1.2 Description
The CTM-100 is a dual-port, stand-alone modem that converts data between an NRZ format and Condi-
tioned Diphase Interface (CDI). The multiformat data can be one of many standards, including RS-423,
EIA-530A, X.21, V.35, RS-449, and RS-232. The primary use of this modem is to transport data over
long distance (up to two miles) using CX-11230 coaxial cable, as shown in Figure 1-1.

The modem incorporates test functions such as local loopback and bit error rate test (BERT). The
BERT functions can be used to test the error performance of a connected link or cable assembly. By
using the modem as a repeater, the CTM-100 can also be used to extend the distance that CDI data can
travel.
Each of the two ports can be configured independently to communicate with either of the following:
• Data Terminal Equipment (DTE)
An end unit that communicates with the user, converts user information into signals for transmis-
sion or reconverts the received signals into user information.
• Data Circuit-terminating Equipment (DCE)
The equipment that performs functions, such as signal conversion and coding, at the network end of
the line between the data terminal equipment (DTE) and the line.
By providing flexible communication options, the CTM-100 can connect to most standard RS-530
devices using standard communication cables.
Each port can be configured using the front panel display, or by attaching an external terminal to the
RS-232 DB-9 connector on the back of the modem. Flexible configuration allows the user to select the
data rate, clock option, RS-530 mode and test options for each port. Data and clock polarity are also
programmable, for ease of connection to non-standard devices.
Various test patterns can be selected for checking cables and far end equipment that is connected to the
modem. A loopback option can be used with either the CDI or RS-530 port for testing of cables and the
modem internal circuitry.
Communication is done through a CX-11230 cable, attached to an SMA connector. Data rate depends
upon cable distance, as shown in Table 1-1.

2. Modem Setup
2.1 Overview
Once the CTM-100 modem has been removed from its shipping carton, it can be placed on the desktop,
or mounted into a standard 19” rack. The use of two dual-port modems mounted side-by-side in a 19”
rack will allow four CDI ports to fit with 1.75” (1U) of space. Note that the dual-modem setup requires
a rack-mount shelf kit (part #PAQ2106-XX).
This chapter provides an overview of the external interface of the CTM-100. This includes:

The LCD is a character device, capable of displaying two lines of 20 characters each. Each line is ded-
icated to providing information for one of the two data ports. The display can be used to prompt for
configuration input, or to display status values.
Four push buttons are included on the front panel. Each port has two push buttons associated with it.
They are used as follows:
• Menu
The Menu button is used to select a menu item (field) to be displayed on the left-side of that port’s
associated line of the display screen.
• Select
The Select button is used to cycle through the optional values for that menu item currently being
displayed. The currently-enabled selection is marked with an asterisk. The current selection can be
changed by holding down the Menu or Select button until the display blanks. When the button is
released, the display is restored, and the new selection is active.

There are four jacks for the CDI interface. Each group uses two jacks (one for CDI input and one for
CDI output). Connection to the CDI interface is done using 50 ohm coaxial cable, with SMA jacks.
The mating connector for the CDI interface is a standard coaxial SMA plug.
There are two NRZ ports (one for each group). Each NRZ interface uses a male DB-25 connector. The
pinouts for the NRZ interface are shown in Table 2-1. When the drivers are placed in a single-ended
mode (e.g. RS-232), the B inputs and outputs are not used.
A standard male DB-9 serial port connector is located on the CTM-100 rear panel. This allows an
optional serial connection to an external terminal for command-level configuration and testing. The
serial port uses a standard RS-232 port operating at 9600 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, one stop bit.

3. Modem Configuration
3.1 Overview
The CTM-100 modem can be configured using the front display panel, or by connecting an optional ter-
minal to the serial port provided on the back. Configuration settings are stored in non-volatile memory
so that they are saved when the unit is turned off, and restored when it is turned back on.
This chapter will help you to configure your CTM-100, with discussions of:
• The front panel
• Configuration using the front panel
• Configuration using terminal commands

