Classroom Policies
Disclaimer: Teaching policies and regulations for this course are not open for discussion or negotiation.
This syllabus has been constructed to be as complete as possible but is by no means a binding
document. I reserve the right to alter policies, procedures, and the syllabus as needed. Please utilize the
website regularly as any changes to the syllabus will be posted there.

How to proceed through the course: To accomplish the course objectives, the course material may be
presented, and assessment done through any of the following: (1) videos and lectures, (2) in-class or
online discussions/team assignments/quizzes, (3) case analysis, (4) exams (5) self-assessments and
presentations. It is the responsibility of the student to do the required readings and assignments prior to
the class meeting or online meeting, if applicable. Students are expected to demonstrate a positive and
willing attitude during team/group assignments; failure to do so may lead to a reduction in your
participation grade, if applicable. Assignments must be prepared in a professional manner and must
include the student’s name and student number, the course and which section, the instructor’s name,
and the date submitted. The due dates for these assignments will be clearly publicized by the instructor
and you must refer to the weekly assignment schedule for due dates. If you have any questions about
the assignment or due date, it is your responsibility to get them answered at the earliest possible time.
The grade that you receive will reflect not only the content, but also the presentation and organization of
the assignment as well. If, for any reason, there is an emergency and you will be unable to complete the
course requirements, please contact the instructor ASAP.

When taking a typical 3 credit hour course, students should plan to spend at least 9 hours per week
doing coursework and studying for that course regardless of the mode of delivery (online, hybrid, face-
to-face). Some weeks might require more study time, and some weeks might require less time. In
addition, this is only a general guideline as time spent will also depend upon learning level at entrance of
the course, ease of comprehension of the material, student time management, among other factors.

Handling of assignments:
Dropbox: Written work will be submitted via the dropbox in the online classroom
Quizzes: Quizzes can be found in the Cengage Mindtap online classroom
Assignment Sheets: Will be found on the Content Page and are sometimes also posted on the course
News/Home Page in the online classroom

Discussion Boards: Can be found under the Discussions tab in the online classroom
Videos/Video Lectures: Can be found in the Video Corner on the Course Home/News page and usually
also will be given links in a word doc in the Content page in the online classroom
 Check Course News Page and your Falconmail/Course Email 2-3x/week and BEFORE beginning
any assignment so see if there are updates, comments, or questions from the instructor.
 Check your Weekly Assignment Schedule for deadlines/due dates
 Work on your reading, quizzes, homework, papers, or experiment (whichever is due or
upcoming)
 Assignments must be prepared in a professional manner and must include the student’s
name and should CLEARLY indicate what question is being answered by using identifiers
like writing out the question, or numerals that correspond to the homework questions.
Professionalism means that you correct typos, use proper grammar and spelling, and the
work is clearly organized. (see rubrics for further assessment tools)
 All assignments must be in Microsoft Word compatible document (usually open office
docs will open, but try to save in the .doc format) docs will NOT open. Please save in a
.doc, .docx, .pdf format. You must change the file format to submit docs to be
compatible. Check online services that may assist you or call the DSC IT helpdesk.
 If you have any questions about the assignment or due date, it is your responsibility to
get them answered at the earliest possible time.
 If a technical problem arises with your home computer, please use one of the several
computer labs located on the Daytona State College Campus. There is a BAS computer
lab located on the 4th floor of the BAS building in addition to those in the library and
student center.

Communication:
The best way to reach me is by email. You can use the “Course Mail” function in the Florida Online
classroom or mooreta@daytonastate.edu. I will check in periodically throughout the day on weekdays
and occasionally on weekends. Note: I primarily work during normal business hours. If you post
questions, emails, or comments at another time, please remain patient in expecting a response. All
students must be able (and are expected) to access the online classroom, their FalconMail email,
discussion posts and checking all new Course News/Home page posts at least 2-3x per week. All
emails/videos/news posts from the instructor are required materials in the course and it is assumed that
all students have read the information in a timely manner. Student may expect responses to email and
phone voice mail within 3 business days. Students may expect assignment grades within one week after
submission for typical homework assignments and usually between 7-10 days for major projects, papers,
group projects, or finals. Discussion boards are used for the attendance posting and to communicate
with your groups during the group project.

Interaction: Students may interact with the instructor through email, phone, or online/video office hours
and through submission of course assignments. Students will primarily interact with other students in
the group project and will be given a restricted group discussion forum to facilitate the communication
within the group. Students can also select the best method to communicate with their peers to
accomplish course and task objectives.

