EQ: Should Hawaii institute the death penalty?

Three Points to Prove: #1: The death penalty is not a deterrent to crime.
#2: The death penalty is inhumane.
#3: The death penalty is not cost effective.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
Point that this Source/Information Proves: # 1: The death penalty is not a deterrent of crime.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

“When the smaller crimes go down--the quality of life crimes--then the murder rate goes down,” Mr. Carlisle said.

“We haven’t had the death penalty, but we have one of the lowest murder rates in the country,” he said. “The F.B.I.
statistics for 1998 showed Hawaii’s homicide rate was the fifth lowest.”

“At Michigan’s constitutional convention in 1961, the delegates heard arguments that the death penalty was not a
deterrent, that those executed were usually the poor and disadvantaged, and that innocent people had been sentenced to
death.”

“Culture and religion play a role, as well as political vagaries in each state.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This website provides arguments against capital punishment. The author suggests the death penalty is not a
deterrent to crime. Surprisingly, the homicide rates of several different states that do not have the death penalty are
actually lower than those with the death penalty. Hawaii is one of these states. There are quotes from judges, governors,
and the prosecuting attorney from Hawaii, Peter Carlisle. Carlisle makes a reference to the Bryan Uyesugi case – where
the defendant shot seven of his co-workers at the Xerox copy machine company.
There is specific evidence against the death penalty that indicates it is not a deterrent to crime. For example, even
without the death penalty, Hawaii has the fifth lowest homicide rate in the nation. This proves, at least to some degree,
that a state without the death penalty can thrive as one of the safest states in the nation. Along these same lines of
reasoning, homicide rates in the states that do have the death penalty are still high, such as Texas and California. This
indicates that the death penalty doesn’t necessarily deter crime. To ground this in more specific data, the NY Times found
that during the last twenty years, the homicide rate in states with the death penalty has been 48% to 101% higher than
states without the death penalty!
Culture, religion, politics, and the overall ideologies that dominate a community influence whether the death
penalty will remain law. In more conservative states, the death penalty is more prevalent. Interestingly, at Michigan’s
constitutional convention in the 1960s, some argued that those who were executed were predominantly poor and of racial
minorities. If valid, this is concerning as it indicates corruption in the system (a system that can end life). If the death
penalty remains, more efforts must be taken to ensure the quality and fairness of the justice system through which they
will be punished.

EQ: What are people’s best options for dealing with stress to achieve physical and emotional health?

Three Points to Prove: #1: There are early signs of stress before it becomes more intense.
#2: People experience physical and emotional stress in different ways.
#3: There are effective resolutions to those that experience stress on a daily basis.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
Point that this Source/Information Proves: #2: People experience physical and emotional stress in different ways.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Jacob W. Glazier said, "The general population of interest for this study was adults who had reported experiencing MMI,
particularly around periods of emotional crisis or grief."

“P3 provides an excellent example of this when describing a sense of anger felt towards his/her nephew, ‘something in me
snapped. It was as if the contempt took me over. I seemed to lose any sense of self-identity and seemed to become hatred
itself’.” said by Jacob W. Glazier.

Constituents discussed and said, “Such overwhelming emotions, in fact, challenged any sense of self that the participant
might have had, often to the extent that prior boundaries constructed between self, other and world were severely
transversed.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This source helped me by understanding how people experience stress in different ways. The authors did a
science experiment and recorded their data onto an article. Based on the article, it shows that their participants have
experienced emotions that they could not handle. Meaning that they cannot control themselves while stressing. Their
stress levels seem to be above average because most people can handle the pain. The participants seem to be out of control
since some of them show anger or express their sadness.
Jacob W. Glazier, a person who recorded the data, found out that people tend to have grief and emotional crisis
like how P3 had snapped by letting out their anger towards their nephew. Participants show how they cannot keep
themselves from letting their anger out because of how stress has affected them. P5 showed how sad it was to lose a
person. P5 said that he/she felt the pain of losing a loved one and said that he/she feels as if their loved one is still there.
However, it was only a dream and that caused the participant to stress even more because of how he/she realized that their
loved one is gone.
The participants that were asked to be experimented on during this experiment showed how different their
reactions could be. Some showed how angry they can be and the others expressed how depressed they are. A lot of people
have been experiencing what these participants have shown, it is not only them. These participants are just examples who
show what stress can be like and it is tough to hear.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Julie Corliss said, “Although meditation still isn’t exactly mainstream, many people practice it, hoping to stave off stress
and stress-related health problems.”

