Yarnell Magazine * July 2015Have you ever wondered
why my palette is arranged
the way it is? The answer may
surprise you.
I like this layout for no
particular reason other than
that's the way I like it and it
feels comfortable! The truth
is there are no technical
reasons why a palette is laid
out a certain way. However,
most artists like to keep their
lighter colors together and
darker colors together, and
sometimes, similar hues
together. It really depends
on your style, subject color |
scheme, and personality.
My recommendation is to set up your
palette to make you feel comfortable.
My staff and students have a great time
making fun of my dirty palette!
| often get asked the question “Why a
dirty palette?” My answer (sometimes)
"Why a white palette?”

Researching for your painting can be one
of the most rewarding experiences of
being an artist. As for me, as much as I
love the actual painting process,
researching is as much or some times
more fun than painting itself!
Most of us, whether we know it or not,
are in a constant state of research. For
example, have you ever been on a road
trip? As you are driving along you spot
an old fence post with a piece of rusty
barbed wire wrapped around it. So you
do the most logical thing, you pull off the
road to take a picture. Of course, your
passenger thinks you are crazy. Well, |
guess only an artist can get excited about
a piece of rusty barbed wire.
I know some of you like to keep your

reference material on your computer.
For me, | prefer to place them in binders
so | can take them out and mark on them,
or clip them to my easel for easy study
as | am painting. Then I can re-file them
when | am done.
This is a photo of part of my
reference library. Most of you will not
have a library this extensive,
but you can certainly have one ona
smaller scale to meet your needs.
Each binder is labeled by subject
and numbered — as is each reference
sheet numbered to match that
particular book for easy re-iling.
This is how | do it, but you have to
do what works best for you. Just have
fun and always be on the look out for
interesting subjects to add to your files.
This is nothing more
than God telling
us to be constantly
aware of his
presence in our lives;
fo always be on
the look out
for ways that
we can improve
our own lives and
how we can help others.
In other words, we are constanily researching ways to
better our selves until we become a complete work of art.
Yarnell Magazine * July 2015I's all
lam often asked the question “Why do you
use Cadmium Red Light on your palette,
instead of a much brighter more true red?”
The answer is really simple. Most of the
paintings that | have done over the years
have been landscape and related landscape
subjects. Most landscape artists prefer to use
a softer, warmer more earthy red. Cadmium
Red Light fits that description perfectly.
Over all Cad. Red Light is perfectly suited for
most landscape paintings. However, on
occasion a much truer, crisper red is needed
for a special subject; such as a red apple,
red feathers on a bird, or maybe a red
dress, shirt, or other piece of material or
other brighter red object.
Keep in mind that Cad. Red Light is on the
orange side of red which makes it easier to
mix with other earth tones like Hookers
Green; its compliment to create a rich warm
green. It's great for sunsets, flowers, and a
great additive to Purple to create great
under painting tones for birds and animals.
Any time you paint a red object, it is
important to under paint the object in
the proper tones. For example, the male
cardinal you see here is under painted
with a darker value of Cad. Red Light
and about 1/4 Dioxazine Purple. This
will give you a very rich burgundy color.
Then you can begin applying the
different shades of reds or other colors in | |
successive layers until you achieve the
desired brightness.
This process is the same for all red
objects. The only difference is that the
underpainting tone will vary from object
to object. You may use Blue, Purple,
Hookers Green, or even BT Umber tothe
Red to create the deep under painting
tone. Then again, apply successive lighter
layers of Red until you are satisfied.
So what red would be good for these
objects? This is my recommendation for
a more true, rich Red. | am giving you
several choices so you can experiment.
| keep all of these handy in case | need
them. Experiment and have fun with
* Cad. Red Medium
* Cad. Deep Hue
* Naphthol Crimson (my favorite)
* Deep Magenta

Well, it is time to have a discussion about
a question we receive on a daily basis
here at the studio! And that is:
“Who is Joseph Yarnell?”
Jerry's official, legal name is Joseph
Jerome Yarnell, Jr. — but everyone calls
him Jerry.
The History: His father is also named
Joseph Jerome Yarnell — so to tell them
apart, his parents began calling him
Jerry; it has stuck as the name everyone
knows him by and it has served him well
in his professional career as an artist.
Jerry actually has two careers. Most of
you know him as a teacher.

popular P.B.S. TV show, “Paint This

* Jerry at his successful private art
school, “The Yarnell School of Fine

Western— Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) —
We receive many questions by phone,
email or via our website. While in the
past we have tried to respond personally
to every question we receive, the
wonderful, vast growth of our student
following and sheer volume of email
questions now precludes us from
personally responding.
So, we decided to compile all of your
great questions in one place. From the
YarnellSchool.com, click on the FAQs tab
on the left. Once on the FAQ page, you
will find answers organized by various
categories. You can also use the search
option to find what you're looking for,
i.e., type “art supplies” into the search
box to find a copy of Jerry’s supply list /
palettes. The FAQs are answers to
questions that Jerry has answered over
35+ years, plus they are a FREE GREAT
resource for Jerry’s students. Enjoy!
oT
‘An example of an FAQ we get is: “When is it OKAY to copy Jerry's Work? When is it NOT OKAY?
Recently a young artist posted a photo on
social media of a painting that he had
copied from Jerry's recent fine art piece
called “Oklahoma Fury”, which you can
view in this publication. The artist
responded quite angrily when we quickly
informed him of the inappropriateness of
copying any of Jerry’s personal fine art
paintings as we strictly do not allow this.
Since we regularly receive inquiries
relating to selling student versions of
Jerry's in-structional work, we felt it timely
that we once again provide Jerry's
policy.
Can sign my name to a painting although | painted it from an art book, video, or photo-graph of
one of Jerry's paintings?
Yes. As long as it is one of his instructional materials and NOT one of his personal fine
art Gallery paintings. While Jerry is pretty liberal in allowing students to copy his
instructional paintings, he is not flexible in allowing anyone to copy his personal
Gallery pieces.
Jerry requests that you please:
Sign your name to your art work and not Jerry’s name (yes, sadly this has happened).
Give him credit on the back of your painting, i.e., “this paintings was completed under
the instruction of ‘ey Yarnell of the Yarnell School of fine Art, LLC.”
—Change the ‘name’ of the painting from the title that Jerry has used when ek
entering your art into a competition, show, or gallery.
Gan | copyright “my” version of these paintings?
We don’t mind if you copyright your own pieces as long as it does not
look so similar to Jerry’s that everyone can recognize it was
taken from one of his instructional materials. Just like with 7
music — change it up enough so that it’s clear that the work e+,
is yours. Then sell the heck out of i! @2@@OO LZ Py
