OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION
The ship shall provide two waste tanks: one sewage tank and one sludge tank.
All black and grey water shall be collected inside the ship’s sewage tank. If it is intended
storing the black water for longer duration we recommend aerating this tank – as offered
optionally - in order to comply with MEPC 53/16 and to avoid H2S build up.
Grey water should not contain food waste, fats, oils or grease. A grease separator is quoted
as an option.
The Hamann sewage treatment plant requires input from the level sensor in the ship’s
sewage tank and the level sensor in the ship’s sludge tank. These may be potential-free
contacts or 4…20 mA electrical signals. If you wish, we may provide optional level sensors
within our scope of supply.
The HL Cont Plus is a skid-mounted physical sewage treatment system consisting of:
 Maceration
 Microflotation
 UV disinfection

The feed pump is separated from mainframe and has a suction height of 2.5 mWC. The feed
pump is a progressive cavity design; therefore dry running protection water is required. If the
toilet system is not macerating, the option for the macerator must be purchased to avoid
blockages of the system. If pressurized seawater of 2 – 3.5 bar is not available, we may
supply an optional non-self priming dry running protection pump.
The treatment process includes the use of a small amount of chemical flocculent for the
separation of solids within the sewage.
The sewage treatment plant will create two flow streams; the treated effluent shall be directly
discharged according to the rules of IMO over board. The second waste stream is the
separated solid residuals, called “sludge”. This sludge is pumpable and may be discharged
according to the rules of IMO, normally outside 12 sm.
Type approval testing considers influent containing 500mg/l solids and effluent containing no
more than 35mg/l solids.
500mg/l - 35mg/l = 465mg/l. Sludge is therefore comprised of the 465mg/l removed during
treatment.
These solids do not readily dissolve in water; therefore, they must be removed and retained
on board. The Hamann STP automatically discharges sludge to a dedicated sludge tank.
There is no requirement to service filters or membranes.
There is no requirement to manually flush the sludge out of the STP.
The Hamann treatment plant requires a constant supply of compressed air, which is normally
provided from the ship.

THE HL- CONT PLUS ADVANTAGES

 Our treatment plant does not require the use of a complicated pre-filtration system,
screens or membranes to treat sewage; therefore, our system is simpler and more
cost effective for the owner.
 Our treatment process does not require activated sludge; therefore, there is no risk of
performance failure due to toxic shock of incoming detergents or cleaning agents.
 Our process is constant, continuous and unaffected by varying hydraulic loads.
 Our treatment capacity and efficiency is relatively higher compared to the competition,
therefore the vessel is able to maintain a much smaller collection tank. Hamann AG
will even calculate the working volume of the tank for you.
 Our system is completely self-cleaning.
 The generation of sludge is kept at an absolute minimum of 3-5%.
 Most treatment plants require a very large diameter ventilation connection. Our
treatment plant ventilation pipe requirement is only 1/2-inch.
 Our sewage treatment plants may be delivered with vibration absorbing mounts and
flexible compensators, ensuring comfortable operation in any environment.
