Central Auckland
UUNZ is an institution that offers its students
an education with emphasis on current skills
culminating in a high status degree or diploma with
international recognition. Originally commenced
to offer programmes in English, Business, and
Information Technology.

Queensland in Australia since 2008 UUNZ has
been offering masters degrees as an extension

The successful person of
tomorrow will have many
skills. They will be multi-
lingual, with English as
one of their languages.
It is also likely that they
will hold a degree or a
diploma in a professional
discipline. Experience
in other countries will enable them to be aware of
other cultures and to have practised their anguage
and business skills. These people will be graduates
of institutions which will be focussed on preparing
international students for a productive work life.
UUNZ is such an institution. Founded and
managed by people with extensive experience in
international education, it has focussed its work on
developing English proficiency and in preparing
tertiary programmes and pathways for students to
enhance their education and life skills. It seeks to
ensure that its graduates not only develop English
and professional abilities but that they also learn
“how to learn” so that they may continue life-long
education and rise to the top of their profession.
Social Programmes
Every Friday there are a selection of activities for
language students to choose from. These may
include watching a movie to going shopping, visiting
a museum, university, or perhaps a school sporting
competition.
Every 5 weeks we have a social activity which has in
the past included the Skytower, a BBQ at a famous
beach, a Marae trip, a bus tour of Auckland etc.
Students are also informed frequently on events
that take place within the Auckland area such as
the Starlight Symphony Concert in the Auckland’s
Domain or the Lantern Festival. UUNZ students
frequently get involved with local clubs, public
schools and language schools to play soccer and
basketball.
Student Welfare
At the UUNZ Institute of Business, we have a full
time student welfare officer who can help you with
visa issues, home stay issues, insurance, banking
and any questions you have regarding school policy
and procedure.
Orientation for Business Students
On your first day at UUNZ you will be given a
thorough orientation to the school and the local area.
When you arrive you can make a hot drink in the
kitchen and sit down for a while, read your student
handbook and chat to all the other new students.
Then, at 9am, your school orientation will begin.
This orientation runs from 9am to approximately
3:30pm.
Orientation for Language Students
First, your language level will be tested. You will be
given a speaking test, a grammar test and a writing
test. This takes roughly an hour.
After this, you will be given a tour of the school and
shown all the facilities available. This is followed
by the academic orientation, where you will learn
all about the school systems, levels and how to
achieve the best results. Then you have half an
hour for lunch. After lunch, you will learn all about
homestay to ensure you make the most of the
experience and that you understand typical Kiwi
family life. This covers areas like what to do and
what not to do in your homestay.
Then you will go for a walk around the local area
to see where all the different facilities are like the
library, shops, post office, mall, recreation centre,
park and banks. During this tour you will have the
opportunity to open your own bank account at a
nearby branch.
Finally, you will come back to school and have an
introduction to all the school services available
to you; welfare services, counseling services,
activities, policies and procedures.
Student Counselling
Student Counselling Staff will always be available to
talk to students about their problems, either relating
to UUNZ Institute of Business or not. The student
counsellors are able to assist with any nationality.
We can also refer students to outside professional
counselling assistance when required.
One issue we are particularly conscious about is
culture shock. Our student counseling staff are
highly experienced in guiding students through
the transition period between life in their home
country and life in New Zealand. You should see
a student counselor immediately should you feel
uncomfortable or confused about any situation.
Facilities
UUNZ (situated within close proximity of a number of
educational landmarks such as Auckland University
and the Auckland University of Technology) is a
modern and well equipped institution with custom
designed facilities. Apart from good natural light
and comfortable seating, our lecture rooms are fully
equipped with audio-visual teaching aids. We have
computer labs with the latest flat-screen monitors
and a high speed internet connection for on-line
study.
Accommodation
If requested prior to your arrival in New Zealand, you
will be placed into a Kiwi homestay. You can expect
the homestay family to be an English-speaking
family of good character. They will provide you with
a comfortable room which includes a table, bed and
lamp. Families will provide breakfast and dinner.
The first 4 weeks of homestay will be around $220
per week. This arrangement is guaranteed by the
school.
The school has procedures for the selection and
monitoring of homestay families including an
assessment of the homestay carer’s suitability,
an on-site assessment of the suitability of the
residential facilities, and an assessment of whether
a homestay carer will provide a safe physical and
emotional environment.
Immigration
Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice
on rights to employment in New Zealand while
studying, and reporting requirements are available
through Immigration New Zealand, and can be
viewed on their website at
www.immigration.govt.nz.

