RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SMOKING HABITS WITH COGNITIVE

FUNCTION IMPAIRMENT ASSESSED BY MoCA-Ina


AND THE REVIEW OF ISLAM SIDE

ABSTRACT

Background: Smoking can cause impaired cognitive function. Impaired cognitive function due to
smoking can be detected by using neurocognitive examination one of which is MoCA-Ina. This
study aims to determine the relationship between smoking habits with impaired cognitive function
assessed with MoCA-Ina and its review from the side of Islam.
Methods: This research was conducted by analytical survey approach by cross sectional. Population
in this research is civitas YARSI University. Sample selection using consecutive sampling technique
with condition to fulfill inclusion criteria. Primary data collection (questionnaire sheet and MoCA-

Results: Of the 60 respondents smokers assessed with MoCA-Ina obtained 34 respondents with
abnormal cognitive function and 26 respondents with normal cognitive function.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between smoking habit and cognitive function
impairment assessed using MoCA-Ina. Smoking can harm the health of smokers and people around
him. This is the basis for Ulama to forbid smoking because Allah has forbidden acts that can harm
themselves and others.
