DELPHOS — Whether it’s
a Browns game on Sunday
or an after-game celebration
when a local high school
team wins on a Friday night,
the Rustic Cafe is often full
on such occasions. The bar
celebrates 70 years of own-
ership in the Lause Family
Saturday.
The establishment is
owned by Mike and Lorrie
(Lause) Metzger — the fifth
generation to own the bar
within the family. Lorrie said
the lineage began in 1941
when her aunt Lucille (Lause)
Crede bought the bar from
Albert Beckmann.
“My aunt Lucille, my
dad’s sister, brought it into
the family but the Rustic
has been here a lot longer. It
was a confectionary during
Prohibition and she turned
it back into a bar. Then she
sold it to her brother, my
dad’s brother also, and my
dad’s brother’s wife was my
mom’s sister. So, it’s been
close-knit. My dad owned
and/or operated several bars
in this town but he ran the
Rustic for the last 20 years of
his life. He died young and
that’s how my mom sold it
to my sister. She had it for 21
years and we were away for
20 years; Mike and I grew
up here but had moved away
and came back to buy the
family bar,” she said.
“I can remember coming
in here as a little girl when
my aunt Lucille ran it; I spent
a lot of my life up here as a
little kid. It has always been a
family bar. Even though it’s
a bar, we’ve always had good
food and we get all ages in
here and everyone gets along
okay.”
According to Lorrie,
Lucille (Lause) Crede owned
the bar from 1941-1944 and
again from 1951-1961; Norval
and Pauline Lause owned it
in the years between. Mary
and Ernie Lause owned it
from 1961-1981 and John and
Sandy (Lause) Schimmoeller
owned it from 1981 until they
sold it to Mike and Lorrie in
2002.
Lorrie is 55 years old and
her husband is two years her
senior. The couple have two
children who live in other
places; neither have inten-
tions of taking over the bar in
the future but Lorrie said there
was a time she didn’t think
she’d ever own it, either.
She said the bar looks
much as it has for many years,
though her father did make a
few changes at one time.
“It has pretty much stayed
the same as it was years ago
but dad did do some remod-
eling in the 60s when he got
caught selling whiskey on
Sunday. Instead of paying
the fine, he closed for 10
days for remodeling — some-
times they gave you a choice.
That’s when he dropped the
ceiling and put in new floor
tiling and walls but it’s basi-
cally the same,” she said.

DELPHOS — The
Jefferson volleyball team
played host to the Allen East
Mustangs Thursday night
in a Northwest Conference
showdown at Jefferson High
School.
The Lady Jeffcats got out
to an early lead and were
able to take the first set, the
Mustangs rallied and won set
2 but the home team took the
next two sets to win 25-16,
18-25, 25-16, 31-29.
The Wildcats came out in
set one ready to play and
really looked like they were
in sync and all on the same
page. The Wildcats showed
that by getting off to a 1-set
lead and holding all of the
momentum going into set 2.
However, the Lady
Mustangs were not giving up.
The away team came out in
set two a new team and was
able to tie things up at one set
apiece.
The Mustangs had ideas of
building on that new-found
momentum in the third set
but the home team managed
to get its problems worked
out and came out firing on all
cylinders. The Wildcats con-
trolled all of the momentum
in the third set of the night
and looked like they were
ready to finally take control
of the match and send the
Mustangs home in four sets.

been solid all year up at the

the guys to play the easy and
simple shot; save the miracle
shots for the summer. They
did that. I felt we handled
the course really well. We
started on the back nine and
I think those are the tougher
holes. It also tightened up as
the day wore on.”
“We needed to shoot this
well today. You know that
Kalida will always be pre-
pared for the tournament
under Coach Schnipke and
they were strong today. St.
John’s is also starting to put
it together right now.”

to. It’s not like coaching
basketball; there is no gym-
nasium where you can go
in and practice free throws.
You just have to play the
game and unfortunately,
for the most part, it has to
be good enough outside to
play.”
Still, the Wildcats’ prog-
ress over the season leaves
Brinkman very much
encouraged for next sum-
mer.
“I’m looking forward to
see how these young guys
develop in the future. This
was my first year, too, as
the coach, so I’m learning
along with them,” Brinkman
added. “I hope I can be bet-
ter next time at helping them
with their games, how to
approach it mentally as well

“This was the best we
shot all season as a group;
that gives us something to
build on in the off-season
and into next season,”
Hoehn added. “This was
Nate’s first 18-hole match,
so that’s always a learning
experience. We had some
injuries this year and we
never seemed to get the right
mix in our lineup.”