English Language courses at UUNZ aim to develop all the language skills necessary

The English Programme looks at the skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing
and Grammar, although there is a particular focus on communication.

We can provide programmes that are tailor-made for groups who wish to come
to New Zealand for shorter periods combining English study with many exciting
activities. Our programmes are open to groups of students aged 14 years and above,
and are offered at any time of the year and include homestay accommodation with
New Zealand families.

These Programmes are part of the General English. Activities also include time

„„ Elementary
If you are at Elementary level, you can communicate
in a very basic way, mainly in the present and past
simple. Your vocabulary covers everyday useful
subject areas. The focus at Elementary level is
making simple sentences and replying to questions
on a range of personal and common subjects.
Students learn to talk about their likes and dislikes,
family, routines, and can order a meal in a restaurant
or go shopping in English. Basic grammar points
are learned at this level to prepare them for Pre-
Intermediate level.
„„ Pre-Intermediate
If you are at Pre-intermediate level, you have a
good basic ability to communicate and understand
English. Students learn about many subjects and
are encouraged to give their opinion on them. They
develop their English in Speaking, Writing, Listening
and Reading skills with confidence in the present,
past and future simple tenses. Tasks on social
situations such as shopping, booking a hotel room,
travel, and making conversation in English are
also taught. Grammar includes an understanding
of adjectives, adverbs, comparatives, articles,
possessives, and basic prepositions.
„„ IELTS Preparation
Our Advanced class provides a study package
focusing on students who plan to sit an IELTS,
other examination courses or to further study at
certificate, diploma or degree level. It includes an
introduction to the kinds of English employed in a
variety of academic disciplines with the emphasis on
skills development and the content of the academic
IELTS examination. Students wanting to undertake
General IELTS are also catered for.
• The Academic Version is intended for those
who want to enroll in a university or other
institutions of higher education and also for
professionals in an English-speaking country.
• The General Training Version is intended for
those planning to undertake non-academic
training or to gain work experience, or for

If you are at Intermediate level, you understand
and speak English with some confidence. Students
learn how to write in both a formal and informal style.
We teach a range of grammar points and relevant
vocabulary to talk and read about a wide number
of subjects. Focus is also on pronunciation, tone
and style of delivery. We cover all the main tenses
and grammar points to make sentences, question
forms and clauses.
„„ Upper Intermediate
At Upper-Intermediate level, you have an effective,
but not perfect, use of English. We prepare you
for everyday situations in an English language
environment with confidence. There are practical
exercises for extended conversations or discussions
and a wide range of vocabulary in use to cover
almost every circumstance. The English skills that
have been developed combined with grammar
work brings review and new input together. We
set activities which helps to develop the learners`
ability to work independently. An academic style of

About TOEIC and TOEFL Testing

UUNZ is an accredited TOEIC nd TOEFL testing centre.These tests are English
language proficiency tests for people whose native language is not English.
It measures the everyday English skills of people working in an international
environment. The scores indicate how well people can communicate in English with
others in business, commerce and industry. The TOEFL Test is a computerized test
and is conducted over the weekend.

Ross Mathieson
Systems Analyst

In 1987, together with Brian Peace and Paul Grey, he co-founded Peace Software in Auckland, a
company specialising in the development of software for the Utility Industry (Gas and Electricity).
He was also the founding Chair (2001-2004) of the Auckland University Software Engineering
Advisory Board.

Dr John Hinchcliff
Former Vice-Chancellor of Auckland University of Technology

John Hinchcliff taught philosophy, was a university chaplain, head of Humanities at RMIT
in Melbourne, and CEO of ATI, AIT and AUT University, an Auckland City Councillor
and president of the Auckland Rotary Club. He earned a Masters and a PhD degree in
philosophy and received the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Meri.

Rob worked for UUNZ Institute of Business from 2003 to 2008 as ESOL teacher, lecturer,
