons batter in pan, tilt and swirl pan
to coat bottom with batter. Allow crepe to cook 45 seconds - 1
minute (or until batter is no longer "shiny"). Gently loosen crepe
along edges, turn and cook for a few seconds on opposite side.
5. Remove crepe from pan, layer with wax paper or parchment sheets.
6. Crepes may be wrapped in plastic wrap and frozen up to one
month.
Note: For savory crepes, omit sugar and add 1 teaspoon dried or 1

11 at the Exchange Clubhouse. Meals,
lovingly prepared by dedicated Exchange Club
volunteers, were available for dine in or take out.
Funds raised will be used towards the Exchange
Club’s waterfront enhancement project that will
provide a public access, community dock and
programming for veterans, children and families.

From the light filled shells in the oil painting, “Gifts From the Sea”
to the drama of the landscape in “Winter’s Song”, Ginny Versteegen
uses her love of the color and light to express her impressions. Her
subjects come to life through her use of oil paint on canvas and linen.
Versteegen can be found about town painting in plein air. Being
a plein air painter allows the artist to gather information for her
paintings in the field.
Versteegen moved to Mt. Pleasant in 2006, after traveling the world
and teaching art. Her work exhibits an international flair for she has
lived abroad and continues to travel and, of course, paint wherever
she goes.
This year Versteegen traveled cross-country for 2 months attending
the Plein Air Convention in Sante Fe, NM and visiting numerous
National Parks out West. “The world and it’s many wonders are my
inspiration,” says Versteegen. She is a member of Oil Painters of
America, a juried member of Charleston Artist Guild and a member
of the Mt. Pleasant Artist Guild. Her work may be found in many
private and public collections.