Pastor Terry Jones pushes a hot button

The deaths of the 10 International Assis-
tance Mission medical workers inspired head-
lines that were both shocking and numbingly
familiar, since these are dangerous times for
believers whose convictions steer them into
Afghanistan.
A Taliban leader blandly told the press:
“They were Christian missionaries and we
killed them all.”
If they had only waited a few weeks, the
gunmen could have claimed that their victims
were linked to a global conspiracy to burn
Qurans.
That’s the kind of statement that the head of
the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and
Religious Liberty Commission was worried
about when he -- with countless other evan-
gelicals -- urged the Rev. Terry Jones to cancel
his “International Burn a Koran Day” media
fest on Sept. 11. The leader of the tiny Dove
World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., did
precisely that, but not before forcing religious
and political leaders to wrestle with agonizing
First Amendment issues.
“The behavior of this church is not Chris-
tian. I cannot imagine Christ burning any re-
ligious texts,” argued the Rev. Richard Land,
in an online Washington Post forum. “This
behavior is unfortunately one of the prices we
pay for living in a free society with freedom of

speech and freedom of expression, even when
it is odious and reprehensible.”
A protest of this kind would “besmirch the
reputation of our Savior, and that makes it blas-
phemy,” he said. The whole idea was “appall-
ing, disgusting and brainless.”
The bonfire would have made life more
dangerous for missionaries, human-rights ac-
tivists, journalists, diplomats and American
soldiers.
Those flames also would have made life
much more dangerous for Christian converts
and members of other religious minorities in
predominantly Muslim lands.
Nevertheless, these clergy and politicos had
to wrestle with the fact that Jones had every
right to buy some copies of the Quran and, af-
ter planning a fire small enough to wink at local
laws, strike a match.After all, this would have
been another act of painful symbolic speech.
Did the American Nazis have a constitu-
tional right to march in Skokie, Ill., a Chicago
suburb that was home to numerous Holocaust
survivors? Yes, and demonstrators in the Rea-
gan White House era burned the American
flag. Muslims overseas have burned copies of
the novel, “The Satanic Verses,” by Salman
Rushdie, and Bibles, too.
How many times have followers of the Rev.
Fred Phelps of Topeka, Kan., waved their lu-
rid signs -- “God Hates the U.S.A.” is one of
the mildest -- at funerals for soldiers killed in
Iraq and Afghanistan? On Sept. 11, the West-
boro Baptist Church crew burned a Quran and
an American flag. For once, most mainstream
journalists elected to look the other way.
In the case of Jones, the leaders of the Coun-
cil on American-Islamic Relations decided that
the timing of his Quran travesty was simply too
hot to ignore. Even though the group regularly
ignores the videos that it receives of people
burning, shooting or ripping apart Islam’s holy
book, CAIR decided to issue a July 19 press
release announcing its own protest of “Interna-
tional Burn a Koran Day.” The group handed
out free copies of the Quran.
The word was officially out and the media
storm kept growing as angry reactions -- from
Arab streets to the White House -- rolled into
the world’s newsrooms.
Lost in the din were the quiet, measured
words of many religious leaders who tried to
walk a knife’s edge of logic in their public
statements.
For starters, they had to note the painful
fact that the Dove World Outreach Center was
a totally independent Pentecostal congregation
and its members were responsible to no higher
religious authority than their own pastor. Thus,
there was no one who could shut down this
event, other than police or government offi-
cials who, in order to do so, would have had to
trample the rights of Jones and his flock.
The bottom line: Blasphemy is not illegal in
the United States of America.
As the clock ticked down, Land stressed
that the “only thing more dangerous than what
this pastor is doing would be to allow the gov-
ernment to interfere. This would set a terrible
precedent and would diminish all our First
Amendment rights. The best way to combat
this is to exercise our free-speech right to con-
demn what he is doing in the simplest way and
most direct terms.”

Legislation to turn down the
volume on those loud TV
commercials that send couch
potatoes diving for their
remote controls looks like
it’ll soon become law.
The Senate unanimously
passed a bill late Wednesday
to require television stations
and cable companies to keep
commercials at the same vol-
ume as the programs they
interrupt.
The House has passed
similar legislation. Before
it can become law, minor
differences between the two
versions have to be worked
out when Congress returns to
Washington after the Nov. 2
election.
Ever since television caught

