5 RULES OF ATTACK CONSTRUCTION

1. SECURITY: always one player behind the ball line

2. RHYTHM: two touches play

3. CHANGE SIDE OF ATTACK: Change side of attack (switching


the play) looking for more space and time to play

4. MOVEMENT WITHOUT BALL (attack direct opponent’s back)


to move closer and threaten opponent’s goal

5. MOVEMENT OF THE FARTHEST PLAYER FROM THE BALL

ATTACK OBJECTIVES

General attack objectives:


- to maintain ball possession
- to advance toward opponent’s goal

Both objectives have as their most important target:


to score a goal

4-0, DEFINITION
- Attacking system where 4 players are positioned in a small arch at court width
to prepare the attack ...

4-0, CHARACTERISTICS
- we are talking about a complex attacking system, because for its correct application
we need good coordination between 4 players on the field.
- it requires specific technique and excellent physical preparation
- is suitable for high level teams because requires intensive and numerous
training sessions

4-0, OBJECTIVES
- Create free space behind the defense
- Entice defenders to stay in the same defensive line with no DEFENSIVE HELP and
COVERING

4-0, WHAT IT MEANS ?


-Constant movement with the ball and without ball =
good physical condition
- Perfect synchronisation and automatisation between players
- It needs players to be able to play the ball under pressure, with no fear and with
security. Players able to take own risk.

4-0, PROBLEMS
- Not usable against teams that are defending at 10m
- If we lose the ball during the attack elaboration we’ll have dangerous situations
because all players are in the same line. We don’t have defensive balance.
- to be funcional and well applied system we need days and days of practice. Do we
have them?
- 4-0 requires high concentration, if one player makes a mistake, team loses balance.
- If the rotations are lazy and with no depth we are not creating problems for the
opponent’s defense.

4-0, WHEN?
- against teams that are pressing (with fast movements with and withouth ball we are
easilly earning the opponent’s back)

- against teams that are playing individual (man to man) defense with no coverings.

- when we want to move the ultimate opponent’s defender from his area.

- if the opponents are playing defense with exchanges (zone defense), will be very
useful to play between lines to attack opposite side.

- if applied correctly it helps long ball possession and in this way we control rhythm of
the game.

- 4-0 offers many possibilities of movements, it gives us attacking richness that any
of attacking systems could offer us.

- 1 to 2, crossing (parallel + diagonal), running with the ball toward center
- leave the ball for 5 or pass it to 3
- pass for 4 + overlapping, if not, running with the ball toward center …

- 4 full running goes diagonally, 3 pass to 5, 5 running with the ball toward center
- 3 full running with no ball asking for parallel, 5 running with the ball toward center, 2
overlaping
- 5 could leave ball for 2
- 5 pass the ball to the 4 and ask for parallel

- 2 running with the ball and takes central part of the pitch,
5 overlaping and shooting if possible
- 2 pass to the 4 and asks for parallel while 5 is asking for diagonal

- 3 pass to the 2 and asks for parallel, in the meantime 4 is asking for diagonal,
if there is a pass 2 will execute it, if not we’ll have two options
- FIRST: 2 pass to the 5 and asks for simple long diagonal
- SECOND: crossing between players 3 and 5

- 5 pass the ball to the 2 and ask for a large diagonal

- 2 pass the ball to the 3 in front of 1 who is cutting toward second post, 2 overlaping

- we have two possibilities:
FIRST:
- 3 pass to the 2 and is running diagonally toward second post, 4 is taking position to
shoot on goal
- 4 is passing or is shooting toward second post
SECOND:
- 3 is not passing the ball to the 2, he is running with the ball and cross with the 4
toward center

4-0, HOW TO TRAIN IT?


- to execute this attacking system well we have to develop the movements and be
able to control them.
This means that the training has the objective to improve the control of movements

- ATTENTION: however we have big number of attacking combinations that are


possible from 4-0 and it is not possible to train them all.
It is much more important that the player is able to choose movements depending on
the real situation that occurs during the game

4-0, EXERCISE

Exercise 1: (warm-up)
12’, 40x20, we are working to improve specific technique (passing the ball with
outside of the foot, change play) and movements.
Three players with one ball are moving around the whole pitch, passing ball
between them with a maximum two touches and are always varying where to pass
the ball.

Exercise 2: (central part of the training session)


We are improving basic (initial) 4-0 movements.
15’, 25x20, 4 vs 4, 5 consecutive attacks (after any goal 5 more attacks), goalkeepers
can’t leave 6m area, defenders and attackers can’t move to the other side of the
pitch (vertical line). Individual (man to man) defense.
Free attack from 10m. Work on parallels and opening passing lines.

Exercise 3: (central part of the training session)


We are improving coordination of 4-0 system.
15’, 25x20. 4 vs 4, 5 consecutive attacks (after any goal 5 more attacks), goalkeepers
can’t leave 6m area, free movements around the pitch with compulsory change
to other side of the pitch after second pass.
Free attack after 10m.

Exercise 4: (central part of the training session)


We are working on perfecting the 4-0 system.
15’, 25x20, 4 vs 4, 5 consecuttive attacks (after any goal 5 more attacks), goalkeepers
can’t leave 6m area.
Two central attackers are crossing (parallel or diagonal), maintaining balance by
exchanging 2 passes.
Free attack from 10m. Work on crossing + opening the passing lines.

4-0, IMPORTANT POINTS TO FOCUS ON DURING THE TRAINING SESSION?

- Always, at least, have one simple solution

- first movements are short, because player with the ball has to have one simple
solution in a short time and to see how opponent’s defense is acting.

- Step by step, movements are deeper and faster
