1 Overview
In general, GSM/EDGE/UMTS system consists of Core Network (CN), Radio Network
Subsystem (GERAN/UTRAN) and Mobile Station/User Equipment (MS/UE).
GERAN/UTRAN includes 2 network elements, base station and BSC/RNC. The
conventional 2G/3G BTS connects to BSC/RNC or MS/UE via Abis/Iub or Um/Uu
interface respectively. The flowing figureErro! Fonte de referência não encontrada.

In the Erro! Fonte de referência não encontrada., GPRS/EDGE and UTRAN are two
separated radio networks. When ZTE 2G/3G dual-mode base station is introduced, the
2G/3G radio networks will be converged into one and this will decrease the network
construction cost greatly. The GSM/UMTS integrated network is shown in following
Figure.

The purpose of this document is to describe the MCPA based SDR Dual Mode
Enhanced Radio System Unit (RSU) – ZXSDR RSU60E, which adopts the unified
MicroTCA platform to support all kinds of wireless access technology including GSM,
UMTS, CDMA2000, and WiMAX. Also it supports the type of ZXSDR RSU60E for
GSM/UMTS dual mode.
Next descriptions are giving a general overview to the ZXSDR RSU60E for GSM/UMTS
dual mode.
2 Highlight Features
l It can flexibly support both GSM and UMTS with software configuration. For the
multi-mode configuration, RSU60E can support 4 GSM TRXs plus 1 UMTS carrier or
2 GSM TRXs plus 2 UMTS carriers.
l For GSM configuration, the typical power consumption is less than 200 W (6TRXs);
For UMTS configuration, the typical power consumption is less than 155 W (1
carrier); For GU dual mode configuration, the typical power consumption is less than
215 W (4 TRXs+1 carrier).
3 Functionality
RSU60E is the radio part of full function base station. The signal is transmitted/received
through RSU60E to base band processing unit for a further processing by CPRI interface.
l Co-cabinet can support transmit diversity, without adding antenna achieving same
receiving sensitivity;
l One RSU60E software fault for itself will not affect the running of BBU and other
RSU.

l Extract clock reference signal from baseband unit, provide clock for different
modules;
l Environment Detection;
l Provide 2 paths of baseband–RF interface and 4 paths of external alarm input, and a
serial port, a FE interface, a RS232 interface, and a AISG interface;
l Feedback forward power coupling signal to ADTR, and ADTR do forward power
inspection;
l Feedback backward power coupling signal to ADTR, and ADTR do backward power
(SWR) inspection;
l Transmit the access signal by the socket and finish the function of interface
conversion.
l Access following these signals from DTR board: Ethernet signal, LED indicator,
single board reset signal, jumper, button signal, digital ground, power, ground and
458 signal of electrically tuned antenna;
l Power, ground, and 485 signal of electrically tuned antenna, output to electrically
tuned antenna by socket; other signals are introduced to outside by test socket, to do
debug and use as indicative signal;
l Finish interference protection for indicators, reset signals, buttons, and jumpers.

Hardware System
Application layer consists of RFS (Radio Frequency Sub-system) and OAM (Operating
and Maintenance) sub-systems. Its main function contains software downloading,
configuration, management, system maintenance and measurement.
OSS (Operation Support Sub-system) is the support layer in this entire framework, which
is a hardware irrespective platform for running software and provides basic functions like
scheduling, timer, memory management, communication, sequencing control, monitoring,
alarming and logging.
BSP (Board Support Package) supports the information routing to the GSM, UMTS and
public parts in the application layer.
