from corrosion.

BACKFILL
Anodes provided with backfill for soil applications

yields uniform environment and helps increasing
efficiency of the anodes. Separate backfill are used
for sacrificial and impressed current anodes.
Types:
Chemical backfill for sacrificial/galvanic anodes
Petcoke backfill for impressed current anodes
Chemical backfill for sacrificial anodes:
The chemical backfill used for galvanic

anodes consists of 75% gypsum(CaSO4),
20% bentonite clay, and 5% sodium sulfate.

CP POWER SUPPLY UNITS
External power supply is required in case of impressed current Cathodic protection system using inert
anodes. Commonly, impressed current Cathodic protection system uses transformer-rectifier unit which
runs on AC supply voltage. However, where AC supply voltage is not available, various alternatives are
considered viz., thermoelectric generators, solar panels / wind powered generators coupled with storage
batteries. Where AC power is economically available, transformer-rectifiers have clear economicand
operating advantages over other power sources.
Transformer Rectifier Units
For underground applications, impressed current cathodic protection system, a transformer rectifier unit
contains a step-down transformer, a means of adjusting the voltage, arectifier to change AC to DC, and
various controls and other componentsdepending on its usage. As a result of various advancements,
transformer rectifier units are provided with additional features viz., automatic operations, remote
monitoring and others.

CABLES
The electrical interconnection between anode and

cathode of the electrochemical cells are made by
suitably sized conductors. Copper and/or aluminium
conductors are commonly used. These conductors
should be provided with a dielectric insulation
andsheathing based on the service conditions and
application.

REFERENCE ELECTRODES
Reference electrodes, or half-cells, are

important devices that permitmeasuring
the potential of a metal surface exposed
to an electrolyte.Structure-to-soil
potentials are measured in reference to
an electrode.

Portable Reference Electrode:

site field measurements. These electrodes are

Permanent Reference Electrode:
Permanent reference electrodes are

consideration. The electrode is enclosed
on porous/hygroscopic material that
allows moisture retention. Permanent

with chemical backfill.