The results of therapies were recorded and Julie said, “much of the evidence to support meditation’s effectiveness in
promoting mental or physical health isn’t quite up to snuff.”

Julie Corliss said, “meditation can help ease psychological stresses like anxiety, depression, and pain.”

Dr. Hoge said, “that a mindfulness-based stress reduction program helped quell anxiety symptoms in people with
generalized anxiety disorder, a condition marked by hard-to-control worries, poor sleep, and irritability.”

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore tested this method and they said, “Their findings, published in
JAMA Internal Medicine, suggest that mindful meditation can help ease psychological stresses like anxiety, depression,
and pain.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

Based off this article, I found out that Julie Corliss created a method to relieve stress. The way she found out that
it was effective was when she saw the results of her therapies. Most of the participants of the therapies said meditation
helped their anxiety, depression, and pain. Meditation is not really popular because a lot of people think that it won’t help
and it is time consuming. However according to this data, it shows that meditation could reduce stress-related health
problems.
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore heard about Julie’s results and decided to test it out.
They examined 19,000 medical studies and their findings showed that meditation helps relieve the symptoms of stress.
Later on the article, Dr. Hoge said that there were a lot of ways to reduce stress in her program. The program helps reduce
people with anxiety, worries, sleep issues, and irritability. This means that meditation is not the only way to relieve stress,
but it is still a good way.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Colleagues struggle daily lessons because of stress: “I often have trouble falling asleep, my mind racing with thoughts of
future lessons, past conversations and ideas for coaching” (Eliuk 1).

According to Bai, everyone encounters stress and “Not only does the ‘monkey-mind’ create unneeded stress and anxiety,
but it halts our connection to people and things around us, an idea that is very important to many curriculum theorists”
(Eliuk 1).

Barry says, “Her classes are focused on studying the movement of information between people through the use of images
rather than words and dialogue” (Eliuk 4).

In the article, the author says, “The practice of mindfulness will allow us to slow our minds and focus on enjoying the
present” (Eliuk 5).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

In this article, Eliuk and Chorney describes how classes should provide stress relievers. There should also be
classes that provide an understanding to how stress can be reduced substantially. Since students and teachers experience
the same type of stress, if classes are given time to meditate, it could help calm the mind. If there is no one that tries to
attempt on changing this, our minds could slowly be damaged. We need a way to find time or create a class that could
help give stress solutions, or give some breaks for teachers and students. Barry says her class is working well because she
knows how to deal with stress and gets to see different outcomes with her methods. She gives relaxation and
concentration a whole new meaning by combining those two into one in an effective way. Her method is to draw spirals
and by doing this, it helps calm the mind because of how similar it is to meditating.
The “monkey-mind” is a metaphor to how we keep putting constant thoughts in our brains. Since we keep doing
that, it creates stress and anxiety for no reason. It also affects our connections to other people. Throughout the article, it
says that we should respond to others through cooperation and courtesy. If we do this, we get to help others get a positive
attitude and it will help them work quickly. By giving others a compliment or doing something nice, our brains are calm
and can control stress. If we practice mindfulness, we could also enjoy the present by slowing our minds. By that, it means
to take things slow and not stress about the future as much as before.

Dr Vandenabeele says, “The research reveals that search numbers on the subject of stress and work-life balance slow
during the summer months and spike again from September onwards” (Vandenabeele 3).

Dr Vandenabeele’s research shows that stress related problems are within Google’s most searched “Meanwhile, ‘pressure
at work’ and ‘tips for a better work-life balance’ also fall within the top 10 Google searches in connection with stress and
work-life balance” (Vandenabeele 4).

