NEGLIGIBLE MAINTENANCE
Aside from infrequent changes of the ram rubbers, there
is virtually nothing to wear in the ram assemblies, and
the operating cylinders are equally trouble-free. All work-

BLOWOUT PREVENTERS

TYPE 60 RAM ASSEMBLIES
All Shaffer Blowout Preventers-Type LWS, Type B and Type E-use esse
tially the same design of Ram Assembly-the Shaffer Type 60 Ram Assemb:
(Note: The Shaffer Mechanical Control Gate requires only a slight modificati<
in the Ram Holder-easily made in the field with units already in service-to al
use the Type 60 Ram Blocks and Ram Rubbers).
Each Type 60 Ram Assembly consists of three major parts-a pair of Ra
Block Holders, a pair of Ram Blocks and a pair of Ram Rubbers.
RAM BLOCK HOLDERS
The alloy steel Ram Block Holders, as the name implies, surround the Ra
Blocks and hold both the Ram Blocks and Ram Rubbers in place so that they c:
be closed and opened by the piston rod ram shaft which fits into a slot cut in
the back of each Holder. The Ram Blocks are held in the Holders by retracth
fig. 36 screws (two screws for each Ram Block), and are so mounted that each Ra
7 ype 60 Self-Centering Ram Assembly Com- Block is permitted a slight rotary movement to assure positive alignment of t:
plete with Rams for closing around pipe ram faces for a perfect seal.
RAM BLOCKS
The alloy steel Ram Blocks fit within the Ram Block Holders and are surround•
by the Ram Rubbers. They are of ample thickness to withstand more than the f1
rated pressure of the Preventers.
RAM RUBBERS
The Ram Rubbers (Fig. 38) surround the Ram Blocks and are made of a tow
specially-compounded rubber that permits them to extrude slightly under cot
pression to insure a pressure-tight seal. The Type 60 Rams are the latest Shaff
advancement in ram design and provide important advantages ...
1. The Type 60 Ram Rubbers are anchored to the Ram Blocks from the back
each Block by retaining screws "A" (Fig. 39) that fit into threaded trunnion nu
"B" embedded in the Ram Rubbers. Thus, the entire face of the Rubber, where
Fig. 37 seals around the pipe as well as against the face of the opposite Ram, is soli

tough rubber without any holes or exposed metal surfaces to reduce the effectiv
for closing off open hole ness of the seal.
2. As the Type 60 Rams close around the pipe (or against each other) steel plat
"C" (Fig. 40), bonded into the face of each Type 60 Ram Rubber act as pisto:
to force reserve rubber into the sealing area. Thus, the full resiliency of ti
specially-compounded rubber is utilized to maintain the leak-tight seal across ti
face of the Rams. This added reserve of rubber-with extrusion fully controlled l
the steel plates-assures tighter sealing, even under prolonged pressure shut-oft
3. The double bands "D" (Fig. 40) of Ram Rubber around the outer periphery
each Ram Block reduce sealing resistance and permit a tighter seal with less clo
ing force. These double bands also assist the sealing effectiveness should the ope
ating pressure be reduced.
4. By simply installing the proper size of Type 60 Ram Rubbers, most Type 1
Ram Blocks can be used for sealing around several pipe sizes (as shown on pa1
4301), thus eliminating need for purchasing separate Ram Blocks for each pipe si'
For example, only four Ram Block sizes are required for handling nine popul:
sizes of Ram Rubbers ... 2%" and 2'%"-4" and 4¥i"-5", 5'\1i" and 5o/ia"-a1
6" and 7".
OFFSET RAMS
In order to inovide complete control when making dual completions, Shaff
Offset Rams can be furnished. The Shaffer Type AD Dual Tubing Hangers cl
signed to support two production strings are described in the Well Head sectio

SELF-CENTERING FEATURE
All Shaffer Ram Assemblies used for closing c
around pipe are of self-centering design (see Fi
36) with angular guides protruding alternate
top and bottom as shown. As the rams mo"
toward their closed position, these guides engai
the drill pipe and center it within the bore of tl
ram. Then, as the rams continue closing,, ti
guides telescope into recesses provided in the o
posite mm blocks, thus permitting the faces
the ram blocks to seal tightly together.
This self-centering feature is important, for

