Homework Assignment ONE : Repetitious objects

Choose one of the following repetitious subjects to draw: A loaf of bread (thick sliced), a
bunch of bananas (at least 5), Eggs in their carton (at least a half dozen…you may
remove one or two eggs from the carton and set in front to create variety in the design)
or, five green peppers, five apples, five lemons…you get the idea. For composition sake,
try cutting one in half, or peeling one part way.

Procedure: Warm up by making a gesture drawing of your subject (5-10min.). Take note
of large forms and sections rather than details. Consider the placement of the
objects/shapes in terms of farness or nearness in relation to each other and yourself, as
well as overlapping sections. Consider the main axis of where the subject is grounded.
Do this on your news print as a preliminary step to your final drawing, to get to know
your subject.

Make your final drawing on 18x24 Drawing Paper. Begin drawing lightly, utilizing
envelope shape, light gesture and unit of measurement. Use an object or section of an
object as a measurable unit to gauge the size of others. For example: the egg carton is 6
eggs long, etc.
After all units are correctly proportioned and the general shapes are correct, begin
considering line quality—looking for opportunities to vary your line weight and darkness.
You should end up using your 6B after laying out the initial under-drawing with an HB,
2B and 4B.

erasing.
