Lab Equipment

For holding solutions


– Test tubes: for heating a small amount of a substance
– Beaker: for measuring, heating, mixing & pouring liquids
– Erlenmeyer flask: for measuring, heating, mixing & pouring
liquids, usually when a stopper is needed
– Graduated cylinder: for measuring and pouring liquids; not
for heating

For Heating
– Ring stand: platform that holds a Bunsen burner, the pole
holds test tube or ring clamps
– Bunsen burner: for heating contents in a lab Figure 1: Reading a graduated cylinder
– Utility clamp/test tube clamp: for holding a test tube on a
ring stand
– Iron ring/ring clamp: for holding a flask or beaker on a ring stand
– Crucible & cover: for heating chemicals to high temperatures
– Tongs: for holding a hot beaker
– Wire gauze: holds beakers or flasks over a Bunsen burner
– Pipestem triangle/clay triangle: supports a crucible in the ring clamp
– Watch glass: keeping liquid contents in a beaker from splattering

For handling chemicals


– Micropipets: transferring a small amount of a liquid
– Forceps/tweezers: for handling small objects
– Scoopula: transfers solids (eg. powders)

Other
– Evaporating dish: to evaporate extra fluid to make a more concentrated solution
– Funnel: used to pour liquids into containers with small openings
– Mortar & pestle: used to grind chemicals into powder
– Well plate: Mixing a small amount of chemicals together

– Wash bottle: used to rinse glasswears, such as test tubes and flasks
– Wire brush: for cleaning the inside of test tubes or graduated cylinders

– Safety goggles: protects eyes from flying object or chemical splashes


– Triple beam balance: for measuring mass
– Test tube rack: for holding multiple test tubes