The salient feature is the Stripper Rubber (Fig. 62) which seals automatically
around varying diameters and shapes in the drill string. The higher the well pres-
sure, the tighter the seal. And not only does the Stripper Rubber seal around the
drill i1ipe, but when using a kelly of suitable size in relation to the size of the drill
pipe, a perfect seal is also maintained around the kelly. The Stripper Rubber
maintains a constant seal, expanding and contracting to pass the drill pipe-

whether flush joint, upset or coupled-as well as sealing off the varying diameters
of tool joints, subs and drill collars as they pass through the unit. A patented
2xpanding Eteel barrier composed of steel latches locked to the inside top encl of
the Shipper prevents extrusion of the Rubber when subjected to high pressures
Jr abnormal expansion.
The ideal installation for modern pressure control operations is the Shaffer
:::ombination Rotating Blowout Preventer and Stripper used with the Shaffer
Hydraulic Double Blowout Preventer.
Such an installation provides complete protection against pressure emergencies
,vhether drilling the well with mud control or under pressure. It permits the
iperator to drill under pressure without substituting any special drilling equip- Fig. 62

LUBRICATION OF SEALS
The Pressure Lubricator shown in Fig. 63 has been designed to provide adequate lubri-
cation for the rotating sleeve seals of the Shaffer Combination Rotating Blowout Prevent-
er and Stripper.
The lubricator is operated by compressed air which is usually available at most drilling
rigs. The air actuates a small piston which in turn raises and forces the lubricant through
a hose connected to a grease fitting located in the stationary housing and then through a
port to the seals.
The use of the Pressure Lubricator assures continuous lubrication and is a self-
cont.ainecl unit made to be used on a 50 lb. lubricant pail (not supplied) by simply insert-
ing the suction pipe into the lubricant. The quantity of lubricant used can be regulated by
varying the piston speed through the air supply.
Fig. 63
As the lubricator is fully automatic and requires little attention, the lubrication of the
Pressure
Lu[)ricator seals is clone with no effort and with complete effectiveness.

FEATURES OF THE SHAFFER COMBINATION ROTATING BLOWOUT PREVENTER AND STRIPPER
The Shaffer Combination Rotating Blowout Preventer An important feature in the use of this Preventer is

without this safety equipment. And, since any increase
in well pressure seals the rubber more securely against DRILLING WITH AIR OR GAS
the kelly or drill pipe, protection is provided against
pressure emergencies without manual operation of any Whether cuttings are blown up around the annulus 01
kind. circulation is reversed, the Preventer provides a sealing
unit across the annulus and around the
drill string. Returning air or gas is di-
rected out of the well through a flanged
outlet below the sealing point and to 2
conductor pipe which leads to a disposal
area. The packing element rotates with
the string and provides effective packofl
during drilling operations.
When casing is landed, the rotating as-
sembly may be replaced with the prope1
size of Casing Stripper (described on op.
posite page). This allows the operator tc
perform all necessary operations to com
plete the casing landing job without re

As there is no mud column to contro

MODEL KS HEADS
Model KS Heads (Fig. 76 and Fig. 77) are designed for
installations where maximum working pressures do not
exceed 2000 PSI. The packing unit seats directly upon the
slips as shown in Fig. 76. Although the load induced by the
well pressure is transferred to the slips, this is a minor
factor in low pressure ranges and is not detrimental.
MODEL KD HEADS
The Model KD Heads (Fig. 78 and Fig. 79) should be
Fig. 76 used on those installations where the working pressures

To relieve the load induced by the well pressure from
being transferred to the slips the packing unit seats on a
beveled steel snap ring supported in a recess in the bore
of the head as shown in Fig. 78. This construction greatly
reduces the collapsing load on the casing.

RIGID SUPPORT
The "Feed-Through" lVIandrel itself is held firmly in
place by a threaded section that screws into the Hanger
-which, in turn, is held firmly in place in the wellhead
by a conventional lock-screw design so that no internal
well pressures can move the lVIandrel or cause destruc-
tive "working" of the sealed-off areas. Also, no mechani-
cal movement to which the outside of the Hanger may
be subjected can affect the pressure-tight seal.

POSITIVE CHOKE
TYPE 34
Many operators install Shaffer Type 34 Adjustable Chokes and use the adjustable
feature to determine the correct orifice diameter for a fixed orifice choke. The Type
34 Positive Choke features a bolted blanking-off cap which is substituted for the
yoke assembly of the Type 34 Adjustable Choke. The venturi insert is bored to the
corresponding insert of the fixed orifice choke. Available in sizes 2" through 6", \Vith

TYPE 65
The Type 65 Positive Choke is similar to the Type 34 Positive Choke
above, but features a clamp yoke connection to permit quick choke
changes. This design can also be readily converted to the adjustable type
by using a clamp yoke assembly. The tapered chokes fit within the tapered
bore of the venturi insert and are easily removed for replacement. The
Type 65 is available in sizes 2" through 6", with flanged end connections

JARS AUTOMATICALLY
To use for jarring, it is only necessary to slack off weight of
approximately 2000 feet of drill pipe onto the tool, thus releas-
ing the tripping mechanism and striking a sharp downward
blow. Raising the string automatically re-sets the tool for an-
other blow, and blows can be struck as fast as the pipe can be
raised and lowered. The tool provides an instant means for
jarring through bridges, tight spots or key seats . . . jarring
loose when drill pipe freezes . . . and pulling off bottom with a
balled up bit.