Some of Vandenabeele’s top tips for employers to reduce employee stress are, “Communicate with your team - make you
employees feel valued and encourage a culture of openness. They should consult with employees on any changes that are
likely to affect them before they take place and encourage them to ask questions so that they feel involved. Get to know
more about stress and how to deal with it” (Vandenabeele 5).

Vandenabeele said, “Look for early signs of stress - some common early signs of stress are poor concentration, low mood,
feeling overwhelmed and irritability” (Vandenabeele 6).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

Based off Dr. Vandenabeele’s research, it seems as if adults experience stress a lot more than teenagers.
Apparently, adults experience stress a lot more during the months they have to work rather than summer months. I feel
like adults would lower their stress levels if they have breaks in between their shifts for work or they could go off
Vandenabeele’s tips. His tips show how to reduce stress and I agree with his strategy and methods on reducing stress.
Since ‘pressure at work’ and ‘tips for a better work-life balance’ was one of the most searched on Google, people
should find how to reduce stress before it worsens. Vandenabeele’s research showed how stress could affect the body by
lowering concentration, mood, and increases irritability. Some of the methods that Vandenabeele recommended for
reducing stress levels were meditating or giving more breaks similar to the employee's summer vacation. Although they
don’t make a lot of money because they get breaks, it does benefit their lives and they could live longer. It’s better to not
pay for health problems rather than facing them and losing more money.
To me, stress can be troublesome. However, there are solutions to fix this because this is mainly caused by an
overwhelming amount of work hours. From an adult’s point of view, they must have a hard time because they don’t have
breaks unlike how teenagers have some time off. So adults seem to be stressing a lot more because their work shifts are
interrupting their rest. If this is not changed, employees will have mental and health issues later on their lives.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Daniel Levitin is a neuroscientist and he says, “The brain releases cortisol that raises your heart rate, it modulates
adrenaline level, and it clouds your thinking” (Levitin).
As Daniel Levitin was under stress, he was struggling to think properly “With all the cortisol in my brain, my thinking
was cloudy. But I didn't know it was cloudy because my thinking was cloudy” (Levitin).

Danny Kahneman, a colleague of Daniel Levitin, found that, “Premortem is when you look ahead and figure out all the
things that could go wrong” (Levitin).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

Daniel Levitin was experiencing a lot of stress one night. He had forgotten his keys to his house, thus causing him
to either break into his house or call a locksmith. Therefore that night, he decided to break into his house making him
stress even more about the damages that he needs to pay to fix it. He said when you stress, you release cortisol from the
brain and it disrupts your thinking. Daniel Levitin explained how his thinking was getting cloudy because of how much
cortisol was being released into his brain all at once.
Danny Kahneman is a colleague of Daniel Levitin and a Nobel prize winner. He is a researcher that found out a
technique to prevent stress. He explains how people don’t use the Premortem technique to prevent their stress levels from
increasing. The Premortem technique is when you think ahead and try to think of all the problems that could happen..
Since people haven’t heard of or use this technique that frequently, their stress levels can increase. Thus making them
experience cortisol, similar to Daniel Levitin’s case. Those that have a lot of cortisol in their brain is unhealthy because
thinking about stress is one of the top twenty things that kill people. Although it’s just thinking about stress, it causes the
brain to malfunction, which causes people to die from it. It might sound absurd, but researchers found out that it’s true.
Daniel Levitin explained his incident in a very serious and concerning matter. He explains how his brain gets
cloudy as he continues to stress during the night before he had to leave to a meeting in the morning. This is similar to my
situations when I experience stress. When I stress, it’s mainly based on school work or tests. After I completed a test or a
task, I start to think about my work to see if I messed up on anything. As I continue to think about the errors that I’ve done
on my tests, my thinking continues to slow down or get disrupted later on the day. However, if I try to do Kahneman’s
Premortem technique, I feel like it would help reduce the levels of stress, since it captures the mistakes that I could make
or could have prevented from overthinking.

