double duty in your wardrobe. You can wear it to the office during the week and then
don it on the weekend for long country walks. The shawl collar is especially flattering.

LEFT FRONT
Cast on 44 (46, 48, 50) sts.Work 36 (38, 40, 42) sts K2, P1 Rib, beg as follows:
Sizes S and 1X P 1, *k 2, p 1; rep from * to last 8 10 sts, k2.
Size M K 2, *k 2, p *p1, k2; rep from * to last 8 sts.
Size L K 1, p 1, *k 2, p 1; rep from * to last 8 10 sts, k2.

SLEEVES

Row 2 (WS) P 2 (0, 2, 0), *p 2, k 1; rep from * to end. K the knits and p the purls.
Cap shaping:
Next row (RS) K 2, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, ssk, k 2. Repeat decreases every other row 9 (10,
10, 10) times more. Bind off rem 35 37 (39, 41, 47) sts.

GAUGE:

13.5 sts and 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will
be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size
hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles
and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to the right needle; insert
the left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

BACK
Cast on 76 (80, 84, 88) sts.
Row 1 (RS)*K 2, p 1; rep from *, end k 1 (2, 0, 1).
Row 2 (WS) P 1 (2, 0, 1), *p 2, k 1; rep from * to end.
Rep last 2 rows 3 times more. Cont work in St st for 18 rows.
Next row K 1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1. Work even for 17 rows. Repeat dec row once more – 72
(76, 80, 84) sts. Work even until piece measures 19 in. from beg, end after WS row.
Armhole shaping:
Decrease row (RS)K 2, ssk, k to last 4 sts, k2tog, k 2. Repeat decrease every other row 9 (10, 10, 10)
times more – 52 (54, 58, 62) sts. Work even until armhole measures 8½ (9, 9½, 10) in.
Shoulder shaping
Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 (4, 6, 2) rows; bind off 5 sts at beg of next 4 (2, 0, 0) rows; then bind off 7
sts at beg of next 0 (0, 0, 4) rows. Bind off rem 20 (20, 22, 22) sts for back neck.
POCKET LINING (make 2)
Cast on 21 sts.Work in St st for 28 rows. Leaving a long tail for sewing, cut yarn and place all sts on
holder.

LEFT FRONT
Cast on 44 (46, 48, 50) sts.
Work 36 (38, 40, 42) sts K2, P1 Rib, beg as follows:
Sizes S and 1X P 1, *k 2, p 1; rep from * to last 10 sts, k2.
Size M K 2, *p 1, k2; rep from * to last 8 sts.
Size L K 1, p 1, *k 2, p 1; rep from * to last 10 sts, k2.
Work last 8 sts in P1, K1 Rib for placket, and slip 1st st at beg of each WS row.Work pat in this way for 8
rows. Cont in St st, keeping last 8 sts in P1, K1 Rib.Work even for 18 rows.
Next row (dec) K 1, ssk, work to end. Repeat dec once more after 17 rows – 42 (44, 46, 48) sts.
Pocket
Cont even for 4 more rows and work pocket as follows:
K 10 (12, 14, 16), (p 1, k 1) 9 times, p 1, work to end. Cont in this way 4 rows more.
Next row (WS) Work 8 sts placket, p 6, bind off 19 sts in rib, work to end.
Next row (RS) K 9 (11, 13, 15), k2tog working 1 st from main needle and 1 st from holder, knit across
19 sts from holder, k2tog working 1 st from main needle and 1 st from holder, work to end. Work even
until piece measures 19 in. from beg.
Armhole and neck shaping:
Next row (RS)K 2, ssk, k to last 11 sts, k2tog, k 1, M1 as if to knit, (p1, k1) 4 times. Repeat dec at beg
of every other row for armhole 9 (10, 10, 10) times more. Repeat dec at placket edge every 4th row 6 (6,
7, 7) times more. Repeat increase after last “k 1” before placket every other row 15 times more,
alternating M1 in knit or purl to keep in pat. When armhole measures same as for back, shape shoulder as
for back beg with RS row. Cont shawl collar for 3 in. more. Bind off or place sts on holder. Mark placement
of buttons, placing the first one ½ in. from lower edge, the last one at beg of shawl collar, and 5 spaced
evenly between.

RIGHT FRONT
Work as for left front, reversing shaping and working 7 (yo, k2tog) buttonholes in center of 8-st placket
opposite markers on Left Front.

SLEEVES
Cast on 29 (33, 35, 39) sts.
Row 1 (RS) *K 2, p 1; rep from *, end k 2 (0, 2, 0).
Row 2 (WS) K the knits and p the purls.
Rep last 2 rows 5 times more.
Cont in St st.
Next row (RS) K1, M1, k to last st, M1, k 1.
Repeat every 4th row 13 times more – 57 (61, 63, 69) sts. Work even until piece measures 17 in.
Cap shaping:
Next row (RS) K 2, ssk, k to last 4 sts, k2tog, k 2. Repeat decreases every other row 9 (10, 10, 10) times
more. Bind off rem 37 (39, 41, 47) sts.
FINISHING
Sew shoulders seams. Sew collar to back neck. Set sleeves into armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams.
Sew sides of pocket lining to WS. Weave in loose ends. Sew on buttons.