Subsidiary of The Rucker Company -
The Shaffer-Waggener Bumper Safety Joint is so designed that the two sections
of the tool-the mandrel and the barrel-triple-lock in true alignment at three widely
spaced points to provide maximum stabilization of the complete tool.
As shown in Fig. 157 the upper point of stabilization is at "A" where (1) the
taper of the mandrel and barrel centralizes the mandrel within the barrel-and (2)
the helically-cut angle on the face of the taper causes the mandrel to rotate slightly
with respect to the barrel, wedging the locking keys at "B" into tight engagement
to prevent any rotational movement between barrel and mandrel.
The close hardened-and-ground fit at "C" between the stabilizing shoulder on the
mandrel and the sleeve of the barrel provides a third point of stabilization near the
bottom of the tool to prevent any "rocking" action between barrel and mandrel.
Since these three stabilizing points are spaced well apart, ample leverage is pro-
vided for holding the tool in precise alignment and rotational concentricity during
high speed or rough drilling operations.
To further assure close concentricity tolerance, each individual Shaffer-Waggener
Bumper Safety Joint is carefully tested for concentricity before shipment. Tests are
nade on specially designed equipment which parallels the conditions encountered in
high speed, deep well drilling operations, and concentricity tolerance is held to closer Fig. 157
.imits than those of other elements in the drill string. Parts for Shaffer-Waggener Bumper

CONSTRUCTION
In addition to replacing separate jars and safety joints, this combined tool i
shorter than either one of these single-purpose tools usually employed. Unlike man~
types of jars, no special care is necessary when making it up in the string and
clue to its ease of handling, it can be made up on the derrick floor or on the pip,
rack with a saving in time up to one-half hour.
High tensile strength alloy steels are used throughout and all parts are hea
treated to assure maximum strength. Circulation can be maintained through th
entire length of the Jar Safety Joint and two-direction chevron packing provide
an effective seal against leakage from pressures encountered in either normal o
reverse circulation.
The Jar Safety Joint drives on three keys (C) and not thro1lgh threads. Th
strength of the three keys is greater than the strength of the drill pipe on whic:
the tool is run and thus allows full torque of any amount that may be exerte,
in either direction.

prevented by the stabilization features which can be seen in Fig. 159. The Spli
Knocker Head on the Mandrel (A) maintains a close concentricity tolerance wit
the Barrel and forms the upper point of stabilization. The close hardened-an(
ground fit between the Mandrel and Barrel (below the Drive Keys) where the "0
0 Rings are located provides the lower point of stabilization. These two widely space
points provide maximum stabilization at all times .
• OPERATION AS A JAR
Referring to Fig. 159, a straight pull on the string expands the Trip Spring ( 4
and releases it from the Trip Mandrel ( 5). The string of pipe, stretched by U
straight pull, lifts the Barrel (2) upward with a sudden movement and causes U
Split Knocker Head (B) on the inside of the Barrel to strike the Split Knoch
Head (A) on the :Mandrel with a powerful blow, as indicated in Fig. 158.
The amount of pull required to expand the Trip Spring is governed by the tensio
in the Disc Spring ( G) which tends to keep the Trip Spring closed. This trippin
action is particularly reliable because it does not depend on friction in any wa:
When the string is lowered after the blow is struck, the Disc Spring will force tl
Trip Spring clown until its top reaches the beveled shoulders in the Trip Mancln
The Trip Spring then contracts and locks the tool ready for the next blow, whic
can be delivered immediately. The jarring action is thus automatic with the raisir
and lowering of the string on which it is run and any number of blows of equ,
intensity can be struck. If blows of greater or less intensity are desired, the J;
can be pulled out of the well and an adjustment made.
ADJUSTING THE BLOW
The force of the hlow is controlled by the tension in the Disc: Spring (6) and any blow frorn
to 60 tons can be delivered by using the vroper Spa.cer (11) in the .Tal» The Shaffer Oil-Seal1