on in the 1950s, the Federal
Communication Commission
has been getting complaints
about blaring commercials.
But the FCC concluded in
1984 there was no fair way
to write regulations control-
ling the “apparent loudness”
of commercials. So it hasn’t
been regulating them.
Correcting sound levels is
more complicated than using
the remote control. The tele-
vision shows and ads come
from a variety of sources,
from local businesses to syn-
dicators.
Managing the transition
between programs and ads
without spoiling the artistic
intent of the producers poses
technical challenges and may
require TV broadcasters to
purchase new equipment. To
address the issue, an indus-
try organization recently pro-
duced guidelines on how to
process, measure and trans-
mit audio in a uniform way.
The legislation, sponsored
by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse,
D-R.I., requires the FCC to
adopt those recommendations
as regulations within a year
and begin enforcing them a
year later. Rep. Anna Eshoo,
D-Calif., is the driving force
behind the bill in the House.
Its title is the Commercial
Advertisement Loudness
Mitigation Act, or CALM.
Sen. Charles Schumer,
D-N.Y., a co-sponsor, said
it’s time to stop the use of
loud commercials to startle
viewers into paying attention.
“TV viewers should be able
to watch their favorite pro-
grams without fear of losing
their hearing when the show
goes to a commercial,” he
said.

ask to speak to your student. You say he/she is not home, but
what’s the problem?
“We can’t tell you, that would be an invasion of the student’s
privacy. But it’s important that the student call us right away.”
You are about to get in the car and drive across seven states when
your student calls. “Why is health services trying to get hold of

Q: All of my life, I have loved watching
Robin Hood movies and the TV show of the
same name. I’m still fascinated by him. Was
there really a place named Sherwood Forest
back in the day? -- H.L., Manchester, N.H.
A: There was, and there still is a Sherwood
Forest, although it’s not even close to the same
size as the days of Robin Hood in the 13th
century. At one time, the forest stretched 30
miles north and south and 10 miles east and
west. Today, the royal forest in Nottinghamshire
is a mere 1.25 square miles. The legendary home
of Robin Hood still attracts about half-a-million
visitors each year. Sherwood Forest is also home
to the famous Major Oak, an oak tree between
800 and 1,000 years old. According to legend,
the tree was Robin Hood’s main hideout.

Q: I was watching a rerun of the TV
series “Cold Case.” Joe Penny had a cameo
appearance. I enjoyed him in “Jake and the
Fat Man,” but since then he has only had small
roles. What can you tell me about him? What

A: Born in London, England, on June
24, 1956, Joe Penny grew up in the U.S.
state of Georgia and attended high school in
Huntington Beach, Calif.
He is well-known for his
role as Nick Ryder on the
detective series “Riptide”
(1984 to 1986). From 1987
to 1992, he played Jake
Styles on “Jake and the Fat
Man,” with William Conrad.
More recently, he co-starred
with Lea Thompson in the
rap,” said Fallon, who also
performed songs by Missy
Elliott, Tupac, Kanye West
and Snoop Dogg. “I was in my

