HOMEWORK 1

Problem 1: This problem is composed of two independent parts.

a) Suppose the input signal x(t) = 2sinc 2t is passed through a linear time invariant

system with impulse response h(t) = sinc(t). Determine the output of the system y(t)
and compute its energy and power.

b) Suppose that the signal x(t) = 4 cos(πt)+sin(4πt) is an input to a system with impulse
response h(t) = sinc(2t). Determine the power spectral density and the power of the
output signal.

Problem 2: This problem is composed of three independent parts.

a) Use convolution theorem to show that

sinc(t) ∗ sinc(t) = sinc(t).

b) Use Parseval’s theorem to compute the following.

Z ∞
ma = sinc(t)sinc(at) dt,
−∞

where a is a real valued constant. Sketch ma as a function of a.

c) Can the response of an LTI system to x(t) = sinc(t) be y(t) = sinc2 (t)? Justify your
answer.

Problem 3: Suppose the response of an LTI system to rect(t) be Λ(t) = (1 − |t|)rect(t/2).

a) Can you find the response of this system to x(t) = cos(2πt) from the information
provided? Justify your answer.

b) Show that h1 (t) = rect(t) and h2 (t) = rect(t) + cos(2πt) can both be the impulse
response of this system.

c) Based on your answers above, what conditions must the input x(t) satisfy in general
so that the system can be uniquely determined by knowing its corresponding output?

Problem 4: Consider the periodic signal with period T depicted in the figure below.

a) Determine analytically the Fourier series coefficients (xn ) of the signal.

1
x(t)

… 1 …
t
-T/2 -T/4 T/4 T/2

b) Compute analytically the power of x(t).

c) Define the approximate signal

N
n
X
x̃N (t) = xn ej2π T t
n=−N

where T is the period of the signal. Using Matlab and result of part a), plot four
periods of x̃N (t) for N = 5, 10, 25, 50. Comment on what you observe as N (number of
harmonics) increases. Submit a printout of the Matlab code you have written in the
appendix of your submission.

d) Using Matlab compute the percentage of power of x(t) contained in the approximate
signal you obtained in part c), x̃N (t) for N = 5, 10, 25, 50. Comment on what you
observe as the number of harmonics increases. Submit a printout of the Matlab code
you have written in the appendix.
