Mr. William Kolibas

Director, Facilities
Brick Township Schools
346 Chambers Bridge Road
Brick, NJ 08724

Dear Mr. Kolibas,

This report summarizes the results of the August 28 and August 31, 2018 mold sampling
conducted at the Lake Riviera Middle School. This sampling was conducted following discovery
of mold-like discoloration on some desk surfaces in several classrooms within the 100 wing on
or around August 27, 2018. Upon discovery, Brick Schools’ custodial staff cleaned surfaces
using a disinfectant solution in accordance with minor mold cleaning training previously
received. Dehumidifiers and HEPA filtered air scrubbers were installed by Insurance Restoration
Specialists, Inc, in the impacted classrooms as well as classrooms in representative areas
throughout the school as a precaution.

Initial air sampling was conducted in the impacted classrooms and in representative areas
throughout the school on August 28, 2018. Samples were hand-delivered to an AIHA Accredited
Environmental Microbiology Laboratory for spore trap mold analysis.

Background on Mold Spores in Normal Indoor and Outdoor Air

Mold spores are present in normal outdoor and indoor air. Outdoor air sources of mold spores
include molds that feed on soil and plants and disperse their spores into the air. Normal outdoor
mold species commonly found in indoor and outdoor air include Cladosporium, Alternaria,
Aspergillus, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Pithomyces, myxomycetes, ascospores, basidiospores
and many other mold species. When outdoor humidity remains chronically high (> 70% relative
humidity), such has been common over the course of this summer, outdoor and indoor mold
levels tend to increase within 48 to 72 hours.

Results
Initial laboratory results revealed that the all classrooms throughout the building contained
airborne mold levels at levels lower than outdoor levels comprised of common outdoor mold
types. A few classrooms (where mold like discoloration was discovered) contained higher than
expected levels of Aspergillus/Penicillium-like spores, at levels above outdoor levels, consistent
with the extreme high heat and humidity prevalent over the past several weeks of the summer.
Based upon these findings, additional HEPA filtered air scrubbing, cleaning and HEPA
vacuuming was conducted through August 30, 2018 to ensure return of airborne mold levels to
levels typically expected outdoors and indoors given the current weather conditions.

Air sampling conducted on August 31, 2018 revealed that airborne levels in each of the
classrooms where surface mold-like contamination was initially identified, were within normal
ranges at approximately 1/6 to 1/10 outdoor levels comprised of a subset of common outdoor
mold types expected.

Based upon all of the above, it is my professional opinion that airborne mold levels in Lake
Riviera school are within normal ranges. No mold hazard is indicated. All supplemental
dehumidifiers and air scrubbers provided by IRS, Inc, can be removed at the earliest convenience
as soon as September 1, 2018. We have provided instructions directly to Lake Riviera Facilities
Staff for final preparation for teacher arrival next week.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you with the evaluation. Please contact me with any
questions at (856)764-3557.

Sincerely,

Richard M. Lynch