Attendance Policy: Students must submit attendance during the first week of the course per the
weekly assignment syllabus from the instructor. Students are expected to attend online courses
by submitting assignments and continuing to participate in the course. Merely logging into the

course is not sufficient to be considered attendance in an online course. Proof of attendance is
through continued action and participation on the student’s behalf.

Late Work/Make-up Work and Exams: Late work will have approximately 1 letter grade reduced
from the score earned on the assignment. Late work will not be accepted more than 1 week
past the original due date without documentation of extenuating circumstances. Quizzes will
not be reopened (if applicable).

Classroom Etiquette: For 50/50 courses: All students should be on time for class. Attend to your needs
before entering the room. Students who come late or leave during the class are a distraction to both the
instructor and other students. The use of cellular phones, MP3 players and other electronic devices is
also a distraction. Please ensure electronic devices are off (or on silent alert). If an emergency arises,
please be courteous to your fellow students and leave quietly. Finally, cell phones, watch alarms,
beepers, etc. are strictly prohibited in the examination room.

Evaluation/Assessment Methods: Instructor will use any combination of the following types of
evaluation and assessment methods: essay, homework questions, written research papers,
quizzes, discussion boards, group projects, presentations, and others as announced. The instructor
reserves the right to alter the grade structure and modify assignments including additional
assignments and unannounced quizzes. Evaluation will take into account student’s attendance,
tardiness, and class participation.
Written homework questions: Students will respond to questions relating to textbook and course
materials through a series of written homework questions.
Living Leadership Journal: Students apply leadership principles to an activity in their personal life or work
or can analyze a previous experience and discuss how course concepts were applicable in that context.
Group Project: Students will participate in a group project that will span over at least two weeks or more
of the course. They will create, develop, communicate, collaborate, and present the requirements of the
group project assignment in the team setting.
Other Written Papers and Projects as described in the weekly assignment schedule.

Grading Policy: The instructor uses a weighted grading system for the course.
Overall grades will be calculated based upon the following criteria:
Letter Grade Definition Numeric Averages
A Excellent 90 – 100%
B+ Good 87-89
B 80 - 86
C+ Average 77-79
C 70 –76
D+ Poor 67-69
D 60-66
F Failure 0 - 59
Students must receive a grade of "C" or better in all courses to meet B.A.S. degree completion
requirements.

Course Grading:

Leader Surveys Assignment 5%
Textbook Chapter Quizzes 50
Leaders and Teams Movie Report 15
Group Virtual Collage Project 20
Living Leadership Journal 10
Total 100%

An incomplete grade will NOT be given UNLESS the following criteria are met:
A grade of “I” may be issued only when a student who is passing the course but who, for valid
and unforeseen reasons, is not able to complete the course requirements within the semester.
In order for a student to receive an "I" grade, the student must have completed a minimum of
70% of the graded course work with a passing grade and have been turning work in regularly
and on time. The incomplete work must be made up before the middle of the next major
semester. “I” grades automatically convert to “F” grades if the make-up requirements are not
met and the appropriate grade change is not submitted by the deadline as published in the
College Catalog. *Incompletes are not granted to students who think they may fail or not pass a
course who have not completed the requirements listed above.

Class Schedule: The class schedule and assignment due dates are included in the Weekly Assignment
Schedule (see end of document).

Class Withdrawal Process: Example: Students can withdraw from this class prior to the date listed in
the Academic Calendar. It is not necessary to have approval from the instructor to withdraw from the
course, but you should discuss the situation with the instructor prior to any action. Many times issues
and concerns can be resolved with communication. Please review Refund/Repayment Policy in the
current college catalog and also check with the Office of Financial Aid to determine how this withdrawal
might affect your current and future aid eligibility.

Student Rights & Responsibilities

Students are responsible for reading and following all college policies outlined in the Student Handbook.
Some of the most important are summarized below. The Handbook can be accessed at
http://www.daytonastate.edu/academics.html under “Student Resources.”

Academic Integrity
In order to preserve academic excellence and integrity, the College expects you to know, understand, and
comply with the Academic Integrity Policy, which prohibits academic dishonesty in any form, including,
but not limited to, cheating and plagiarism. Grades conferred by instructors are intended to be, and must
be, accurate and true reflections of the coursework actually produced and submitted by you. Cases of
suspected academic dishonesty may be reported to the Judicial Affairs Office for resolution. If a student
is warned about potential academic dishonesty or plagiarism issues but it is found to be an unintentional
or mistake in format rather than intent to commit a violation, grade reduction may be taken, especially
after the potential problem has been brought to the attention of the students.
Honor Pledge: I, as a member of the DSC community, pledge that I will neither give nor receive
unauthorized aid in my work nor will I present another’s work as my own, nor will I tolerate anyone who
does. For more information on academic integrity, view Honor Code.
