Guide
Using
New
AVTS
4.X
with
SMRT/MPRT
Units
In
this
guide,
we'll
outline
the
information
you'll
need
in
order
to
quickly
get
started
using
AVTS
4.X
software
with
your
SMRT
or
MPRT
Relay
Test
Systems.
For
experienced
AVTS
users
this
guide
will
also
describe
many
of
the
new
features
in
AVTS
4.X.
1. With
the
test
set
off
and
the
PC
off,
connect
the
Ethernet
port
of
the
PC
to
the
PC
IN
port
on
the
SMRT,
or
the
LAN
1
port
(for
MPRT
units
with
Dual
Ethernet
ports),
or
to
the
single
Ethernet
port
on
the
older
style
MPRT
relay
test
system.
2. Turn
on
the
relay
test
system.
Wait
until
the
unit
has
completed
the
power
up
and
self
check
sequence.
On
new
units,
or
older
MPRT
units
that
have
the
latest
version
of
firmware,
when
the
power
up
sequence
is
completed
the
binary
output
contacts
will
open
and
close
several
times,
which
causes
the
binary
output
LED’s
to
flash
on
and
off.
3. Turn
on
your
PC.
If
your
PC
is
setup
to
automatically
acquire
an
IP
address
from
a
network,
during
the
power
up
sequence
it
will
automatically
acquire
the
IP
address
of
the
relay
test
system.
Note
that
your
Local
Area
(Network)
Connection
will
indicate
that
it
has
“Limited
or
no
connectivity”.
This
means
that
it
has
found
the
test
system,
and
you
are
now
ready
to
set
up
the
AVTS
software
to
communicate
with
the
test
system.
In
AVTS
Help
are
detailed
instructions
on
how
to
set
the
MPRT
Ethernet
IP
address
if
the
IP
address
is
already
known.
MPRT/AVTS
users
are
already
familiar
with
this
procedure.
However,
with
the
addition
of
the
new
SMRT
test
systems,
and
new
firmware
for
the
MPRT
units,
the
new
AVTS
4.X
software
has
automated
IP
addressing
so
that
prior
knowledge
of
the
unit
IP
address
is
not
required.
1. With
both
the
test
system
and
the
PC
on,
start
the
AVTS
software.
Once
the
AVTS
software
is
up
and
running,
click
on
Tools
on
the
AVTS
Tool
Bar.
Then
click
on
Options,
and
then
Devices.
The
user
will
then
see
the
Devices
Screen.
Figure 1 New AVTS Options Setting Screen New AVTS Devices Screen
Note
that
the
unit’s
selection
window
has
both
SMRT
and
MPRT
units
shown.
Both
test
systems
use
similar
command
sets
and
have
Ethernet
communication
ports.
Test
modules
created
for
MPRT
should
work
with
the
SMRT
as
well
(depending
on
the
SMRT
options).
For
previous
version
of
AVTS
users
note
that
there
is
only
the
one
Simulate
Devices
check
button
now.
3
2. In
order
to
initiate
communications
with
either
the
SMRT
or
the
MPRT,
make
sure
to
un-‐check
the
Simulate
Device
button.
You
can
turn
the
Simulate
Device
back
on
from
the
AVTS
Main
Tool
Bar
without
having
to
return
to
the
Devices
setting
screen,
see
the
description
of
the
SIM
button
later
in
this
guide
under
New
Features.
3. Enter
the
number
of
Voltage
and
Current
channels,
along
with
the
number
of
digital
binary
inputs
and
outputs
in
the
test
system.
Note,
since
both
MPRT
and
SMRT
have
an
optional
number
of
Voltage
/Current
generators
(and
binary
inputs
and
outputs
for
the
SMRT
unit)
the
software
needs
to
know
the
number
of
channels
present
in
the
test
system
to
be
addressed.
4. Press
the
Auto
Discover
IP
button.
After
several
seconds
the
Assign
Test
Set
by
IP
address
window
will
appear.
If
not,
a
message
will
appear
indicating
that
a
firewall
is
blocking
the
exchange
of
information
through
the
Ethernet
port
between
the
PC
and
the
test
system.
Note:
If
the
PC
has
a
firewall
turned
on,
or
has
a
VPN
Check
Point,
it
may
not
allow
the
PC
to
automatically
acquire
the
relay
test
set
IP
address.
If
this
is
the
situation
for
your
PC,
contact
your
IT
department
for
instructions
to
turn
off
the
firewall.

AVTS
4.X
New
Features
AVTS
4.X
is
the
latest
release
of
Advanced
Visual
Test
Software
from
Megger
for
automated
relay
testing
using
Megger
Models
Pulsar,
MPRT
and
SMRT
test
systems.
As
advanced
technology
drives
the
protective
relay
industry
towards
the
Smart
Grid,
Megger
continues
to
develop
the
advanced
hardware
and
software
tools
needed
to
test
these
new
technologies.
