I. Meetings
a. Officers – 1st Tuesday of each month
i. Organize new business
ii. Review old business
b. General – 2nd Tuesday of each month
i. Approve business by simple majority of members present
ii. Educational, leadership & service presentations
iii. Meetings follow parliamentary procedure
iv. Held in the Auditorium

II. Officers
a. Elections will be held at the last general meeting of the school year. All members in
good standing are eligible to run for office
b. Duties
i. President
1. Presides over meetings
2. Provides agendas for meetings
3. Appoints members to committees
4. Member of the executive committee
ii. Vice-President
1. Presides in the absence of president
2. Assists in general meetings
3. Keeps meeting attendance records
4. Member of the executive committee
iii. Secretary
1. Records and prepares minutes of all meetings
2. Writes invitations, publicity, thank you notes and other
correspondence
3. Member of the executive committee
iv. Treasurer
1. Records money transactions
2. Makes membership roster
3. Member of the executive committee
v. Parliamentarian
1. Assists with procedural matters at meetings
2. Keeps a record of service hours
3. Member of the executive committee
vi. Historian
1. Maintains a scrapbook to be displayed at meetings
2. In charge of press releases of new inductees
3. Member of executive committee

III. Dues & Responsibilities


a. Dues will be $10.00 annually
i. Dues cover the cost of induction supplies
ii. Dues will be paid to the school bank and the receipt will be given to the
treasurer during the first marking period of the school year. Members not paying their dues by
the first general meeting in November will be faced with a rate increase to $15.00. Members not
paying their dues by the first general meeting in December will be taken off the roster and will
not participate in induction.
b. Responsibilities
i. Grades
ii. Members are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50
iii. Members who earn an ‘F’ in any class will be asked to resign from the
club
iv. Members who slip below the minimum will be allowed one nine-week
grading period to improve their GPA. This will be allowed only once during the student’s NHS
membership
v. Members must maintain the standards of leadership, service and
character that were the basis for their selection
A member who is caught in a major infraction of school rules will be dismissed from NHS. The
student will have an opportunity to defend him/herself to the faculty council, who will then make
a decision upon future membership
vi. NHS stoles
1. Worn by members in good standing at graduation
2. Current cost $22.00
3. Seniors may rent or buy stoles

IV. Service Projects


a. Student members will complete at least 15 hours of service each year they are a full
member of NHS.
b. Up to 5 hours of service can be individual service tasks.
c. The parliamentarian will record hours of service completed
d. Ten hours must be NHS Group Project Hours
i. NHS-sanctioned hours are only obtainable at sponsored NHS events,
which are planned, scheduled, and advertised by the NHS.
ii. *SENIORS* Individual service projects will be approved by advisor
before April and will be recorded by the parliamentarian

V. Annual review of Bylaws


a. Will be reviewed in the last officer meeting of the year
b. Updated bylaws will be distributed at the first general meeting

VI. Individual Service Hours


a. Individual Service Hour Projects must be approved by the faculty advisor and proof
of completion of the event (signed letter, etc…) clearly stating what was done, how many hours
were obtained, and a signature (over 21 years of age) is necessary. The NHS reserves the
right to refuse credit for invalid community service hours.
Community Service is defined as volunteer service beyond the confines of the traditional
classroom that fosters civic responsibility for the benefit of the community. This service is non-
paid, non-graded, and non-punitive.
Examples of valid Community Service include:
*Tutoring Children
*Building homes in low income areas
*Assisting the elderly
*Performing habitat restoration
*Volunteering for fire departments and emergency services
*Helping with civic beautification
*Giving blood or supplying hair for cancer victims
*Church volunteer, such as an Usher or Sunday School Teacher
*Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army
Community Service is Not:
*Babysitting
*Mowing your lawn
*Service where the recipient is a family member or where a family member supervises the
service
*Service to a student-run club or organization (anything that is already part of your job
description for that organization)
*Service performed for a profit-making organization
*Work during regular school hours (SENIORS)
*Work often done by student aides, such as office, teacher, or library aides
*Normal extracurricular activities, such as sports and sports management, and participation in
school performance activities
b. Hours completed during the summer months CAN be put forward towards the
following year’s hours for the individual hour requirement (assuming successful approval)

VII. Attendance
a. Members who will be missing a meeting must give prior notification (preferably
written) to an officer and/or the faculty advisor
b. All persons that miss a mandatory meeting for ANY reason will be given a
written/verbal warning.
c. Missing two (2) meetings without prior notification, or unexcused absences, will
result in the member being placed on probation with the possibility of dismissal from the NHS
i. Probation: Members on probation are barred
from attending NHS Service Events and are flagged for possible dismissal
from their NHS membership upon review of a specialized faculty council. If
YOU are placed on probation, it would be very beneficial for you to convene
with officers and/or faculty members to explain your absences (and other
additional points of interest) to avoid dishonorable discharge.
ii. Officers with attendance problems will be asked to resign their office,
and then will be placed on probation for any further occurrence.
iii. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MEMBER TO REQUEST ANY
INFORMATION PERTAINING TO MISSED MEETINGS

VIII. Penalties
a. Probation
i. Members placed on probation will be awarded a 5 hour increase in their
yearly completion requirement (normally 15) to be completed upon their reinstatement
b. Other
i. Minor infractions that would not warrant probation may merit a 1 to 3
hour service hour increase. This penalty can only be enforced as a power of a faculty advisor or
board.

IX. Dismissal from NHS Membership


a. A member who is caught in a major infraction of school rules may be dismissed
from NHS. That student will have an opportunity to defend him/herself to the faculty council
who will then make a decision upon future membership. These infractions include:
*Cheating on an exam
*Plagiarism
*Fighting
*Suspension from school
