Small size sunscreens

Autan®, Harmattan® and Zonda® make up the Terreal range of small terracotta sunscreens with 3 widely
differing formats: Autan® is square in section, Harmattan® is ovoid and Zonda® is rectangular (like the shape
of a firebrick). These 3 products are used in new building or renovation. The physical and chemical
characteristics are in conformity with standards NF P 13.304 and EN ISO 539.2 Method C: dimensions,
appearance, frost, efflorescence.
Terreal does not sell any standard fixing system for these products. Nevertheless, some examples of their use
are presented below, for guidance.

Large size sunscreens

Shamal® is the very latest sunscreen innovation from Terreal. Winner of the Design Trophy at the Batimat
2003 fair, the Shamal® system combines good looks (with its aerodynamic ovoid shape) and technical
performance (assessed by CSTB). By the shape of the product and the tilt of the system, the Shamal®
provides real protection from the sun with improves thermal insulation of buildings. This product is available
in 2 widths: 14 and 20 cm
The Shamal® conforms to standards NF P 13.304 and EN ISO 539.2 Method C and is offered with its own
anti-corrosion fixing system.
An environmental and health assessment sheet for HEQ projects is available for the Shamal® from Terreal

PRINCIPLE OF ASSEMBLY
OF TERREAL SUNSCREEN SYSTEMS
In the following pages, Terreal will present various examples of applications of its sunscreens. It will then be up to you to define
the system that corresponds to your project. These are the assembly principles most commonly employed on building sites.

Assembly of Autan® sunscreen

The terracotta sunscreen products (Autan®
or Harmattan®) are threaded on to a metal tube
20 x 20 mm (material and thickness to be deter-
mined as a function of wind force and span), and are
generally separated by a neoprene foam interface, a
flexible substance which takes up the tolerances
and expansion of the terracotta. The sunscreens are
also essentially glued with (2 spots of polyurethane

Assembly of Harmattan® sunscreen sealer in the central cavity) to stabilize them around
the metal tube.

Assembly of Zonda® sunscreen

Zonda® terracotta sunscreen products are assem-
bled according to the same principle, but on 2 metal
tubes 25 x 50 mm.

Assembly of Shamal® sunscreen

Shamal 14 and Shamal 20 products can be
equipped with a fixation interface kit comprising 2
aluminium plates at the ends of the product. The
whole assembly is held together by 2 threaded rods
running through it and bolted at the ends, with mul-
tiple rubber interfaces.

DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT AND SYSTEM

PERFORMANCE TESTS
(CSTB NANTES May 2004)
Sunscreens are unusual façade products. First of all,
they can be arranged in different ways in relation to
the building (offset with respect to a façade, in front
of a picture window, in a corner, on a terrace, etc.).
In addition, these elements present a degree of
porosity to wind. This may generate turbulence phe-
nomena.
In order to assess the effects of wind on the Shamal
system, a series of tests was conducted in May 2004
in the Jules Verne wind tunnel of CSTB in Nantes.
These tests were conducted on a model built to a
scale of 1/1.
The CSTB wind generator can simulate wind speeds in
excess of 200 kph (hurricane).
The experimental results show that the SHAMAL sys-
tem stands up to winds of 244 kph without suffering
any particular damage, even in the least favourable
configuration (no wall or façade behind the sunscreens).
During these trials, the aero-acoustic behaviour of the
system and its resistance to hail were also tested.
The SHAMAL system suffered no damage after a vio-
lent hailstorm (shower of hailstones propelled at 65
kph for 7 min.).
Acoustic measurements showed that the effect of
wind on the SHAMAL system generates no noise
within the range of everyday wind speeds (v<50 kph).
All these results are cited in a report by CSTB Nantes
(EN-CAPE 04-078 C – V0) and are obtainable on
request from Terreal.

These two factors not only enhance the well-being of the user,
but also reduce energy costs:
1) less artificial light (electric light)
2) less or no expenditure on air conditioning in summer
Indeed, the increasingly large areas of glass used in façades
lead to increased use of air conditioning to avoid the over-
heating caused by excessive absorption of sunlight; a solution

AIDS TO PRESCRIPTION

The Internet site www.terrealfacade.com

Aware that the questions and doubts of architects and enter-
prises relating to façade products required a dedicated
approach, Terreal has created a special internet site on terra-
cotta façades to provide a better response to the expectations
of netsurfers.
The address of this site is www.terrealfacade.com, but it can
also be reached from the general site of Terreal:
www.terreal.com. Descriptions of products, diverse illustra-
tions of project sites, technical assessments and installation
recommendations are available on-line to aid in visualizing
what terracotta can do in façades, and also for assistance in
project design at the technical level. You will also find the
details of your nearest commercial contact. The site is on line
in 5 versions: French/English/Spanish/Italian and Chinese.

The BOOK "Terracotta and architecture"

The new Façade Book “Terracotta and architecture” is the reference work on ter-
racotta façades. In its 200 pages, you will find the complete range of Terreal façade
products that have already found favour with architects. A perfect litterature of the
terracotta façade, the Book brings together photographs of Terreal's most presti-
gious achievements and a technical guide containing a wealth of diagrams and
installation details.
The book is completed with a colour chart bringing out the many tones and sur-
face finishes available for Terreal Façade products.
It is available in 5 languages: French, English, Spanish, Italian and German.
In 2005, the book “Terracotta and architecture” and the Façade CD-ROM (see next
page) were awarded the prize for the best technical documentation in building
technology.

The Façade CD-rom

Practical and easy to use, the new Façade CD-Rom will
assist you in compiling your technical description. It pre-
sents all Terreal's façade solutions, illustrated with exam-
ples from actual use, the available choices of format and
colour, details of installation of the products, standards and
Technical Assessments, not to mention the indispensable
Autocad "library of details".

An ergonomic tool, the CD-ROM will be your new ally.

It is available in French, German, English, Spanish and
Italian versions.

The acoustic brochure

Designed for acoustic specialists and architects, the acoustic brochure presents
all the acoustic façade solutions by type of building (residential, education, indus-
trial, services, highway environment).
All these zones are subject to constraints of acoustic correction which are imposed
by regulations and also meet the demand for comfort and quality of life. Terreal
embodies these requirements in the systems it proposes, which are attractive,
durable and effective.

The façade sample folder

It's difficult to choose a material without being able to touch it
and see it with your own eyes! The sample folder is your first
contact with Terreal terracotta. It presents the wide choice of
colours and finishes available for our Façade products.
You can touch them, assess their substance and texture, and
experience for yourself the fine grain of Terreal terracotta.
Don't hesitate to consult the sample folder at a meeting with
a Terreal expert. On request, he will have single colour leaflets
sent to you.

LES BRISE-SOLEIL

CONCLUSION

Terreal considers that control of exposure to sunlight is an essential factor for comfort inside buildings. We have decided to
filter light and heat using terracotta sunscreen systems that are attractive, modern and effective. Terreal is committed to the
application of the laws arising from the Kyoto protocol by developing and selling products that contribute to reducing energy
consumption and thus diminishing the greenhouse effect (this procedure is adopted in the new RT 2005 Thermal Regulations
in France).

This documentation reproduces a number of examples of applications of Terreal sunscreen products, but gives only a partial
view of many existing solutions. The Terreal Façade team is at your disposal to give you the best advice on your projects and
the use of its terracotta sunscreens.

We thank all the architects, installing companies and photographers cited in these documents.
