sert the end of the cablewire into the carburetorcon-
trol arm and placethe cableunderthe clamp as shown
below. Movethe throttle control on the handlebar to

The lower control rod is attachedto rear of the Roto-

Spaderchassis.The upper control rod is attachedto
the handle panel assemblyand is shippedwith a wing
nut, a lock washer,and a turnbuckleassembled to the

nut & screwit up the rod (awayfrom the turnbuckle),

through the slots in the stabilizerand securingit with

6. HANDLE ADJUSTMENT
The handle assemblyis adjustableto three positons;
high, central, and low. Your Roto-Spaderhas been
shippedwith the adjustmentin the central position.
The handle height may be changedto satisfy indivi-
dual operator preferenceby looseningthe four bolts
which attachthe handlebracketsto the chassis.Loos-
en the rear bolts approximatelyone turn, loosenthe
front bolts approximatelyf ive turns to insurethat the
s h o u l d e ro n t h e b o l t i s c l e a ro f t h e i n d e xh o l e si n t h e

HOW TO USE YOUR ROTO.SPADER
The Roto-Spaderis a precisionbuilt machinedesigned
for seedbed preparation,cultivating,furrowing,com-
p o s t i n g ,a n d m u l c h i n g .l t i s e n g i n e e r e d
to minimize
the hardestwork in the vegetableor flower garden,to
till the soil for plantingand cultivating,and for per-
forming many other useful labor savingtasks in the
garden.
T R A N S P O R TW H E EL A N D S T A K E A D J U S T M E N T :
The spaderis shipped with the wheelsadjustedsuch
that the unit sits level.Duringdigging,as the tinesen-
ter the groundand thelront of the spaderlowers,the
wheelsmust be raisedto level the unit. This is essen-
tial for proper engineoperation.This adjustmentis
made by removingthe latch pin from the wheel yoke.
When the pin is replaced,rotate it until it passes
through the slot in the chassis.The working depth of
the spaderis determinedby the positionof the stake.
Remove the stake pin to raise or lower the stake.
C O N T R O L L I N GS P E E DA N D S P A D I N GA C T I O N :
The Stake acts as a brake for the spaderand controls
the depth and speedat which the machinewill ope-
rate.By increasingthe depth of the stake,the forward
speedof the machineis reduced,and the workingdepth
is increased.When the stake is raised,the working
depth of the machineis reducedand the forward speed
is increased.The working depth of the machinemay be
predeterminedby settingthe stakeand wheelsso that
the wheelsareaboutfour inchesfrom the groundwhen
the tines and stakeare restingon the ground.This set-
t i n g w i l l p e r m i t a w o r k i n gd e p t h o f a b o u t f o u r i n c h e s
when the engine is set to run at about 3/4 throttle.
Whenpresettingthe workingdepth,the handlesshould
be a little above waist height becausethe complete
spaderwill be lower when the tines and stake pene-
trate the ground. The best handlesetting is at waist
levelwhile the spaderis beingused.The abovesettings
must be adjustedto meet the conditions of the soil to
be worked. The best method of operationwill be de-
t e r m i n e db y t h e s o i l c o n d i t i o n . I n s o m es o i l s ,t h e d e -
sired depth is obtainedthe first time over the garden.
In other soils,the desireddepth is obtainedby going
over the gardentwo or three times. In the latter case,
the stake should be lowered before each succeeding
passoverthe garden,and passes should be madeacross
the length and width of the gardenalternately.Rocks
which are turned up shouldbe removedfrom the gar-
den area.

depth is desirable.Settingthe wheelsand stakeso that
the wheelsare about 2 inchesabovethe ground,while
the spaderis restingon the tines and stake,will allow
the machinetowork at cultivatingdepth. The throttle
shoufd be set f rom 1/3 to 2/3 for good cu ltivation at a
slow walking speed.
With standardtines,the working width of the machine
is 26 inches.Forcultivatin,this may be reducedto 14
inches by removingthe outer tines. The outer tine
bladescan be removedand reinstalledso all bladetips
a r e i n w a r d .T h i s w i l l r e d u c et i l l i n g w i d t h b y a p p r o x i -
mately 5 inchesand will make it easierto cultivate
closeto plantswithout endangeringroot structure.
 In layingout plant rows be sureto allow enoughwidth
to permit cultivation between the rows. In growing
crosscultivationand practicallyeliminatehand hoeing.
The Roto-Spaderhasmany i.rses other than tilling and
cultivatinga garden. One of theseis the preparationof
lawn area for seeding.The spaderwill preparea deep
seed bed which will be free of hard untilled spots,
allowing a better standof grassto grow. The spaderis
very usefulfor looseninghard soil for excavationwith
a shovel.No tedioushand pick work will be necessary.
Your Roto-Spadermay be usedfor mixing compost
i n t h e p i l e ,o r f o r m i x i n gi t w i t h t h e s o i l i n y o u r g a r d -
en. This should be done after the soil hasbeenbroken
to the full working depth. The compost should be
worked in to a depth of six to eight inches.This may
be done by working the lengthof the garden,and then
by making a separatepassacrossits width. The addi-
tion of decayedorganic matter will substantiallyin-
creasethe fertility of your.garden.For proper decay-
ing action, fertilizer should be appliedand worked in
with the mulch materials.The breaking up of the
leavesand straw and the mixing of it with the top sev-
e r a li n c h e s o fs o i l c a u s e s t hseo i l t o h o l d m o i s t u r el o n g -
er and allows proper aeration of the plant rood sys-
tem. This also retards the growth of weeds.

Clean air cleanerand re-oil element every 25 hours
undernormalconditions.Cleaneveryfew hours under
extremelydusty conditions.

of the wheel adjustmentyoke and the wheelssetting
on a 2 x 4 or a suitableprop approximately 1-112"
thick, removethe pipe plug at the front of the trans-
mission.When the pipe plug is removedthe lubricant
should be levelwith the bottom of the pipe plug hole.

lf the spaderis not to be usedfor a while, the Engine
Manual should be read for storageinstruction. The
tines, stake, transmission,and wheels should be
cleanedof all dirt. lt is very important that the unit be
stored in a level position to preventengineoil from

Engineson spadersto be stored over 30 days should
completely drained of fuel to prevent gum deposits
forming on essentialcarburetorparts,and tank.
(a) All fuel should be removed from fuel tank.

the 5/16 inch washerand locknut on them.
Turn the nuts until there is 1/16 inch clear-
ance betweenthe nut and the engine.Do not
tighten them yet.
(21 With the shift lever in the "N" neutral posi-
tion, adjust the turnbuckleon the control rod
u n t i l t h e e n g i n eb a s ei s a p p r o x i m a t e l y1 1 1 6 "
abovethe mountingsurfaceof the chassis.
