Lesson Title: Introduction to Functions Grade: 8

Learning Target: By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
 Identify and define a function
 Translate data from a table to a graph and its corresponding function
 Create a function
 Generate the graph of functions

Academic Language: Function, input, output, graph, x-axis, y-axis

Students’ Needs: Students should have a solid foundation with equations and inequalities. They are not
expected to know a lot about the topic of functions.

English Language Learners Special Needs (can be a

group such as “struggling
readers” or individuals)
This lesson activity can be Students are not required to
translated to accommodate read much for this
and language barrier assignment and the video
will provide an alternative
source for students with
IEPs.
Materials:
Student: Internet access (if student does not have any then it will be provided), textbook
Teacher: Laptop, overhead projector,

Language Function:
Examine functions and changes that affect them.
Experiment with different graphs and the changes correlating to them.
Describe the graph that you created.

Lesson Plan
Before: Students will begin the lesson with bell ringer questions on the board that they will discuses
with someone around them
1. What is a function
2. What do you know about the slope of a line
3. How do you graph a line
Once class begins we will discuss informally as a whole class what they did in small groups.

During: After this introduction the class will be separated into quads and with in that they will be split
into pairs. Then we will begin the Desmos activity. All students will have their own laptop and submit
their own work. The pairs can have the same answers but it is encouraged to see some different
functions. Each quad should have at least 2 functions. The slides will be worked through at the pace of
the students after the video on the second slide is shown to the class.

After: Following completion of the Desmos activity we will look at some of the functions chosen and
examine the different graphs. The students are free to ask any questions at this time. The class will
participate in a group discussion to tie off any loose ends

Assessment: The student’s work on Desmos will be checked for effort and I will be observing the
activity as informal assessment.
