 So do her children with Arnold Schwar-
zenegger: Katherine, 28; Christina, 26; Pat-
rick, 24; and Christopher, 20. That’s made it
all the harder for Maria to deal with her now-
empty nest. “I wasn’t ready for the flood of
emotions or the loss,” she admits. “For years,
I’ve revolved my own life around theirs.”
Even as she’s let them go, she’s come to re-
alize, “the most important thing I can do is
love them openly and unconditionally. It’s
the time we spend loving one another that
our kids remember most.”
LIFE ON HER OWN
When she and Arnold split in 2011, Maria
judged herself — and her marriage — a fail-
ure. “I always thought people whose mar-
riages didn’t work were quitters and divorce
was a sin,” says Maria, who was raised Cath-
olic. “I couldn’t have been more wrong. I ad-

[a lot] of truths because I’ve spent time in si-
lence, re-evaluating myself and my beliefs.”
Maria has come to have even greater re-
spect for her parents, Eunice Kennedy Shriv-
er and Sargent Shriver. “When I was growing
up, my mother was always reminding me not
to focus on my looks, but my mind,” she says of
Eunice (JFK’s sister), who died in 2009. Ma-
ria’s father, a former vice-presidential candi-
date, passed away in 2011, but near the end of
his long struggle with Alzheimer’s, he left his
daughter with a pearl of insight: “He looked
me dead in the eye and said, ‘You know, you
have to go internal if you want to go eternal.’”
As Maria starts a new life, she won’t dwell
on the past — or future. “I used to spend so
much time beating myself up for choices I’d
made, or I deluded myself by focusing my
attention only on an imagined future,” she
says. “Today I choose to live in the present.
My intention is to authentically be myself.”

the time. You drink and get onstage,
and all of a sudden you feel confident
and powerful,” he says of how things
started to spiral out of control.
“I drank too much. I partied too
much. And I did other things too
much. Chemically,” he confesses. By
2007, the father of three (Maggie and
Audrey came along in 1998 and 2001,
respectively), Tim was playing with
fire — until Faith stepped in. “Her
heart was breaking,” the friend says,
“so she finally told him point-blank,
‘Youcaneitherhaveyourfamily or you
can have this horrible lifestyle. You
can’thaveboth.’”
That, the friend adds, was the wake-
up call Tim needed: “He quit every-
thing cold turkey because he wanted
tobearealfathertohisgirls, and he re-
alized he’d dropped the ball.” Faith’s
belief in their marriage was unwaver-
ing. “She saved my life in a lot of ways
— from myself more than anything,”
Tim says. “I can go down a dark road
sometimes, and she pulls me out. My
wifemakesmeabetterman.”
His recommitment to his family
won Faith’s heart all over again. “Tim
inspires me every day,” she gushes. “I
draw inspiration from watching him
be a father and a husband.” Still, she
takes her job of ensuring they stay on
top while keeping him in check seri-
ously. “She’s the disciplinarian in the
relationship,” a Nashville source tells
Closer. “As loving as they are with each

HEALTH WATCH
She’ll certainly be raising her voice
more now after Tim’s troubles in Dub-
lin. Though he joked with reporters
about the debacle upon returning to
the U.S. (“I gotta cut short my work-
out,” he quipped), Faith’s careful-
ly watching her husband’s strenuous
workout routines and suggesting he
ease things up a little. “Tim loves to
play basketball with his bandmates
and tour crew,” their friend says,
“so she’ll say, ‘Why don’t you just do
that instead of running up a hill with
weights around your ankles?’”
Her concern is understandable.
“He works out three to four hours
a day and he never skips a session,
even when he’s on the road,” an insid-
er tells Closer of the singer’s grueling
mix of CrossFit training, weight lift-
ing and martial arts. He’s even part-

promises Closer. “He’s very lean, and
it’s not genetics. It’s hard work. He’s
very disciplined.”
Adds the insider, “Tim doesn’t know
any other way. He dedicated himself to
getting in the best shape possible af-
ter kicking his bad habits, and working
out became a replacement for them.
His exercise routine would make an
Olympic athlete look lazy!”
Still, his doctors have expressed
concern about the intensity of his
regimen. “They’ve told him that as
he ages he might want to dial it back a
bit, because in some ways he could be
doing himself more harm than good,”
the insider shares. And as Tim and
Faith headed back out on a demand-
ing 70-city Soul2Soul world tour last
April, “Faith saw how it was tiring
for him,” the friend adds, “especial-
ly since he pushes himself so much.
After his collapse, she’s concerned it
could happen again.”
That’s why she’ll be keeping ex-
tra-close tabs on her man as they gear
up for another leg of the tour that be-
gins May 31 and runs through July 24.
“Tim laughs and says he knows he’s in
for it,” their friend reveals. “Faith’s go-
ing to ride herd on him to slow down.
To see him physically break down on-
stage has really made her message to
 him a bit more pointed.” And, as Faith
says, “I like a good fight,” so she’s more
than ready to put her foot down.
COUNTRY STRONG
Tim seems to be coming around to
the fact that he can’t keep attack-
ing his career at full throttle. “There
are nights when you walk off the
stage and think, ‘I never wanna do
that again,’ ” he admits. “It happens,
where you lay down and think, Why
am I continuing to do this?”
The couple have a tropical escape in
the Bahamas to help them juice their
batteries whenever they’re road wea-
ry. The private island villa has allowed
them to focus on each other and their
family since they built the home in
2012. “Faith says it feels like they’re
the only two souls on Earth when
they’re there,” their friend shares.
“With all the pressures of show busi-
ness, it’s a great place to decompress.”

