Chapter I
Introduction

1.1 General Background

Tourism is a human activity, which has proved important for all nations since it
fosters international brotherhood and understanding. In Nepal, the modern
conceptof tourism is a recent phenomenon. Although the inflow of Visitors for differe
d purpose was there for very early periods, the study of the inflow of foreign visitors
to Nepal can be classified in the following three stages.

 Early Historical Review of Tourism in Nepal

Before the unification of Nepal by late king Prithivi Narayan Shah, tourism was
closely related to religion, politics and business. Many visitors, namely from the
neighboring countries of China, India and Tibet visited Nepal for religious
purpose. "Manjushree" is the first visitors in Nepal to make the valley fit for
human habitation either India or China. During the time of Lichhavi rulers the
famous Chinese traveler Huich-Tsang and also Chinese envoy, Li-Y-
Pio and Wang Hiuentse visited Nepal with his companions. (Shrestha, 2000)
 Tourism after Unification of Nepal
After the unification of Nepal, visitors from Britain came to Nepal for political
purpose. Among the Knox, Hamilton and captain Kirkpatrick were notable
persons. During this region was vertically closed for outsiders, especially
Europeans in other to preserve unity and independence. (Gurung, 1978)
 Tourism After 1950
1846: One of the important dates in Nepal's history: it marked the advent of the
"RANA" regime that lasted until 1950; 104 years during which the successive
Kings of Nepal, although formally remaining on their throne with all the external
decorum were in fact relegated to purely nominal and honorific role, deprived of
all power and authority. During that period, Nepal was a forbidden land for
foreigners except for the
small traders and Indian pilgrims. Outsiders were locked upon with an eye of susp
icion, an account of close relationship with the British in India, only a few

1
foreigners changed to visit Nepal. From time to time several distinguished
botanists and naturalists including Sir Brian Hodgson, F.R.S. (who was resident
from 1822-1843) and Sir Joseph Hooker F.R.S. who had made botanical surveys
and collection of Nepal's flora and fauna, traveled the country. Among the
European visitors, British King George v Prince of Wales came to Nepal for the
purpose of hunting tigers in Tarai forest in 1911 and 1921 respectively. Due to the
deliberately conservative policy of Rana rulers, Nepal remained virtually isolated
and unknown to the outside world. From the point of view of tourism, the great
revolution of 1951 was a boon for Nepal. In the realization of this fact, Nepal
obtained the membership of international union of official travel organization in
1959 and pacific area travel association in 1964. Development of tourism was
established to make organized efforts at the government level for the development
of tourism and acceleration for rural people. A tourism center was established to
provide training facilities for tourism market. Tourism act was
promulgated in 1964 after slightly increasing number of tourists and the very
importance. Ministry provides incentives to the tourism industry and business,
industrial enterprises act and foreign investment and technology transfer act 1992
was promulgated in Nepal gazette by HMG. In present contest,
the government and private sector are jointly trying to accelerate the Nepalese
tourism. (Gurung, 1978)
 Scope of Tourism in Nepal
In Nepal, tourism is not only important economic sources of foreign currency but
also a major employment generator. By the medium of tourism people, can
exchange Knowledge. And create understanding among the people of the world. T
ourism provides the opportunities to understand society, habits, food and the way
of lifestyle of different nations. Directly and indirectly Nepalese people are getting
benefits from the tourism, many people are getting employment from this sector.
Flock-lore, traditional ceremonies, art and industry are reviewed because tourists
are interested in them. (Basnet, 2016)
 A Brief History of Trekking in Nepal
In 1965, trekking was introduced in Nepal for the very first time by Colonel
Jimmy Roberts. Lieutenant Colonel James Owen Merion Roberts (1916–1997)
was one of the greatest and most prolific explorer of mountains of the twentieth

2
century; a highly decorated British Army officer who achieved fame as “The
Father of Trekking” in Nepal. His idea, innovative at that time, was to make the
mountaineering experience for climbers a bit easier and more comprehensible than
what was present during the initial commencement of mountaineering in Nepal.
His ideas included providing tents to the hikers and having them readily available,
paired together with the Sherpa, for guidance up in the alienated terrains of the
high Himalayas. This neoteric idea of his became a huge success and was
encompassed by many, which then led to the availability of the mountaineering
field be open and easily accessible to a wide range of factions. To say the least, his
pioneering in this new field of mountaineering in Nepal became a success and was
an absolute crowd-puller.
Nowadays, the whole manifestation of trekking in the mountains has become a well-
established epiphany; there are coterie or solo travelers trudging through hills and
isolated valleys in the remote destination of the country, walking about six to seven
hours each day with their equipment and bag packs generally carried by porters or
animals like yaks or donkeys, until they reach their destination of the base camp of the
mountains. This common perdition has seen much modification throughout time, as
there are availabilities of many more options regarding the destinations now, and the
mode of travel has also been updated to suit modernization- with the inclusion of
helicopter rides and provident availability of health care facilities. The trekking
journeys are also complimented heavily for travelers because of the convenience of
delicious regular meals, sleeping bags and other necessary equipment at one’s
disposal and warm accommodative tents throughout the trekking journey.
On top of all of this, the trekker may also carry his own personal pack that has his
camera equipment, clothes or even snacks and trinkets. It’s astounding how much the
trekking industry has evolved since the humble beginnings of mountain hiking in the
time of Colonel Jimmy Roberts.
Of course, the updates on the trekking propriety now has a wide range of trekkers,
from young people to people who are old, a contrast with the trekking expeditions of
Roberts, where his first ascend to the Lookout peak of Masherbrum (formally known
as K1, the 22nd highest mountain in the world) in Pakistan was done in a completely
contemporary way for his time, climbing without any other camaraderie for company,
accompanied only by his Gorkhali companions.

3
Roberts was selected for the 1940 British Mount Everest Expedition, a feat which he
did with Bill Tilman, considered a first trekker of Nepal. The British Mount Everest
expedition was the first mountaineering expedition with the express aim of making
the first ascent of Mount Everest. The first expedition to climb Everest was conducted
in 1922 and was also the first expedition that attempted to climb Everest using oxygen
bottles. Roberts and Tilman were part of the 1940’s expedition team.
During King Tribhuwan’s India visit, the King met Boris Isonomic, a Russian ballet
dancer who was running a club in India at that time. Boris convinced the king that
people would like to visit Nepal and would actually pay for the experience, citing to
the King that the country could make profit from these visits. Lissonivich, who was a
Russian émigré to Nepal, then went on to establish the Royal Hotel in Nepal, with the
purpose of accommodating visitors. The Royal Hotel was the country’s first Hotel.
Delighted by Nepal’s vicinity, the visitors proved to be swayed by the prospect of
touring the country. Thus, Nepali tourism had its first beginnings. The Royal Hotel
and the Yak and Yeti bar became the meeting place for climbers from the fifties until
seventy-one, when the Royal Hotel was closed. Colonel James Roberts was the first
person to realize that trekking would appeal to tourists, and was also the first one to
do something with the revelation. Jimmy Roberts had spent years in Nepal attached to
the British residency and accompanied Tilman on his first trek. In 1965, he founded
“Mountain Travel” in the Kali Gandaki area, the first of Nepal’s trekking companies
and the ingénue for the adventure travel industry. (Alex, 2015)

2.1.5 Product/Service Line of Malla Travels & Trek Services

 Trekking in Everest Region

Located in the eastern half of Nepal, the Everest region offers a wide range of
trekking experiences. From the well- developed trail to Everest Base Camp to
treks in remote semi- wilderness areas, there is a choice to suit all comers. The
main ethnic group that visitors will encounter in the Everest region is the Sherpas
in upper part and Rai and Tamang, Brahmin and Chettri farmers in the lower hills.
Add to the mountain peaks, glacial lakes, rhododendron forests, native flora and
fauna, traditional villages and ancient Buddhist monasteries, all go to make this
region a spectacular destination.
 Trekking in Annapurna Region
The middle hills of Nepal are dominated by Annapurna region. The Annapurna
Conservation Area is the most geographically and culturally diverse protected
area. This region provides you with unparalleled access to spectacular horizons of
Snowy peaks with a fascinating insight into the life of middle hill Nepalese and
their wide culture. There are many ethnic groups living and working the region,
from Hindu farmers to Tibetan Lamas. You can find Nepal's most popular
trekking routes in Annapurna. Any trek in this region is an experience to
remember.