Point that this Source/Information Proves: #2: People experience physical and emotional stress in different ways.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

The author starts off the article saying, “Long work hours and high productivity demands are associated with poorer well-
being over time. Professionals such as physicians can average an 80-hour workweek, at times approaching 24 continuous
working hours, leaving significantly fewer hours available for leisure and sleep. These hours combined with
psychologically and physically demanding work conditions can put residents, and potentially their patients, at risk”
(Cranley).
The author relates the charts in the article about energy from activities, “The qualitative data summarized in Figures 1 and
2 are especially interesting, because certain work-related activities provided resource replenishment to participants during
work hours and within the work environment. For example, eating was more replenishing during work than during off-
work time” (Cranley).

The author states, “These professionals have very limited time outside of work to recover from the resource losses they
experience on a daily basis. The present results also raise the question of whether active recovery activities are necessarily
more valuable than passive recovery activities in terms of resource-replenishing effects” (Cranley).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

Cranley’s article tries to inform people that many are experiencing stress because of long work hours or high
productivity demands. This causes the worker to work overtime and have a small amount of time to sleep. Physicians are
experiencing stress the most because they work at an average of 80 hours. So, the physicians have less time to rest and
replenish their energy. If this continues, the workers and patients are going to be put at risk because the workers will have
no energy to help the patients that are in danger.
The author of the article showed charts of how people should control their stress. In the first chart, there were a lot
of work activities that would cause stress and resource draining. However, it was shown that eating replenishes the
person’s energy. On the second chart, there were many home activities that a person could do to replenish their health.
Based on the charts, the author is trying to say how workers need less work time because if they work overtime, their lives
are in danger. The less work time workers have, the more time they could replenish their energy.
Workers that are good at their jobs have less time outside than inside their workplaces. The worst part is that the
workers are doing this on a daily basis, which causes them to feel even more stressed out. The results show that active
activities are needed for them. They need more time to help replenish their energy and health.

Point that this Source/Information Proves: #1: There are early signs of stress before it becomes more intense.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

The author gives an example of how stress could be caused “If you’re super stressed over an argument with a friend, a
work deadline, or a mountain of bills, your body can react just as strongly as if you’re facing a true life-or-death situation.
And the more your emergency stress system is activated, the easier it becomes to trigger and the harder it becomes to shut
off” (Segal).

The author states, “If you tend to get stressed out frequently—as many of us do in today’s demanding world—your body
many be in a heightened state of stress most of the time. And that can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress
disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can suppress your immune system, upset your digestive and reproductive
systems, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and speed up the aging process. It can even rewire the brain, leaving
you more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems” (Segal).
The author explained how stress should be detected before it’s too late “Because of the widespread damage stress can
cause, it’s important to know your own limit” (Segal).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

Stress could be caused by silly things such as arguing with a friend or trying to get something done on time. It
could also be caused by a repetition of events that annoy a person. As stress continues to get into a person’s mind, the
person could experience health problems and could lead to death. Stress should be prevented before it’s too late because it
could be harder to avoid in the future. The article clearly states that stress might be hard to shut off, which would make it
harder for the person to live life normally.
The problems that stress could give is scary. If a person were to get stressed out many times, that person could
have health issues and might not be able to recover. The stress that builds up into a person’s mind causes them to have
health issues. If a person were to not try and recover from stress, there could be heart attacks, strokes, broken systems
within the body, and suicidal thoughts. The creator of the website created this article because a person that was close to
them had suicided from stress. Stress had been creating many mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
These were some of the effects that the person who had suicided felt.
There have been many incidents where stress had lead to suicide. This article is mainly used to show how stress
could be detected and prevented. The problems and challenges that people have to face when experiencing stress could be
tough. However, taking away the pain before it gets too serious makes lives protected.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

The author states how life is for young people “Youth of all ages, but especially younger children, may find it difficult to
recognize and verbalize when they are experiencing stress. For children, stress can manifest itself through changes in
behavior. Common changes can include acting irritable or moody, withdrawing from activities that used to give them
pleasure, routinely expressing worries, complaining more than usual about school, crying, displaying surprising fearful
reactions, clinging to a parent or teacher, sleeping too much or too little, or eating too much or too little” (Alvord).

