Examination, May/June 2016 .
REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING

Duration: 3 Hours Total Marks: 100

Instructions: 1) Answer five questions in all selecting at least one question

from each Module.
2) Assume missing data if any. .
3) Use of thermodynamics charts and steam table is permitted.

MODULE -I

1. A) Discuss Industrial Applications of refrigeration and Air-conditioning.

8) Write a short note on Dry Ice Refrigeration.

C) Explain with neat sketch working principle of Vortex Tube refrigeration with
its advantages and disadvantages. (6+6+8)

2. A) Explain with a neat sketch the reduced ambient air refrigeration system.
8) A boot-strap cooling system of 10 TR capacity is used in an aeroplane. The
ambient air temperature and pressure are 20°C and 0.85 bar respectively.
The pressure of air increases from 0.85 barto 1 bar due to ramming action of
air. The pressure of air discharged from the main compressor is 3 bar. The
discharge pressure of air from the auxiliary compressor is 4 bar. The isentropic
efficiency of each compressor is 80% while that of turbine is 85%. 50% of
enthalpy of air discharged from main compressor is removed in the first heat
exchanger and 30% of enthalpy of air discharged from main compressor is
removed in secondary heat exchanger using rammed air. Assuming ramming
action to be isentropic, the required cabin pressure of 0.9 bar and temperature
of the air leaving the cabin not more than 20°C, find: 1. The power required to
operate the system and 2. The COP of the system. Draw the schematic and
temperature-entropy diagram of the system. Take'Y = 1.4ardCp = 1kJ1<g.

MODULE-II
3. A~ Explain the effect of sub-cooling of condensate on vapour compression system
with the help of T-S and P-H diagram.

B) What is the function of a flash intercooler provided in a compound vapour

compression refrigeration system?

C) Derive an expression for.the C.O.P. of an ideal vapour absorption system. In

vapour absorption system heat is supplied to the generator at a temperature
of 90°C. The cooling in the condenser and refrigeration evaporation takes
place at 20°C and -10°C respectively. Find the maximum C.O.P. of the
system. (5+5+ 10)

4. A) Sketch and explain a cascade refrigeration system. Also plot cycle on T-S
and H-S diagrams.

B) A two stage compression ammonia refrigeration system with water and flash
iQtercooler and water sub-cooling operates between overall pressure limits of
. .
15 bar and 2 bar. The flash intercooler pressure is 5 Bar. The temperature of
refrigerant leavingthe water intercooler and the water sub-cooler is limitedto 20°C.
The refrigerant is dry and saturated at the inlet to the low pressure compressor.
If the load is 15 TR, find: a) coefficient of performance and
b) power required to drive each compressor. (8+12)

MODULE-III

, 5. A) Describe the working of an evaporative condenser.

B) When dehumidification of air necessary and how it is achieved?

C) Describe the operation of capillary tube in refrigeration systems. Why is it

preferred in household refrigerator?

D) Write a short not on Thermodynamic Wet Bulb Temperature. What you mean
by by-pass factor of cooling coil? (5+5+5+5)

6. A) Write a short note on adiabatic saturation process.

B) Prove that the enthalpy of humid air remains constant along a wet bulb
temperature line on psychrometrjc chart.
