Surface Texture / Form Deviation
Terms, surface texture parameters and indication on drawings

Foreword
Plant standard MBN 31 007 forms the basis for surface texture standards for the vehicle business of
Mercedes-Benz. It functions as liaison to the specified international standards and VDA recommen-
dations and defines internal surface texture parameters which are not described externally.

Plant standard MBN 31 007 consists of several parts. Table 1 of Section 4 indicates the different
parts of the plant standard.

Changes
In comparison with edition 2002-07, the following changes have been made:
− Representation of standard on new standard template; reduction of wording of preface; remain-
ing text added to Section 4
− Elimination of dated references of standards in Section 2 and Annex A with the exception of
standard MBN DIN ISO 1302
− Changeover of section allocation of DIN EN ISO 13565-1 and DIN EN ISO 13565-3 in Section 2
and Annex A

NOTE: No guarantee can be given in respect of this translation. In all cases the latest
German-language version of this Standard shall be taken as authoritative.

3 Abbreviations, Acronyms, Definitions, & Symbols

The definitions of VDA 2005 and VDA 2006 apply to this Standard.

4 General
Parameters and measuring conditions of international standards in the field of surface measurement tech-
nology could not be adopted unchanged. For automotive engineering, it was therefore felt necessary to
agree uniform modified specifications. The advanced and future-oriented approaches followed by the new
international standards have thus been integrated.

These changed circumstances have been specified for automotive engineering in two VDA Recommenda-
tions, VDA 2005 and VDA 2006.

VDA 2005 supersedes the International Standard DIN EN ISO 1302 with regard to indications of the sur-
face texture in CAD drawings.

VDA 2006 covers the modified specifications with regard to International Standards DIN EN ISO 3274,
DIN EN ISO 4287 and DIN EN ISO 4288. These International Standards are not valid in isolation and shall
only be used in combination with VDA 2006.

In addition, an evaluation method for the identification of surface textures has been defined.
It describes the dominant waviness on surfaces which are restricted in their function as a result of periodic
profiles. This method is described in VDA 2007.

Plant standard MBN 31 007 consists of several parts. Table 1 provides an overview of the different parts
of the plant standard.

5 Surface texture parameters; codes, parameters, selection and explanation

Surface texture parameters are described in VDA 2006 based on standards DIN EN ISO 4287 and DIN
EN ISO 42 88.
VDA 2006 corrects measurement and evaluation conditions which are not compatible with usual meas-
urement practice.

MBN 31007 restricts the variety of parameters by dividing them into two application areas which are rep-
resented in the form of tables.
Table 2 describes the parameters appropriate for technical product documentation.
Table 3 describes special parameters which are only allowed for auxiliary and special functions.

Note:
The most common surface texture parameter is " Rz ".
