THE ALTAR FLOWERS at Masham have been given in memory of Margaret Boshier.
REFLECTION The Jewish people weren’t expecting the kind of messiah Jesus turned out to
be. Jesus’ teaching about who he is in our Gospel reading offends even many of his disciples,
literally ‘scandalizing’ them by presenting a scandalion (a stumbling block). Some stumbling
blocks are good – God’s intervention in the world upsets and scandalizes our expectations.
How do we let God scandalize our ways of thinking? Some stumbling-blocks are bad – they
trip us up. To whom are we a stumbling-block that gets in the way of God’s scandalous saving
action in the person of Christ?
HUGH LE MESSURIER Hugh’s funeral will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Masham, on
Tuesday 4th September at 12 noon.
BIBLE READING NOTES Rudyard Kipling wrote “I keep six honest serving-men, / (They
taught me all I knew); / Their names are What and Why and When / And How and Where and
Who.” Those question words can serve Christians. Bible reading notes can help us apply these

RINGING REMEMBERS
When the bells rang out on the 11th November 1918 they announced the end of the most
catastrophic war the world had yet seen. At the time, bells were at the heart of the
community, marking events of great significance and communicating to people long before
modern technology connected us.
Many bell ringers joined the war effort, and many lost their lives. In total some 1400 bell
ringers lost their lives in the Great War.; a loss to them, their families and communities. You
are invited to become a bell ringer today in memory of the 1400 who lost their lives. Further

anyone interested is invited to Masham bell ringing Thursday practices between 7.00 and 9.00

VISIT TO ST. PAUL’S MANINGHAM, BRADFORD Recently St. Mary’s, Masham hosted a
visit from a group from St Paul's Church in Manningham, Bradford to Masham. A group came
up for a BBQ and riverside walk, a mix of Christians and Muslims involved in the church
community. There is an opportunity for a return fixture: St Paul's are holding an Eid party on
Monday 3rd September. We would aim to get there around 11am and have a tour of the parish,
then a party 1-3pm. David and I are keen to develop this twinning of rather different churches
within the same diocese and so would like to give the opportunity for people from all our
parishes to come along. We intend a car pooling - David and I have 3 seats apiece available but
I hope other cars and drivers will also volunteer. Anyone interested please contact Nick

to make the most of living in such a large and diverse diocese and build links with another

NORTHALLERTON MALE VOICE CHOIR present a charity concert at St. Nicholas’
Church. West Tanfield, on Friday 5th October at 7.30 p.m. in aid of the Bowling Club and
church funds. Tickets cost £10 to include light refreshments.
EPHESIANS 6: 10-20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armour of
God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not
against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against
the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to
withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and
fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As
shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace.
With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the
flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God.
Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and
always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a
message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for
which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.
JOHN 6: 56-69
Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living
Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of
me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate,
and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’ He said these things
while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.
When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This teaching is difficult; who can accept
it?’ But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them,
‘Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where
he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have
spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe.’ For
Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that
would betray him. And he said, ‘For this reason I have told you that no one can come to
me unless it is granted by the Father.’
Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So
Jesus asked the twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord,
to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and
know that you are the Holy One of God.’