Configuration Using the Front Panel
Each of the menu items is described in further detail in the following sections.
The configuration RATE screen selects the port rate to be used. The options are 64, 72, 128, 144, 256,
288, 512, 576, 1024, 1152, 1536, 2048, 2304, 4096, 4608 Kb/s, or AUTO. The AUTO rate selection
automatically determines the port rate from the clock source.
NOTE: If the clock source (CK_SRC) is the internal (INT) clock then AUTO is not an optional setting.
If AUTO is selected then CK_SRC = INT is not an option.
The configuration MODE screen selects the NRZ signal electrical interface type. The possible options
are EIA-530A, RS-423, X.21, V.34, RS-449, RS-232, or Disable. The Disable option places the port in
Tri-state mode.
The configuration CONF screen selects the equipment device type. The options are DCE/INT, DCE/
EXT, DTE/INT, or DTE/EXT. The device type DCE or DTE describes the direction of data and
clocks. The selection of INT or EXT describes how the Tx Data is clocked or qualified. The following
figures show the difference between the four optional settings:
When the DCE/INT option is selected, as illustrated in Figure 3-2, the receive Tx Data is qualified by
the generated internal port clock that is present at the Tx Clock leads. This is useful for DTE devices
that do not produce SCTE timing.

The clock source (CK_SRC) option identifies which direction and where the port timing is derived
from. The options are CDI, INT, SCTE, RxC, or TxC. The INT setting cannot be used when the
RATE is set to AUTO. The following figures show the options depending on whether the device is of
type DCE or DTE.
When the modem is in DCE mode (CONF=DCE/INT or DCE/EXT) then clock source options include
CDI, INT and SCTE. While in this mode, the SCTE setting can be used, but RxC and TxC do not apply,
as illustrated in Figure 3-6.
SCTE 24(11)
Clk-DCE-SCTE
When the modem is in DTE mode (CONF=DTE/INT or DTE/EXT) then clock source options include
CDI, INT, RxC and TxC. While in this mode, the TxC and TxC settings can be used, but SCTE does
not apply, as illustrated in Figure 3-7.
OSCILLATOR
Clk-DTE-RxTx
The CK_EDGE (clock edge) setting allows for changing of transmit clock/data phase relationship to
make up the difference in cable length, or non-compliant equipment. The options are NORM (normal)
or INV (inverse).
The DATA setting allows the option to invert the data for non-compliant equipment. The options are
NORM (normal) or INV (inverse).
14 PAQ1900 Preliminary
Configuration Using the Front Panel
The TPATT (test pattern) setting specifies which pattern is to be generated/detected in the direction
determined by the TMODE setting for testing of the communications link. The options are 511, 1:0, all
1’s, or all 0’s.
The TMODE (test mode) setting enables and determines which direction the test patterns are to be gen-
erated and detected. The options are OFF (default), NRZ, or CDI.
The LOOP settings are used to loopback data toward the connected equipment. Care should be taken
for clock source consideration. The options are OFF (default), NRZ or CDI.
The Bit Error Rate (BER) status displays the calculated number of received bits in error over time.
Pressing the SELECT button will reset the BER counters and restart the calculations.
The ERRORS menu item options depend upon the value of the test mode (TMODE). When test mode
is off, this has little value. When a test mode has been selected, ERRORS will initially show the actual
number of bit errors received.
When ERRORS is the current menu item, press SELECT until you see:
• CLEAR, then hold the SELECT button down until errors are cleared.
• INSERT, then hold the SELECT button down to insert a single bit error into the bitstream deter-
mined by TMODE. This is used for a sanity check while testing of data link systems to ensure data
paths are set according to a test plan. When an error is inserted, the error should be detected some-
where in the link.
The STATUS screen displays the current status of the Port. The contents displayed are the programmed
rate, and port activity. The rate value is that which is programmed by the user or the value programmed
by the auto-rate selection circuitry while in the RATE = AUTO mode. If the RATE programmed by the
user is not equal to the rate sensed by the auto-rate circuitry, the rate will be followed by a “?”. The dis-
played rate is in Kb/s.
Following the rate status is the CDI port activity status. It is used as follows.
The value
displayed is... If the CDI port is...
“C” active and is also the system clock source
“c” active, but is not the system clock source
““ not active
Following the CDI port activity status is the NRZ port activity status. It is used as follows.
The value
displayed is... If the NRZ port is...
“N” active and is also the system clock source
“n” active, but is not the system clock source