Many
of
the
new
features
in
AVTS
4.X
are
subject
to
the
control
and
operation
of
the
new
SMRT
relay
test
systems
from
Megger.
However,
there
are
many
new
features
that
also
apply
to
the
older
MPRT
test
system
that
extend
its
operational
life
and
capabilities.
The
following
is
a
list
of
all
the
new
features,
additions,
and
improvements
to
AVTS
software.
Labels
show
up
in
the
Dynamic
Control
Capture
screen,
and
also
show
in
the
displayed
results
of
the
test
report.
Previous
labels
were
limited
to
DI#
(Digital
Input#),
and
DO#
(Digital
Output#).
Users
can
now
use
up
to
5
alpha-‐numeric
character
names
like
Trip,
or
52a,
etc.
5
• AVTS
will
remember
user-‐specified
window
pane
sizes
between
the
Workspace
pane
and
the
Workbook
pane.
This
allows
users
to
widen
the
Workspace
pane
to
display
the
Devices,
Relays,
Tests
and
MPRT
tabs.
From
these
tabs
the
user
selects
to
open
the
items
from
the
list
trees
in
each
tab.
By
remembering
the
pane
size
the
user
saves
time
with
not
having
to
resize
every
time
the
software
is
opened.
In
addition,
AVTS
also
saves
last
visited
Tab
for
the
Options
screen.
Saving
the
last
visited
Tab
in
the
Options
Screen
saves
the
user
time
when
having
to
select
the
most
used
Devices
Tab.
• Added
"SMRT"
to
the
equipment
selection
window
in
the
Devices
screen,
now
shows
"SMRT/MPRT".
• Added
Ethernet
auto-‐detect
for
SMRT
/
MPRT
and
display
in
AVTS,
see
above
detailed
description
under
Auto-‐Discover
IP
Address.
• Provided
communication
support
for
the
SMRT
via
Ethernet
and
USB.
• Add
support
for
variable
voltage
battery
simulator
in
SMRT.
The
new
SMRT
with
the
P
option
has
a
powerful
100
Watt
(4
Amps
Max)
battery
simulator,
which
the
user
can
specify
any
output
voltage
from
5
to
250
Volts
DC.
The
MPRT
has
fixed
DC
voltage
outputs
of
24,
48,
125
and
250
Volts.
• Added
new
waveforms
capture
streaming
(from
SMRT
units
only).
Reduces
wait
time
when
using
the
Recorder
Capture
feature
in
the
Dynamic
Control.
Recorder
Capture
is
a
very
useful
tool
when
doing
dynamic
multi-‐state
tests
providing
waveform
capture
of
output
voltages
and
currents,
as
well
as
showing
the
Sequence
of
Event
timing
on
the
binary
inputs
and
outputs.
• Added
a
wait
"timeout"
to
the
wait
any/wait
all
commands
(for
SMRT
only).
• Non-‐Empty
Test
groups
can
now
be
deleted.
AVTS
will
prompt
with
a
warning
that
the
test
group
is
not
empty,
and
if
the
user
confirms,
the
test
group
and
its
contents
will
be
deleted.
6
• Multiple
tests
within
a
single
test
group
can
now
be
selected
and
deleted
at
once.
Multiple
selections
can
be
done
using
C) Shift+Arrow keys.
• Deletion
can
be
done
using
the
right
click
menu
-‐>
delete
option,
Edit-‐>delete
on
the
menu
bar,
or
by
pressing
the
DEL
key
on
the
keyboard.
• Added
new
feature
to
find
specific
relay
settings
using
either
the
setting
nomenclature
or
a
descriptive
name
in
the
relay
setting
screen.
With
new
microprocessor
based
relays
having
hundreds
of
settings
sometimes
it
is
hard
to
find
a
setting
to
visually
verify
or
change
a
specific
setting.
See
the
following
example
for
an
SEL
501
relay.
To
use
the
Find
feature,
with
the
relay
test
file
open,
click
on
the
Setting
screen,
on
the
tool
bar
click
on
Edit,
then
Find,
or
press
Alt
and
F
keys
as
a
shortcut.
Inside
the
Find
dialog
box,
enter
the
name
of
the
setting
you
desire
and
then
click
on
Find
Next.
The
find
is
not
Case
sensitive
unless
you
check
the
Match
case
button.
When
it
finds
the
setting
it
will
be
highlighted.
If
you
do
not
know
the
actual
manufacturers
nomenclature
for
the
setting,
enter
in
a
description.
For
the
above
example,
if
you
entered
Neg-‐Seq
Time-‐Overcurrent
it
would
highlight
the
first
setting
it
found
with
those
attributes.
From
there
the
user
can
easily
navigate
to
the
desired
setting
value.
