Experiment: Preparation of a salt by Titration

Aim: To prepare a salt by neutralization of dilute sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide

Apparatus:

Burette
Pipette
Filter funnel
Glass rod
Conical flask
Evaporating dish
Measuring cylinder
Retort stand, clamp
Bunsen burner, tripod stand, wire gauze
White tile

Chemicals:
Sulphuric acid (2M)
Sodium hydroxide (1M)
Phenolphathein indicator

Procedure:

1. Using a pipette, measure 25.0 cm3 of sulphuric acid into a conical flask. Add two
drops of phenolphthalein to the acid.
2. Fill a burette with sodium hydroxide. Open the burette tap to adjust the volume of
liquid to 0.0 cm3. Record this reading as the initial burette reading (V1 ).
3. Place the conical flask containing the sulphuric acid on a white tile below the
burette and add the sodium hydroxide, a few drops at a time, into the flask. Swirl
the flask gently to ensure the acid is mixed with completely with the alkali.
4. As soon as the phenolphthalein indicator changes from colourless to pink, stop
adding sodium hydroxide. Record the new burette reading which is the final
burette reading(V2 ).
5. Find the volume of sodium hydroxide used in the titration by substrating the
initial burette reading from the final reading (V = V2 - V1 ).
6. Using a pipette, measure 25.0 cm3 of sulphuric acid into a clean conical flask. No
indicator is added.
7. Add V cm3 of sodium hydroxide from a burette to the conical flask containing
sulphuric acid. A salt solution is formed.

8. Pour the salt solution into an evaporating dish. Evaporate it to obtain a saturated
solution. Cool the saturated solution to obtain the crystals. The solution is filtered
to obtain the pure salt crystals.

Results:

Initial burette reading (V1 ) cm3

Final burette reading (V2 ) cm3
Volume of sodium hydroxide used cm3
(V =V2 - V1 )

Questions:

1. Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction between sodium
hydroxide and dilute sulphuric acid.
