Is this the end of finals at NPHS?

For the first year in New Palestine
High School, finals are no longer
mandatory for teachers to give.
Instead, teachers can choose
whether to give a final exam, give a
project, or anything else they might
want, but it doesn’t necessarily count
as 20 percent of your grade.
Some teachers may enjoy this
since its less for them to grade and
being able to be more creative with
their finals, and most students will
like not having to cram so much
at the end of the semester, but, as
always, everyone shares different
opinions.
English teacher Kent Gish says he
doesn’t mind this.
“I’m fine with not having finals.
Teachers can still give a big test and

but it just won’t officially be a ‘final.’

think there is some merit in giving
a final, but if it turns into something
that only hurts students, then it isn’t
good,” Gish said.

Young students invade buses

The 2018-2019 school year
has started off with an unpopular
change. With the opening of New
Palestine Intermediate School, fifth
and sixth graders have been added to
the New Palestine High School and
New Palestine Junior High bus route.
Since fifth and sixth graders are
less mature, students have taken a
disliking to them.
Personally, I am completely
against the changes. The younger
students are all much louder, and
they disturb the silence, especially in
the mornings.

stops, and the bus driver is always
yelling at them. We are packed in like
sardines, but the smaller kids have to

the buses facing each other, is pure
chaos,” Manning said.

Summer changes teachers curriculum

During the summer of 2018, the teachers at
New Palestine High School met up and talked
about what they’re going to do for the 2018-2019
school year. The meeting ended with some of the
teachers changing the classes they will teach this
year.
One of those teachers that changed what
they’re teaching is Mark Blachly. Blachly who had
taught physics and integrated physics. He is now
teaching AP physics, early college physics, and AP
computer science for the 2018-2019 school year.
“I always ask my kids after they go to college

things kids tell me that were useful was when I
taught them how to use (Microsoft) Excel or do
simulations,” Blachly said.
Blachly asks his past students a lot of different
questions to see if he needs to change how he’s
teaching or what he’s teaching.
“I’m teaching an AP computer science. It’s a
computer science course that will get kids AP
credit and there’s two computer science courses.
One is called the principles course which is a
broad overview of computers, computers in soci-
ety, and some coding and the other course is just
coding,” Blachly said.
He believes teaching a lot of different types of
courses will give his students a good background
in science, math, and working with computers. By
taking college classes he believes that it will help
prepare his students for their future.
“So, I think moving out of high school and
into college you have to have some experience
using computers as more than just typewriters and
document delivery devices. You have to somehow
harness their computing power to solve problems
and be able to do something,” Blachly said.
He believes computers should be used more
for their other purposes than just for writing in
different apps. So, he tries to teach his students
how to do different things on their computers like
math equations, excel, coding, and other things.
He does this so that they will be able to progress
more in college and in the future.
“You have to have some fairly decent back-
ground in mathematics to do well in computer
science because computer science is basically
using computers to solve problems and if you
don’t have a basic understanding of how to solve
problems using a computer to help you is going to
be a tough fall. I mean, I think if you’re competent
and fluent in algebra 1 and geometry then you’re
ready to take computer science, but you don’t
need calculus or anything,” Blachly said.
How he set up his class is that his students
will use their computers as a way of showing how
they do equations that they’re required to do. In
order to be in any of his classes the students need
to have some background of how to do math in
order for them to follow along with the lessons.
“Every high school in Indiana is going to have
to offer computer science at some point. The leg-
islature recognized the need for kids to have some
exposure to computer science, and the principles
course is nice, because it’s for people who are
going to become computer programmers. So, if
you’re going into biology, medicine, or anything
science related or economics or real estate you’re
going to use computers as ways to solve problems,
and understanding how that works is important,”
Blachly said.
Due to most of the schools around the United
States being mostly internet based for how the
students complete their lessons has made it so
there’s a demand for the schools to teach different
computer classes. This has made it so that students
are able to learn more things about what they are
studying and are able to learn a different way of

New Palestine High School’s
2018-2019 seniors will have a new
opportunity that might help ensure
jobs to graduates. The Governor’s
Work Ethic Certificate is an opportu-
nity afforded to seniors who demon-
strate the nine areas of academic and
work ethic competency.
Teachers will determine whether
or not the applicant has the subjec-
tive criterion: persistence, respect-
fulness, initiative, dependability,
and efficiency. Teacher will then
sign stating that the student has met
the requirements. Four additional
objective competencies: GPA, atten-
dance, discipline, and service will be
obtained from the student manage-
ment system to indicate competency
in measurable areas.
To qualify for the objective com-
petencies, students must do the fol-
lowing: have a GPA of 2.0 or higher,
friends.He now has a family, which
includes his wife, Evelyn Robin,
played by Hayley Atwell, and his
daughter, Madeline Robin, played by
Bronte Carmichael.
Christopher Robin gets a job at a
luggage company named, Winslow
Luggages and gets caught up in his
job. His family plans a weekend
away before his daughter goes off to
school, his plans change when work
needs him to cut cost and work all
weekend. Walking home from work,
he meets Pooh.
Pooh stays with him and makes
him see what he’s losing. He shows
Christopher Robin that he needs to
focus on his family, not his job.
On the journey with the group
are the dreaded woozles and hef-
falumps. These scary beast show
Christopher who he really is.
Having the characters look
real instead of cartoon animation
makes the story even more realistic.
Thinking of Christopher Robin in
real life, makes viewers relate more
to his problems, thus making the
movie better.
Pooh lives up to the original car-
toon animation. He’s still the little
old bear who wears his red shirt.
Also, he still loses focus easily with
even the slightest notion of honey or
a balloon.
The rest of the group stills looks
and sounds like the cartoons. They
wear the same clothes and act the
same way, some excited and some
sad.
Liking Winnie the Pooh as
a young child made this movie
exciting. You can finally imagine the
characters in real life, instead of only
knowing them as animation.
It is rumored that some people
think these characters are scary in
real life, but hearing them speak and
act like they did in the cartoon made
them adorable.
Getting Christopher Robin and
Winnie the Pooh back was a joy to
all. Moviegoers finally can see that
getting older happens and people
lose things.
So, take an adventure back to the

Girls soccer
The Dragon girls soccer team
has started the season with a
4-1 record, with wins over Perry
Meridian (7-0), Triton Central
(9-1), Southport (6-0) and New
Castle (3-0). NP is ranked 15th in
Class 2A.
Olivia Lambdin led the team
with five goals in the first five

won its opener 3-1 against Warren
Central.

goals for the Dragons.

all the new people on the
soccer team?
“It’s been easy because all
the new guys are pretty fun to
hang out with, and they’re fun
to play with also so I haven’t
had much difficulty with it.”
What are you looking for-
ward to this season?
“Just playing with all the
guys, they’re fun. And coach
(Justin) Sass is also a great
dude and I just want to have
fun with all the players on the
team.”

How do you plan to get
better as the season progress-
es, how do you want to push
yourself?
“I practice a lot. I have a swing
coach who always pushes me
farther and farther. My father
pushes me a lot so I think that
helps a lot.”
What are you looking for-
ward to this year?
“Going to state. Last year, my
first year going to state, I tied
for 13th. I think we have a good
chance to compete as a team.
I’d like to try to go as a team this
year. I think it would be a really
good achievement if we did.”
