Here are some of the French words and expressions which have carved a niche in day to day English

conversation . I believe being aware of them would certainly go a long way in making the students assert their
point even in the court .

1. Carte Blanche( literally –blank cheque) : Freedom to do / decide anything


2. Faux Pas(literally –wrong step )- An embarrassing social mistake
3. Tête –a- tête (literally –head to head ):A private conversation between just two people
4. Déjà vu (literally – already seen ) : a feeling that an event has been experienced before
5. Laissez Faire ( let it be done , the way it wants ): A policy of non interfering in state/beaureaucratic affairs
6. Crème de la crème (literally -cream out of cream )– The best out of best
7. Piece de resistance : (literally-Most tempting) – Masterpiece
8. Coup: : (literally-Strike ) : A rebellion / a revolt
9. Forte: strength
10. Comme çi comme ça ( literally –like this like that ) : so – so
11. Rendezvous : Appointment
12. Cliché : An idea or expression which has been overused
13. Bête noire (litera;lly black beast) Something you hate or want to avoid
14. C’est la vie : That’s life
15. Avant Garde : Pioneering work /Piece of performance
