Suddenly we blink and September has almost gone. We seem to have achieved so much in just two months. Thank
you to everyone who has been in and out of school for our NIST Community Learning Seminars, WOWS briefings,
Class Parent meetings and other events. It is always a pleasure to talk about our school together.
I hope to see you in school soon!
Julian

This event has become a regular fixture in our service calendar and is an excellent example of a student based
initiative. This year the organization of service in the school is being developed to include a student and adult
committee which will oversee proposals for new projects in the school. I expect to be able to share more details
about this in an upcoming blog.

A reminder about the requirements at NIST for service:

In Years 7-9 student need to reflect on what they have learned about community and service and ways they have
been involved in service through the curriculum, through House and beyond. There is no requirement for number
of activities or hours.

In Years 10 and 11 students need to become more actively involved in service and be able to evaluate this. This
means that each year they have to show that they have been involved in service activities. These could be events
or days such as 'Clean up the Reef', events outside the school, in-school projects such as Habitat or individual
initiatives.

In Years 12 and 13 we hope that students will have learned how to be active participants in service as they fulfill
the requirements of the IB Diploma CAS programme.

Students in Years 7 and 8 will be taking the International Schools Assessment in Mathematics and English next
week. This assessment was developed especially for international schools to allow us to compare the general
standard of achievement in these areas compared to like schools around the world. They do not directly assess
students based on what they have been learning at NIST and students cannot prepare for them. The assessments
consider what is a normal range of achievement for students at age phases and provide us with individual and year
level feedback. We do not want our students to be stressed about this so please help your son or daughter to
understand that these are general tests and whilst they should do their best they should not be worried about
them.

y The MYP Completion Ceremony for Year 12 students and parents will be held on the 7th October in the theatre at
6.30pm
y NIST had a successful MYP moderation session for 2010 is proud of our results across all subject areas. Thank you
to all MYP teachers at NIST who support the students through their learning journey.

Year 13 parents should be aware that the exam entries for the May final exams are in progress. The cost for the
Diploma exams is an additional fee and details about that will be sent to you soon.

Please see the information below describing a few of the supports we have in place here at NIST. We realize that
it can be difficult for younger students to have the confidence to attend things that are new to them. If you have
concerns or would like help to introduce your child to one of these supports please let any member of Learning
Support know.
