PHOTO-BASED ILLUSTRATION

PROJECT: You will select a high quality photo on which to base an illustration. The photo will
need to be sufficiently complex in color and subject to produce a detailed illustration. Photos
and subject matter will be approved on a case-by-case basis.

If you have a working knowledge of Photoshop, you may combine various images into one. This
will have to be approved by instructor.

Once your photo is approved, you will use your Pen Tool to create paths based on the colors
within your photo. You will sample the colors within the photo with the color picker to add to
your paths. Averaging of two color points will be taught to help with color selection.

This project will include very complex paths and the Layers palette should be used to help you
organize them. First (base) layer should contain the photo you are working from.

RULES: Final Project must be printed on 11”x17” paper with no more than a half inch of
whitespace as a border (Final trim size should be no less than 10”x16). Your project can be
printed on either the color laser printer or for richer color, the photo printer. Your final trimmed
printout will be mounted on a 15”x20” blackboard.

Print out a copy of your original image as well (it can be untrimmed on 8.5x11” paper) to turn
in with your project board. This will be used for color comparison so both should be printed on
the same printer. Please print your name and section number on the back of this printout and
hand it in along with your mounted project.

Tape your Gradesheet to the back of your blackboard with the Name, Class and Section lines
filled out. DO NOT mount it to the board since it will be removed and added to your notebook.
Your Name, Class and Section should be typed on a label and glued to the back of the board
itself. These projects will be displayed for a time in the display cases opposite the computer
lab, therefore I will need your info on them so I will be able to return them to you.

You will also turn in your Final Project as a digital file, all layers, including the photo layer,
should be intact. Digital file must be turned in on the instructors flash drive as prior
assignments have been.

You will Learn: How to use Layers palette

How to use the color picker
How to multiple divide
How to group and hide
How to select same fill/stroke etc.
How to average 2 points

Due at the beginning of class on 10-20

Turn In: 2 Color Lasers (1 of original image) - mounted on 15 x 20 Blackboard

1 Illustrator file of Final Project with original image included in first layer

Grading Criteria: You will be graded on the use of tools you have learned, as well as following
directions. Final Project should be no smaller than 10”x16” trimmed and
mounted to a 15”x20” blackboard. Quality of final execution, correctness
of color and complexity will all be factors in your final grade. Digital file
should be saved correctly as an Illustrator document.