The author said, “Stress can also appear in physical symptoms such as stomach aches and headaches. If a child makes
excessive trips to the school nurse or complains of frequent stomach aches or headaches (when they have been given a
clean bill of health by their physician), or if these complaints increase in certain situations (e.g., before a big test) that
child may be experiencing significant stress” (Alvord).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This article talks about how children have been struggling in life because of stress. Stress causes them to be unable
of behaving properly. Most of the time, stress could cause the child to be moody and have a tough time trying to focus on
something. When a person experiences stress at a young age, that child must have a solution to the problem because if
nothing is done, there could be consequences. The child might experience severe pain in the future and the situation might
be more intense.
The way a child acts when stressed is easy to detect because if the child acts moody, something must be going on
with their lives. It could be a test for school or bullying. Both are easily solvable, but parents may not be able to find out if
this is going on before the child is too late to be cured. Every child has to start off strong in order to have a good future. If
there is something wrong, the child might live with it for the rest of their lives. This will cause a problem for them since
stress is not easy to avoid.
The article says stress is recognizable when there are headaches, stomach aches, or other physical symptoms.
These are the times when a parent or guardian should help the child because this is the moment before stress will become
more intense. If nothing is done, the child could experience the pain for the rest of their life.
This article was created by an association that helps with people that experience stress. If any children are
experiencing stress, this association could help them out. There are many solutions and this association has been
researching plenty of reasons for stress.

Point that this Source/Information Proves: #3: There are effective resolutions to those that experience stress on a daily
basis.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

The author states the first step to relieving stress “Although there's no way to eliminate stress from our lives, we can
reduce it and manage it. The following tips will help. Each morning, soon after awakening, conduct deep breathing
exercises. Deep breathing can reduce stress and, when practiced regularly, may also help prevent it. Deep breathing for at
least 10 minutes a day, every day, can make a difference. Close your eyes and reflect on a time when you feel you were at
your best — physically and emotionally. Breathe in through your nose, hold your breath for two seconds, and release
through your mouth. This technique can be applied throughout the day for a calming effect” (Thompson).

Another useful tip that the author states was, “Yoga has been popular in Eastern cultures for centuries and recently burst
into the American culture. According to the science of yoga, our nerves are all in our spinal columns. When we feel stress
or tension, these nerves become blocked and create pain in our neck, back, shoulders and joints. Stretching not only
increases flexibility, but it can also reduce stress levels” (Thompson).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

The author states that there are ways to help relieve stress. Although it might be boring, it is a good way to help
soothe your brain and this might help cure the health problems that were caused by stress. The author said that each
morning, deep breathing could help reduce stress because this helps by giving a calm effect. Every morning, there should
be a time where you can breathe strongly with your eyes closed and simply feel as if your healing physically and
emotionally. By doing this every day, your brain will be in a calmer state and everything that seemed to be ruining your
life simply disappeared.
Another tip that the author wrote was to do yoga. Yoga has been around for years, but many people don’t think
that this could help relieve stress. Yoga is a calming exercise where every part of the body is moved into the right place. If
a person were to be stressed because of work, yoga could help the person because there might be some places where the
spine was misplaced. Like the author said, the spine is put back together after doing yoga. Other ways that the author said
to try is to relieve stress is to stretch because it doesn’t just help flexibility, but it could help by reducing your stress levels.
The author made other ways to help relieve stress, but yoga and breathing in deeply were the main points. These
help a lot because breathing in helps you feel relaxed in the morning and many things happen once you wake up. So, it is
good to feel relaxed and calm before an important matter. Yoga also helps by relieving any health issues such as any bone
misplacement. This will cause the person to feel good to move around with their body rather than staying stiff.
