TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION: PAINT FOR CASTING GATE GLOBE AND CHECK VALVES (GGC)
1.- OBJECT
The object of this procedure is to define the method used to the preparation and later coating of the internal
and external surfaces of the GGC casting valves, gear operators and handwheels.
When the valves do not need to be coated only the section 3.1 will be followed.
2.- SCOPE
This technical instruction will be applied as the standard for all carbon steel, alloys and cast iron valves
supplied by JC always insofar as the customer does not specify his own special quality standards, in which
case the corresponding instruction will be as indicated in the order.
Paint will be applied to body, adapters, levers, hand wheels and gear box not made from stainless steel or
non ferrous materials.
Manual forged valves up to 2" are not painted, just phosphatised . See Technical Instruction PS06/I4.
This kind of coating applies to cast carbon steel & cast alloy steel GGC valves, except when the customer
specifies another type of coating and/or procedure.
Once the hydrostatic and functional tests have been carried out, the valve with its gear operator (in case the
valve wears it) have to be prepared as follows and the handwheel must be kept for later:
a) Besides drying the water from the internal surfaces of the valve, the remaining of oil from the external
surface due to the mechanization processes must be removed by compressed air.
After cleaning, the valve is kept for drying up to one hour.
b) The surface of the side flanges must be protected with varnish and a wooden or plastic protector will be
fixed later over them.
NOTE: When a special paint system is required and the surface needs to be sand
blasted, it will be done before assembling the valve. After assembled any valve
can't be sand blasted.
The coating of the valve is carried out by spraying with a spray gun.
3.3.- Procedure
1st Layer:
DENOMINATION: Zinc rich epoxy primer.
COLOUR: Red.
REFERENCE : Intergard 251 or similar.
DRY FILM THICKNESS (DFT): 30 microns minimum.
DRYING TIME: 3 hours minimum.
SERVICE TEMPERATURE: 200 ºC.
2nd Layer:
DENOMINATION: Anticaloric purpurin. (Chlorinated Rubber)
COLOUR: Aluminium.
DFT: 20 microns minimum.
DRYING TIME: 3 hours minimum.
SERVICE TEMPERATURE: 400 ºC.
b) Internal surfaces:
Protect with rust preventive oil type E55 from Jaeken industrial Luboil or similar.
d) Handwheels:
DENOMINATION: Poliurethane
COLOUR: Red. RAL 3020
DFT 35 microns.
The inspection of the paint coating is carried out by random by visual control to check for the absence of drips
and lifting, peeling paint, scrapes or other defects that could affect the quality of the surface covering
and according to the thickness indicated in previous section.
The total thickness will be checked (once dry), as per the min thickness indicated before. The criteria of
acceptation consist in refusing those valves which have thickness of coating lower than indicated.
The adherence will be checked by random by the method B "Cross -cut tape test from ASTM D 3359-08
acceptance levels 5B and 4B.
