ST. PAUL’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

16th Sunday of Pentecost September 9th & 12th, 2010

Theme of the Day

Through the “River” of His Word

God Gives Joy to His People

Welcome & Invocation:

In the name of the Father—who made the world for us to enjoy
In the name of the Son—who saved us that we may enjoy heaven
In the name of the Holy Spirit—who gives us joy in his word. Amen.

Opening Song
Thurs @ 6:30 p.m. & Sun @ 8 a.m Hymn 369 v1-2 Beautiful Savior
Sunday @ 10:30 a.m. Choir Shout to the Lord

1) The “River,” God’s Word,

Makes God’s People Glad
Psalm 46:1-7

1 God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam

and the mountains quake with their surging.

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;

God will help her at break of day.

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;

he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Song: Peace Like a River

Refrain: I’ve got peace like a river!
I’ve got peace like a river!
I’ve got peace like a river in my soul!
I’ve got peace like a river!
I’ve got peace like a river!
I’ve got peace like a river in my soul!
There’s a river that brings joy
To the city of our God,
To the sacramental house of the Most High.
In that city of God abides;
It will never be destroyed.
In the morning you will surely draw nigh.
Refrain

God’s our shelter and our strength

And our help in time of trouble;
Though the earth is shaken we will never fear,
Though the mountains tumble down
And the oceans roar and rage
And the hills are shaken by the noise they hear.
Refrain

2) Obstacles in the “River”

Ephesians 6:10-17
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full ar-

mor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against
the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual
forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of
God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your
ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with
the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteous-
ness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from
the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with
which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

Hymn 752 v1-3: In Christ Alone

Generated by Foxit PDF Creator © Foxit Software
http://www.foxitsoftware.com For evaluation only.

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! who took on flesh

Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay

Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

3) The “River” Guides Us

Psalm 119 selected verses

97 Oh, how I love your law!

I meditate on it all day long.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,

for I meditate on your statutes.

100 I have more understanding than the elders,

Generated by Foxit PDF Creator © Foxit Software
http://www.foxitsoftware.com For evaluation only.

for I obey your precepts.

103 How sweet are your words to my taste,

sweeter than honey to my mouth!

104 I gain understanding from your precepts;

therefore I hate every wrong path.

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet

and a light for my path.

Hymn 765 v1-2: Day by Day

Day by day, your mercies, Lord, attend me,

Bringing comfort to my anxious soul.
Day by day, the blessings, Lord, you send me
Draw me nearer to my heav’nly goal.
Love divine, beyond all mortal measure,
Brings to naught the burdens of my quest:
Savior, lead me to the home I treasure,
Where, at last, I’ll find eternal rest.

Children’s Meditation

Day by day, I know you will provide me,

Strength to serve and wisdom to obey;
I will seek your loving will to guide me
O’er the paths I struggle day by day.
I will fear no evil of the morrow;
I will trust in your enduring grace.
Savior, help me bear life’s pain and sorrow;
Till in glory I behold your face.

4) Joy in the “River”

Philippians 4:4-7

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evi-

dent to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the
peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your
minds in Christ Jesus.

Hymn 449 v1-3: Children of the Heavenly Father

Generated by Foxit PDF Creator © Foxit Software
http://www.foxitsoftware.com For evaluation only.

Children of the heav'nly Father

Safely in his bosom gather;
Nestling bird or star in heaven
Such a refuge ne'er was given.

God his own doth tend and nourish;

In his holy courts they flourish.
From all evil things he spares them;
In his mighty arms he bears them.

Neither life nor death shall ever

From the Lord his children sever;
Unto them his grace he showeth,
And their sorrows all he knoweth.

5) “Fishing” in the “River”

James 5:16b-20

16 The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did
not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens
gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
19 My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring

him back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will
save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

Hymn 562 v1-2: I Love to Tell the Story

I love to tell the story Of unseen things above,

Of Jesus and his glory, Of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story Because I know it's true;
It satisfies my longings As nothing else can do.
I love to tell the story; 'Twill be my theme in glory
To tell the old, old story Of Jesus and his love.

I love to tell the story, For those who know it best

Seem hungering and thirsting To hear it like the rest.
And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song,
'Twill be the old, old story That I have loved so long.
I love to tell the story; 'Twill be my theme in glory
To tell the old, old story Of Jesus and his love.