10
 Trekking in Lang tang Region
The Langtang Valley is a beautiful alpine region to the North of Kathmandu
bordering Tibet. The Langtang trek offers the greatest diversity with the least
effort of Any trek in Nepal. There is a series of north- south running valleys that
provide a variety of possible trekking routes. The Gosainkunda and Helambu
regions lie to its south; these can be combined with Langtang to make treks from 7
days to 21 days. The area was designated Nepal's first Himalayan National Park in
1971; it is inhabited by Tamang people whose religious practices, language and
dress are much more similar to those of Tibet than to the traditions of their cousins
in the middle hills.
 Nepal Camping Trekking Routes
Since we started this profession, as a professional guide and tour operator we have
been putting our best efforts to seek and introduce my clients to least visited areas
of Nepal Himalayas. These treks are away from the more frequented trails and
provide a wilderness experience in both natural and cultural aspect. You can
observe the remote mountain villages of Nepal where people are surviving by
growing their own food, untouched by modern civilization, no politics and they
have a quite happy life with their own distinctive culture and traditional that might
be very interesting &unique to observe for foreigners. Actually, these treks give
you a very special experience of the real Nepal and also this help to develop these
poor areas.
 Trekking in Non-Touristic Areas
Since we started this profession, as a professional guide and tour operator we have
been putting our best efforts to seek and introduce my clients to least visited areas
of Nepal Himalayas. These non-touristy areas are of course away from crowed
and beaten trails but very superb.
 Peak Climbing in Nepal
The trekking peaks of Nepal offer a great potential adventure and exploration and
are less expensive than large-scale expeditions. For travelers, there are 18 minor
peaks open for Alpine climbing. Unique Adventure International provides all
kinds of detailed information and logistical support required for climbing
arrangements to attempt summits. In spite of the fact that the altitude of the peaks
is below 6500m, they offer a serious challenge often passing over rocky, icy and

11
snowy terrain. The use of ropes and other mountaineering equipment is also
necessary on these treks. It is strongly recommended that the climbers having
technical know-how on snow and ice climbing can attempt these peaks, except for
a few easy peaks such as Meera Peak (6476m). The climbing of these peaks is
monitored by Nepal Mountaineering Association and is subject to the rules &
regulations formulated by this Association.

 Village Tour in Nepal

In the past touring in Nepal has meant either trekking along the trails or staying in
specially built resorts. Getting to know the local and their culture has been
difficult. Now you can experience a stay in an unspoiled village living as a family
member. Village tours allow visitors to experience a stay in a typical Nepali
village. This gives visitors an opportunity to observe the real Nepalese cultural
tradition from the closest quarter and intermingle with the locals.
Besides, any expenses made at that level directly contribute to the welfare of the
local community, hence giving the visitors a sense of satisfaction.
Village Tour differs from trekking in a couple of important ways. First, although
some walking is involved, and a trekking permit may even be required, exercise is
secondary to the cultural experience: the whole point is to stay in one village and
get to know its people, not to cover distances between villages. Second,
accommodation is in an actual home, not a trekking inn filled with other
backpackers, so the cross-cultural exchange is more authentic. Village Tours are
conducted in Sirubari, Bandipur, Kakani, Gorkha, and other places. But I highly
recommend my clients to observe Sirubari village, as it is one of the best typical

12
village in Nepal. So here I have described about a village of Sirubari and its
itineraries in detail.
 Sirubari Village
The village is a totally unspoiled Gurung settlement set in the hiss at 1700 meters
above sea level. The climate is ideal at any season of the year. During the
September to June season with warm days and nights. Sirubari village is a short
drive and walk from Pokhara, the major tourist center for the Annapurna.
 Bandipur Village
Located on a 1000m ridge in Tanahu district some 140km west from Kathmandu
and 60km east from Pokhara, Bandipur's hallmark is its beautiful scenery. At the
eastern part of the town is the pagoda-roofed Bindyabasini temple which houses
goddess Durga, Bandipurs guardian deity.
 Kakani Village
Located 29 km northwest of Kathmandu city, the fabulous holiday area of Kakani
features attractions ranging from beautiful alpine scenery to the magnificent
Himalayan panorama particularly of Ganesh Himal. Other peaks that can be
closely seen from Kakani.
 Daman Village Tour
For those seeking the ultimate pan Himalayan view, Daman is the place to go.
Locate 80 km south west of Kathmandu valley, Daman (2400m) offers the only
unimpeded view of the entire Himalayan range. Daman is located on the
Tribhuvan highway between Kathmandu and Birgunj. There is a view tower fitted
with long range telescope. Daman can be reached in four hours from Kathmandu.
 Ghalegaun - Ghanapokhara (Village Tourism)
Situated in north central Nepal, GhaleGaun and Ghanapokhar are mainly Gurung
settlements promoting unique village tourism and practicing community based
hospitality. Ghalegaun trekking has substantially contributed to the promotion of
village tourism in Nepal.
