Quantitative Methods for Business I

STAT 1001, Section 01, CRN 4119 Fall 2018
Instructor: Dr. Marc Sobel
Office: 386 1810 Liacouras Walk
Phone: 215.204.5826
Class Hours: MWF 9:00AM-10:00AM
Office Hours: MWF 10:05 AM – 11:05 AM

Prerequisite: Sufficient score on the Math Placement exam or a C- or better in Math 0701.

Course Overview: Fundamentals of mathematics and Excel are necessary for a student to pursue their degree at the Fox School
of Business. Topics and illustrations are specifically directed to applications in business and economics throughout this course. The
overarching theme of this class is to solidify foundational quantitative and excel skills and use those skills to solve relevant business
applications.

Textbook: Custom Pearson Text (need to pick chapters from several books)
Custom Edition for Temple University (Pearson Custom Publishing, 2017)

Excel: Microsoft Excel (2016 for Windows, 2015 for Mac) will be used throughout this course. You will be asked to bring
your laptop to class to participate in classroom activities. (No calculator is required for this course, Excel will be
used as your “calculator”).

Course Objectives:
This course will enable you to understand and apply foundational quantitative techniques to business problems. We will apply these
techniques in decision making situations that require critical thinking. Specifically, by the end of the course, you should be able to
understand and apply knowledge of fractions, percentages, linear and nonlinear functions, and algebra to a variety of business
situations. In addition, you should be able to apply knowledge of basic functions in Microsoft Excel. In addition, you should develop
higher level skills that are applicable to myriad problems in business and in life, including: the ability to read and understand
information given in various formats (e.g., graphs, tables, figures, mathematical formulas, or in text), interpret and draw inferences
from quantitative information, solve business problems using quantitative methods, and estimate and check your answers for
reasonableness.

Method of Instruction: The course is designed to give you 24/7 on-demand access to content, assignments, and lectures. Being
successful in this course puts a great deal of responsibility in your hands. The course is comprised of two components: prerecorded
lectures designed and recorded specifically for your class, and live collaborative classes. It is critical that you stay on pace with the
material, watch the recorded lectures on-time and perform the suggested activities throughout the recordings, come prepared for
the live classes, do your homework until you understand the concepts and operations, understand to the point that you don’t need
any notes or triggers to help you successfully come to a correct solution.

Final Grade: will be based on the weighted average of

Quizzes 25%
Online Homework 10%
Exams (three) 40% (=13.33%*3)
Final Exam 25%

If a student does not complete a test, quiz, or assignment before the due date, then the student will receive a grade of zero for that
particular assessment. No make-up opportunity or extensions will be provided unless arrangements for a missed assessment are
made prior to the assessment date.

QUIZES will have a weight of 25%

Inclass Quizes : An Inclass quiz will be assigned during many Friday classes. Your quiz will be graded online.

Online Chapter Quizzes: The quizzes are on individual chapters and are check-in points before each exam. You will have only
one opportunity to submit your answers. Each quiz will be due about 72 hours after it is assigned (you’ll have three day’s).

Online Homework (10%): If you get a homework question incorrect, click on Similar Exercise to get a new problem.

Exams (40%): There will be three exams in this course. Each exam will be administered in class. There will be multiple versions
of each Exam dates: Friday Sep 28, Friday Oct 26, and Wednesday Nov 21

Final Exam (25%): A comprehensive common final exam will be administered on December from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in
selected classrooms. Every student taking Stat 1001 during the day on main campus takes the same final exam at the same time.
You may not take the final exam before or after the scheduled time.

This is a common final exam. Exam time will be announced later.

Grading Scale: 100 – 93 A 92 – 90 A–

89 – 87 B+ 86 – 83 B 82 – 80 B–
79 – 77 C+ 76 – 73 C 72 – 70 C–
69 – 67 D+ 66 – 63 D 62 – 60 D–
59 – 0 F
All final course grades will be rounded to the nearest whole number
(i.e. 69.5 would be rounded to a 70, but a 69.49 would be a 69).

Cheating and Plagiarism: are serious offenses and will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else's work
as your own (this someone may be another student, a tutor, a member of the faculty, or an author). Any student caught cheating or
committing plagiarism will be subject to disciplinary action. See handbook for details.