Offering

Prayer

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
Who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction
People sing “Amen. Amen. Amen.”

Hymn 369 v3-4: Beautiful Savior

Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight,

Bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer,
Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,

Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, Praise, adoration,
Now and forevermore be thine!

CHURCH PICNIC - Today @ 10:30 a.m.

Our annual Church Picnic is today at Rock River
Park in the beautiful pavilion. We will have
a worship service at 10:30 a.m. followed by a
pot-blessed meal. There will be games for children.
Members are asked to bring: a dish to pass, their
own table service, and a “white elephant gift” for
bingo. Some members may want to bring lawn
chairs. Come and praise God “who richly
provides us with everything for our enjoyment”
(1 Timothy 6:17).

WELCOME !
How wonderful to have this service out in God’s beautiful creation. We are so very
blessed to have our Beautiful Savior. In Him we have forgiveness. In Him we are
beautiful to God. Please stay and enjoy the wonderful food for the body which has
been prepared.

FALL SCHEDULE FOR SERVICES - Starts Today @ 8 & 10:30 a.m.

We have returned to our fall worship schedule AFTER the Labor Day weekend.
Our services for the fall and winter will be at 8 & 10:30 a.m., (instead of 8 and
10 a.m.).

BAPTISMS
On Thursday evening, Henry Finn Belzer, son of Mason Belzer and his wife,
Stephanie (nee Simdon) will be received into God’s kingdom through the sacrament
of Holy Baptism.
After the 8:00 a.m. service, Jackson Cameron Wakefield, son of Douglas Wake-
field and Amber Rue, will be received into God’s kingdom through the sacrament of
Holy Baptism. May Henry and Cameron remain children of God all the days of their
lives.

DEDICATION OF CHILDREN'S CENTER - Sunday, September 19th

The first time we use our Noah’s Ark Children's Center will be Sunday,
September 19th. On that day we will dedicate the Center and have an Open House.
We are working on decorating
the Children's Center with a
Noah's Ark theme. We are
thankful that God is providing
a place in our church facility
for ministry to children. We
have always been blessed
with the Lutheran Elementary
School, but we have never
had a place for children in the
church facility. This will be the
first time since the founding of our church in 1861—149 years ago—that we have an
area dedicated to Children’s Ministry in our church facility.

PLEASE NOTE - MISSION FESTIVAL IS ONE WEEK EARLY THIS YEAR

This year our Mission Festival will NOT be on the 1st Sunday in October. Since we
are unable to have our guest preacher with us that day, we are “moving up” our Mis-
sion Festival ONE WEEK to Sunday, September 26th. To use the special offering
envelope in the box of envelopes, you will have to “LOOK AHEAD” one week and
“pull it out” so that you can use it on the day of our Mission Festival—Sunday, Sep-
tember 26th.

AFTER-SCHOOL CARE
St. Paul’s Lutheran School is now offering before and after school care in the
Noah’s Ark Children’s Center. Please contact our school office (563-5349) if you
wish to use this service for you child. The hours before school are: 6:30 -7:30 a.m..
The after-school hours are: 3:00 –6:00 p.m.

SPONSOR ANOTHER MARATHON FOR THE ESCAPE? -- Sept. 19th

Next Sunday Pastor Scharrer will run the
Fox Cities Marathon. Think we can surpass the
$1,940 which was given last year? If you’d like to
sponsor Pastor Scharrer in this 26.2 mile race, half
of the proceeds will go towards the Escape
expansion & remodeling and the other half for the
Escape Foundation. In the past, quite a number
have really encouraged Pastor Scharrer by
pledging $1 per mile and $2 per mile if he finishes.
(You don’t know how so very encouraging that is!)
J) But, whatever the amount may be, that is fine.
Your prayers are always greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much for your gifts and/or your prayers.
Two years ago, on the day of this
marathon, Sept. 21, 2008, Pastor Bitter (served
here at St. Paul’s 1965-1992), completed his
“marathon of life.” Through faith in Jesus, he
entered the “race of heaven” which never ends.
Last year, Charley Scharrer (son of Al and Molly)
was born on the same day as this marathon, Sept. 20, 2009. Thus, Pastor
Scharrer is running this marathon, Sept. 19th, in Pastor Bitter’s memory and in
celebration of Charley’s birth.