is what we grew on,” Fallon

Charges weighed after sex video, suicide

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — As prosecutors
consider filing bias-crime charges against
two college freshmen accused of streaming
online video of a classmate’s sexual encounter
with another man, a huge divide has emerged
between those who support the suspects and
those who want to see them punished.
The saga that unfolded this week at Rutgers
University has become a flashpoint for debate
after the revelation that 18-year-old Tyler
Clementi had jumped to his death from the
George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22.
Leading up to the suicide, a post appeared on
a website catering to gay men seeking advice
on what to do after learning that a roommate
secretly filmed a liaison. While it’s impossible
to be certain that that post and subsequent ones
were made by Clementi, they mirror the same
timeline as the alleged filming and reflect the
anguish someone in that situation might have
felt.
Clementi’s roommate, Dharun Ravi, of
Plainsboro, N.J., and another student, and Molly
Wei, of Princeton, N.J., both 18, are charged
with invasion of privacy, with the most serious
charges carrying a penalty of up to five years
in prison.
But Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J.
Kaplan said Thursday that more charges were
possible under New Jersey’s hate-crimes law.
“We will be making every effort to assess
whether bias played a role in the incident, and,
if so, we will bring appropriate charges,” he said
in a statement.
The legal question has to do with the
motive.
A person can be found guilty of a bias crime
in New Jersey if the jury agrees that he or she
committed a crime because of a belief that the
victim is a member of a protected group, such as
a racial minority or gay.
Ravi’s lawyer has not responded to requests
for comment. Messages left with an attor-
ney believed to be representing Wei were not
returned.
High school friends of the suspects, both
2010 graduates of West Windsor-Plainsboro
High, say the suspects have no problem with
gay people.
“He had gay friends,” Derek Yan, 16, told
The Associated Press. Yan said that he chatted
online with Ravi, an Ultimate Frisbee player,
about college life in recent weeks. “He said he
was lucky to have a good roommate,” Yan said.
“He said his roommate was cool.”
Numerous websites popped up in defense of
the suspects, with some proclaiming their inno-
cence or calling their alleged actions a prank.
Countless other sites, however, were dedicated
to bashing the suspects or calling for stiffer
charges, including manslaughter.
The comments on the pages are emotional
and sometimes vitriolic. Some postings call the
suspects “sickos” and “cold-blooded killers”
while others display homophobia and racism
(both suspects are minorities), even thanking the
suspects for their possible role in a gay man’s
death.
Luanne Peterpaul, who has worked as a pros-
ecutor and criminal defense lawyer and serves
as the vice chairwoman of the gay rights group
Garden State Equality, said bias crimes can be
hard to prove.
She said prosecutors should look at evidence
including the Twitter messages Ravi may have
used to alert friends to the alleged video. She
said that there might be clues as to his intent.
Peterpaul said she believes that filming a
man and a woman engaged in sex in a dorm
room would not have had the same results.
“It’s quite possible that maybe they would
have videotaped an opposite-sex couple,” she
said. “But would there have been such a fol-
lowing?”
The saga took another twist when the web-
site Gawker reported that someone started a
discussion on a graphic gay-oriented website
after realizing his roommate was “spying” on
him with a webcam.
The author described his conflicted feelings
after reading his roommate’s tweets about the
author kissing a guy in their room while he
watched from afar. Should he report his room-
mate or request a room change? Would either
help or just make things worse? The author
later wrote that he told a resident assistant about
the filming — and that he unplugged his room-
mate’s computer and searched the room for hid-
den cameras before another liaison.
The last known communication from
Clementi was on his Facebook page. It said,
“Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.”
Friends were shocked that Clementi, a talent-
ed violinist who was known as quiet but happy,
would have been embroiled in scandal — or
would have killed himself.
“I would never expect this to happen to
him,” said John Shen, a student at the New York
Institute of Technology and a high school friend
of Clementi’s who last saw him about a month
ago. “He’s such a good kid. I’ve never seen him
angry.”

many investors when it forced out Mark Hurd as CEO nearly
two months ago. Now, those directors appear to have baffled
Wall Street with its selection of HP’s new leader — Leo
Apotheker, who lost his job running German business software
maker SAP earlier this year after he didn’t live up to expecta-
tions.
Thursday’s announcement caught almost everyone off
guard, causing HP’s shares to slip back into a funk that began
in early August after the board ousted the well-regarded Hurd
amid allegations of sexual harassment and deceptive expense
reports.
Most analysts had expected HP to hire from within, or tap
an outsider with a more impressive resume than Apotheker’s.
“I thought it would be difficult for HP to hire an outsider
and have its stock to go down, but this board seems to have
found a way,” Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall said.
HP shares fell $1.21, or 2.9 percent, in Thursday’s extended
trading. Before Apotheker’s hiring was announced, the stock
closed the regular session at $42.07, down 46 cents.
The market value of the world’s largest technology com-
pany has been sagging since Hurd was shown the door, inten-
sifying the pressure on HP’s board to find a CEO who would
restore investor confidence.

lasted less than two years in the position. SAP decided not to
renew his contract when it expired nearly eight months ago,
largely because SAP’s financial performance faltered after
Apotheker raised the fees that the company’s customers paid
to maintain and upgrade software.
“SAP’s customer relationships suffered badly and so did
employee morale while (Apotheker) was there, so this is a bit
of an odd choice by HP,” said software analyst Paul Hamerman
of Forrester Research.
But HP’s board is confident it found the right man for the
job.
“Leo is a strategic thinker with a passion for technology,
wide-reaching global experience and proven operational dis-
cipline — exactly what we were looking for in a CEO,” said
Robert Ryan, the lead independent director on HP’s board.
HP also named Ray Lane, another candidate for the CEO
position, as its non-executive chairman.
Lane, 63, is currently a partner at renowned venture capital
firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, but he is best known
in Silicon Valley as the former chief operating officer at SAP
rival Oracle Corp.
Although he was hailed for helping Oracle recover from
an accounting scandal, Lane was dumped by the company’s
mercurial CEO, Larry Ellison, a decade ago.