needs, be it affection, time or gifts.”
Faith, who only recently stepped
back into the spotlight after taking
time off to raise their kids, is thankful
for Tim’s support, too. “Tim has given
me confidence and strength and my
foundation,” she gushes. “He makes
me feel like I can conquer the world.
I love my man, and he knows it!” She
also loves the happy place their road
has led, despite all of its twists and
turns. “What makes our marriage
work amid all the glare is that my
husband is my best friend,” she says.
Tim sings his wife’s praises just as
enthusiastically. “I think about the
fact that we’re married and that we
raised these three beautiful daugh-
ters. I mean, it’s a pretty cool thing
for those girls to have her,” he says,
tears welling up in his eyes. He’s
quick to add it’s pretty cool to have
Faith around for him as well, be-
cause her fearlessness to hold him
accountable has kept him honest,
both at home and onstage.
“It’s like Aretha Franklin, Janis
Joplin and Brigitte Bardot all rolled
into one when she comes out and
starts singing,” he raves of her vocal
talent, “so you better have your s---
together when you sing because she’s
gonna flat bring it every time she
opens her mouth!”

Pratt (whose parents were pals of
Paul and Julia’s). They’re also on ex-
hibit at the Napa Valley Museum in
Yountville, Calif., through May 20.
Pasadena, Calif.–born Julia’s time
in France “was a defining moment

In 1961, she co-wrote Mastering the
Art of French Cooking, and the rest
is culinary history. On a more pri-

Grand Hotel, a new pilot for ABC. “I’m in my
second trimester, so it’s like the golden months
of energy, glow and all that,” she said before
entering the last few months of her pregnan-
cy. Even so, there’s a lot she still needs to get to,
like coordinating a move into her new home
and stocking up on baby clothes and gear for
a nursery. “At the end of March, I can start fo-
cusing on getting things ready,” she says of
her growing excitement — and baby. “I’m very
happy,andI’mveryhealthy.It’sablessing!”

pain gets
unbear-
able and we
head to the
doctor for
relief, odds are we’ll be offered a pre-
scription for painkillers like opi-

The O’Neals.
It was me going back to the house I grew
up in and trying to reconnect with him. It
actually hurt us. [But] you just keep trying.
You never give up. That’s my motto.
Are you on better terms today?
Trying. I think he’s still really mad at me, as
well — I’m not quite sure why. Some people
just stay mad and all you can do is try to
take care of your side of the street.

he’s famous for being funny,
but Ellen DeGeneres got seri-
ous recently when she opened
up about a past tragedy that
changed her life forever. “My
girlfriend was killed in a car ac-
cident when I was 20 years old,” she recalled.
“And I wasn’t doing comedy.”
Ellen, 60, admits the relationship had
been struggling. “We had fought a lot,” she
says, adding that although they had separat-
ed, “I was planning on moving back in. I was
just trying to teach her a lesson.” Sadly, after
a night out watching Ellen’s brother perform
with his band, her girlfriend died in a violent
car accident while on the way home. Ellen
drove by the crash site, unaware that it was
her girlfriend in the mangled car. “I found
out the next morning,” she says. “That, of
course, made me feel like I should have
stopped. A lot of guilt.”
The loss forced Ellen to rethink her life.
“It made me realize how easily you can lose
somebody,” she says. “It shifted my en-
tire focus.” The budding comedian says she
thought at the time, “It would be great to just
pick up the phone and call up God and talk
ELLEN DEGENERES about this,” she recalls about trying to un-
derstand her grief. She wrote out the conver-
sation, and afterward, she says, “I thought,
‘Johnny Carson would love that, and I’m go-
ing to do that on the show.’”

In 2014, Tony, his wife of 18 years, Lina,
daughter Luana, 12, and twins Adrian and
Ariana, 9, found the house of their dreams in
the area they loved: a four-bedroom, three-
and-a half bath home on a stunning 2.6
acres. “Having over an acre of land in front
is what sold me,” he says. “I have a place for a
trampoline and swing set so the kids can play.”
There’s also plenty of room for them to play
inside the 3,600-square-foot abode, which
Tony says is just the right size for his family.
“If you need an intercom to see if your kids are
there, that’s the wrong home,” he says, adding
that the kids’ bedrooms are situated so “they
have to go by ours to get outside.”
Lina’s love of feng shui inspired a four-
month remodel of the 19-year-old home:
