Abstract- This research descriptive with a quantitative approach which aims to determine the extent of the comfort
level of the UNP Library space based on student perceptions. The population in this study amounted to 549 students,
which was obtained from the average number of visitors per day in the semester period July-December 2017/2018.
The number of samples in this study was 232 students obtained from the Slovin formula with an error level of 5%,
and sampling techniques using Accidental sampling. The research instrument used was a questionnaire
(questionnaire) using a Likert scale consisting of five answer choices. The number of statements on the
questionnaire is 44 items. Data analysis techniques using descriptive percentage and using a Likert scale to give a
score for each comfort statement. The results of this study indicate that student perceptions of the comfort of
Padang State University Library space are still not comfortable. This is shown by the average score of the six
indicators that there are only two indicators that fall into the comfortable criteria of lighting (3.49) and accessibility
(3.43), while for the airplane indicator (2.58), color (3 , 21), hints / marks (3.27), as well as security and safety
(3.28), are still not included in the criteria of comfort.

II. LITERATURE RIVIEW

A. Library
The library is an information service provider to
the community in the form of library materials for
educational, research, science and technology
purposes and cultural development. The library
material in question is all forms of written, printed
and recorded works such as manuscripts, books,
periodicals, newspapers, brochures, maps, films,
photographs, tape and others [5]. While the College
library is an integral part of education, research and
community service activities and serves as a center
for learning resources to support the achievement of
educational goals based in universities [2]. The
purpose of the college library is [2]:
1) Providing library materials and information
access for visitors for the sake of education,
research and community service.
2) Develop, organize and utilize collections.
3) Improve user information literacy
4) Utilizing information and communication
technology.
5) Preserving library materials, both contents and
media.
B. Library Space
Library space arrangement is a facility
arrangement in a room or library building that has
been planned in such a way, with the aim of
obtaining a smooth and comfortable feeling for
visitors. Here are some aspects related to library
layout [3]:
1) Lighting
Lighting is one of the most important
elements in creating a comfortable atmosphere in
a space. Adequate lighting will greatly support
activities in the library. The dark atmosphere due
to lack of lighting in the library room will have
an impact such as fear, sense of creep and feeling
unclear. Setting the lighting conditions in a
library is as follows [2]:

Library space management should be as good
as possible in good air condition, so as to provide
comfort for the user. Good air condition is highly
expected in most libraries. A good level of air

3) Coloring
The use of color in the library must provide
a pleasant feeling for the user. For this reason,
various considerations are needed in choosing
and using colors in the library room. We
recommend avoiding the use of dark colors for
walls, floors and plasterboard, because dark
colors will create a narrow impression on a
room. [3]. Following are the consideration of
color selection in the library [3]:
a) The color chosen must be in accordance
with the soul of the library user
b) Library space can use neutral colors such as
white and cream, and natural colors of wood
that are bright enough to be used in some
space or furniture.
c) Library space can use more than one color
combined to color various parts of the
library
d) The colors that need to be avoided are
colors that are too bright and colors that are
too dark.
e) In a large room, colors can be used to mark
different parts of the library

4) Instruction/Symbol
Instructions or symbol are elements that need
to be planned properly in order to facilitate users
in using the library. Instructions and signs on the
library must be designed to be easily seen by
users, provide information needed by users and
support the overall atmosphere of the room.
Types of instructions and signs that need to
be provided based on the Spatial Planning and
Library Perbot [3]:
a) Library Identity
b) Identity Types of Library Services
c) Instructions on Collection
d) Other information relating to space

The following is the principle of accessibility
that needs to be considered in the library based
on the 2011 Spatial Planning and Public Library

a) Library space must be easily accessible to
users.
b) The height of the collection storage rack
must be adjusted, so that it is easy to reach
by the user.
c) The instructions in the room must be easily
visible.
d) Layout of library furniture should not make
it difficult for the user to move..
5) Security and Safety
To ensure security and safety in the library
room, here are some things that need to be
considered in library spatial planning [3]:
a) All activities taking place in the library must
be supervised by the library staff. For that
there is no hidden library section.
b) The library room must be properly locked
c) We recommend that there is only one
entrance and exit, so that it is easier to
monitor it. The use of sensor technology to
control can be applied to libraries that are
able to provide.
d) All furniture in the library must be in good
condition, sturdy and not easy to override
visitors.
e) The entrance and stair area must be bright
and not slippery and there is no difference in
the height of the floor which is not normal
which causes the user to fall.
f) Need to consider access to rescue users at the
time of fire. Access to rescue must be clear.

C. Comfort
Comfort is everything that shows the
harmonious use of space, both in terms of shape,
texture, color, aroma, sound, sound, light or other
[6]. Comfort can also be interpreted as enjoyment or
human satisfaction in carrying out its activities [6]

Perception is an experience experienced by a
person about objects, events, or relationships
obtained by inferring information and interpreting
messages [7]. Perception is also said to be a
cognitive process that is experienced by everyone in
understanding information about the environment,
both through vision, hearing, appreciation, feeling,
and smell. [8]
III. RESEARCH METHODS
This type of research is descriptive research
using a quantitative approach. In this study, will find
out the comfort level of Padang State University
Library space based on student perceptions.
This research was conducted at the Padang State
University Library in March 2018. The population
in this study was obtained from statistical data on
the average number of visitors per day during the
July-December 2017 semester, which totaled 549
people. The sampling technique used is Accidental
sampling, the sample size in this research is 232
people based on the Slovin formula. Research data
is primary data obtained directly from respondents
using a questionnaire.
The research questionnaire was conducted on 30
respondents who were students of the UNP Library
visitors. Questionnaire validity test was carried out
as many as two rounds of 47 statement items and
produced 44 valid and reliable statement items,
because all Pearson Correlation values were greater
than rtable ie 0.361 (n = 30) and obtained
Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.942.
The data analysis technique used is to calculate
the frequency of each alternative answer from the
respondent. Next, the percentage of each statement
is calculated using the following formula [9].