MIAMI — For the first time in more than a decade, the federal
government is funding sex education programs that aren’t based
solely on abstinence. But they’re not just about handing out con-
doms, either.
Beginning this school year, a five-year, $375 million grant is
being divided among 28 programs that have been proven to lower
the pregnancy rate among participants, no matter their focus. Many
programs distribute condoms, but about half also aim to boost
teens’ academics, get them involved in extracurricular activities and
even improve their parents’ job status.
Advocates believe this “above the waist” approach gives kids
the tools to help them succeed in school and make better life deci-
sions, especially about sex.
“There’s a growing realization that we have to talk to young
people about relationships. It’s not just body parts,” said Bill Albert,
the chief program officer for The National Campaign to Prevent
Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. “It’s saying, ’What are your
goals?’ and helping young people understand what they need to do
to get there.”
That theory, which has become popular in the safe-sex com-
munity in the past decade, will replace the abstinence-centered talks
funded by a Republican Congress in the late 1990s and later under
President George W. Bush to the tune of $1.5 billion.
Critics contend there is little proof those programs lowered the teen
pregnancy rate or that participants were less likely to have sex. In 2007,
Mathematica Policy Research, an independent government contractor,
released a study showing students in abstinence-only programs are no
more likely to abstain from sex, delay having sex or have fewer partners
than students who received no sex education at all.
The teen birth rate rose from 2005 to 2007 after years of a steady
decline, then dipped again in 2008, according to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence
Education Association, worries the new sex education message
focuses on reducing teen pregnancy, not avoiding the risks of
unprotected sex altogether. Huber considers only one of the 28
approved Department of Health and Human Services programs to
be abstinence-centered.
Her agency estimates 169 abstinence programs serving 1 million
teens nationwide will lose millions in funding. Those programs have
received about $100 million a year in direct funds since 2005.
LANSING, Mich. — An assistant attorney general is using his
personal blog to target the openly gay leader of the University of
Michigan’s student assembly, calling him a racist with a “radical
homosexual agenda.” The lawyer claims that when he’s not at
work, he has the right to say whatever he wants.
But the vociferous criticism has raised questions of just how
far a civil servant can go, and whether Andrew Shirvell’s online
attacks — which include putting a swastika over a gay pride flag
in a photo of 21-year-old Chris Armstrong — should affect his
job.
So far, Attorney General Mike Cox says no. Cox called Shirvell
immature and his blog posts “distasteful,” but said he has the right
to free speech. But Cox said he was troubled that the 30-year-old
lawyer videotaped police breaking up a party at Armstrong’s off-
campus home in Ann Arbor over Labor Day weekend.
Cox said he plans to investigate. Shirvell is on leave from
the civil service, and “is subject to a disciplinary hearing” when
he returns, Cox told Detroit radio station WJR’s Paul W. Smith
Friday morning. He didn’t elaborate.
“Part of the video is being outside this young man’s house at
1:30 on a Sunday morning. Clearly, I wouldn’t recommend that to
any state employee to be doing,” Cox told The Associated Press
on Thursday. “That being said ... it’s not something where I can
walk in one day and say, ’I don’t like what he has on there, let’s
broom him.’ He has First Amendment protections.”
Shirvell posted the video on his blog, called Chris Armstrong
Watch, which he began in April. In the Sept. 5 posting, he accused
Armstrong of hosting the party with the intent to “liquor-up
underage freshmen and promote homosexual activity in an effort
to recruit them to the homosexual lifestyle.”
Shirvell has repeatedly called on Armstrong to resign. He has
criticized Armstrong’s friends and put their Facebook postings on
his blog.
The university on Thursday banned Shirvell from campus,
where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2002, saying he was
targeting the elected student body president “in a reprehensible
manner.”
“This is just another tactic bringing awareness to what Chris
really stands for,” Shirvell said. “The substance of the matter is,
Chris Armstrong is a radical homosexual activist who got elected
partly funded by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund to promote a
very deeply radical agenda at the University of Michigan. ... I’m a
Christian citizen exercising my First Amendment rights.”
“This looks like a mixed bag,” Marshall said. “On one hand,
Ray Lane is the real deal and should do wonders for that board.
But on the other end, there is no getting around the fact that
SAP pretty much fired (Apotheker).”
The decision to give Apotheker another shot at being a CEO
may renew questions about the competency of HP’s board,
predicted Stephen Diamond, a Santa Clara University associate
professor of law specializing in corporate governance. Besides
its decision to jettison Hurd, HP’s board had previously come
under fire for spying on the phone records of journalists and
other directors.
“It looks like the board almost punted this decision,”
Diamond said. “This doesn’t look like a very stable, long-term
solution for the company.”
Since leaving SAP, Apotheker said he has been enjoying
some time off and consulting with companies. He is scheduled
to take over HP’s helm Nov. 1.
